View Full Version : SUV Commandos

There's nothing more ridiculous than the "SUV Commando" sorts who have never driven their SUV's off a paved road, or through snow. In Lost Angeles I'd wager that 49 out of 50 SUV owners are of this type. So, in short, we're throwing away our finite supply of petrol so some SUV owners can be faux "Walter Mitty" commandos, barreling down the roads in their massive behemoths, rather than drive a vehicle that consumes a reasonable amount of fuel.

EDIT: Though, on the upside, SUV's make great targets for panzerfausts... :D

Hybrid SUVs are scheduled to hit the market sometime in '04.

What about those of us in Pennsylvania who have driven off the paved road, towed broken down vehicles, driven in snow, hauled anything and everything in them, and put dead animals in them? Can we drive them?

No. The only legal use foer an SUV is shopping and taking your kids to soccer games.

Does anyone else want to declare yuppie hunting seasson to be open again?

My kids don't play soccer, and I'm all for human hunting of any sort. :D

Despite being somewhat protected within the confines of an Autopower 6 point rollcage and welded on subframe connectors, I am a defensive driver and always on the lookout for a rogue landscaping trucks full of illegal aliens, alcoholic electricians and plumbers in vans, and the most dangerous of all, soccer moms talking on the cell phone while barreling down the road in a Chevy Tahoe or similar vehicle.

Today when one tried to intimidate me by tailgating, I simply slowed down. As I approached my street, I did not put on my blinker, but as traffic law dictates, as I came to a stop, I extented my arm (with middle finger extended).

The funny thing is a lot of people buy or lease the gas guzzling SUV's simply to protect themselves from other SUV's.

SUVs are necessary in Colorado. Half the year can be cold and snowy. The problem I see is that folks are overly confident with four wheel drive. Large heavy vehicles don't stop on a dime. especially on ice.

I oppose legislation that reduces the number of optional vehicles that people have to drive or restricts the number of gallons of gasoline they can burn per year.

I reckon that I don't NEED my Mach 1, but I sure as hell enjoy driving it. The way I drive it, I'm sure that it easily eclipses the fuel consumption of an SUV driven by the typical "soccer mom".

I'm glad there's not (to my knowledge) anybody out there who would enjoy blasting me with a WWII era German anti-tank weapon just because I've got the opportunity to choose what kind of automobile I'd like to own.

Perhaps under other ideal governments, we could establish a "Department of Auto Necessity" - wherein each citizen would have to apply for a necessity permit while seeking financing or title on their automobiles. If they don't make their case well enough, they are issued the priviledge of buying the type of automobile approved by those who know better what's best for the "sheep" in the general population.

Or maybe we should just let people drive what they want to drive.

Yes you may; I wasn't targeting people who put them to uses unsuitable for automobiles.

This is typical. Whenever I point out the inanity in choosing to drive an SUV simply because it's the current trend de jour, I'm accused of being "Un-American" in so many words.

Nowhere did I say I want legislation that prohibits people from driving SUV's. I'm merely exercising my Constitutional right to express my opinion in regards to the foolish and pompous character most SUV drivers possess. I mean, honestly, why not drive a friggin' Sherman Firefly?

Point taken. I disagree with your assertion in the original post that SUV owners must earn it by traveling off road or having to bust through snow.

They own SUV's - good for them. They've exercised choice.

Environmental taxes on SUV's? I do believe we have that over here.

Who cares what taxes you have over there? So, Norway's taxes and America's taxes should all be structured the same?

We pay enough taxes. What we need is a reduction in taxes.
