View Full Version : PDAs ... I don't get the hype. buggy 02-06-2002, 11:53 PM I spent a record amount of time testing this IPAQ on DA. u8nxprt 02-07-2002, 12:01 AM PDA's are executive toys. Most people don't need them and fiddle with them in meetings. The only reason I might need one is if I had three meetings a day and needed multiple alarms to summon me from a computer or hallway meeting and into the conference room. Fortunately I don't have three meetings a day. It has happened... but not lately. Kraw 02-07-2002, 12:36 AM I have had 3 palm pilots.. found very little use for any of them. Sold one on Ebay and gave 2 away. Manu 02-07-2002, 01:11 AM I find my palm invaluable... I know people like my dad carry around a 6x8 'dayrunner' type book. he has SOME contacts in here, to dos, and calendars... On his computer he has his act database with ALL of his contacts and his calendar and his to dos... To me it just makes sense having a PDA. You can sync it right to it, and have something that does everything a 'dayrunner' does, but more. The ipaq are rad for their voice message stoarage! buggy 02-07-2002, 03:07 AM The little keypad is frustrating, I'd rather just write stuff down. If you're organized, it'll be just as easy to keep. As far as the OmniSky type services go ... I don't understand why, unless you're a fancy stock broker that needs to check email and things of that nature 24/7. I am on a project dealing with PDAs, and they're just a PITA :) ChaoticThoughts 02-08-2002, 12:31 AM If the workplace was going to pay for one, I would take it. Or if they became real cheap, I might get one. Manu 02-08-2002, 11:24 AM Buggy- Thats why ya learn the PDas grafiti language ;-) I can write on my palm at prolly about 1/2 the speed I normally write, but it comes out clear and legible for all, heh. The last one I had was in Spanish, so it was of little use to me :) I think we are getting the HP versions at work soon, the wireless kind. Supposed to use them for background checks etc (bet ATL don't have those yet! ;)) Manu 02-08-2002, 02:06 PM lol. Yeah, the wireless stuff has some good actions. We're currently switching a form in the medcenter on a case study. The form right now is scantron. What sucks is that the machine is highly inaccurate and when it breaks or we need a data analysis, we gotta call the guy in NY, he comes out, it takes about 2-3 grand a year in just maint/fixes and about 10 grand in forms. (they are lik 20 cents each) So...what we're doing it switching to a web base ASP page that feeds an access database...This way we can do all the backup/data collection we want, on our time and on our dime. There is no overhead other than a lisence for avantgo... So once we go live, we're going to have 10 'staff' wireless pdas, so they can fill out the form, submit, and be done. Pretty nifty actually. Costs will go down form about 12-20K a year to about 5K a year. I hope they give me the savings :) |
