How has employment changed from how it was 10, 20, 50 years ago?

Where do you see it going?

What should we do, if anything, to change that?

Employers have changed. In my father's day, if you got a job, it was expected that you would have that job for years and years. People did not change work. Employers paid people honest wages for honest work. People were happy.

Now days, jobs are more transcient. You get a job you never know if you will have the same job tomorrow. Companies are gobbled up by huge corporations. Companies downsize. Jobs are reengineered. Companies do not "owe" their employees. You can get your pink slip at any time.

Employees today need to keep abreat of trends. They must retool themselves to changing technologies.

The old style blue collar jobs are being phased out. Factories close, mines close. Today there are growing jobs in Technology, but that is down today and medical profession is the place to be. Next, it is expected that with the growing terror alerts, that security will be big.

Some things never change, there will always be a need for mail carriers, police officers, firemen, doctors and so on, but these jobs are few and far between.

Public sector jobs are always changing.

The temporary labor markett is big today. This is because employers do not want to pay workers benifits or do not want to pay severence pay. A temp can be hired and fired at will. No reason may be given.

Today's worker may have several employers in one year. He or she may be forced to pay their own insurance.

In other words it sucks to be a worker in today's society.

I miss pensions. My grandfather's and father's generation had/have them to rely on when they retire. I have a woohoo! 401.k. Oh yeah, that's my own money anyway.
