No, but you don't have to buy the most extravagant ring out there. You can buy a cheap ring and have it still look good.

This was actually a pretty big fight between my husband and I. He wanted to get this huge, fancy ring - I wanted to buy a house. I'm so glad he asked me to go with him to look at rings - if he had gone on his own - he would've went way overboard. We had an argument over it right there in the jewelry store, I was looking at this $500 heart shaped diamond and he had a fit. The salesman actually had the nerve to stick his nose in it on the side of the $5000 rings of course - had to tell him about himself too.

Heh - you know what I told him when we first started talking about finally getting married - we should just use the engagement ring from my first marriage! He didn't go for that one at all - but we did hock it and use the cash for the ring and wedding!

a few hundred should be fine, even less if it's actually durable and it will last (i'm seriously brutal to jewelry). anything more and i'd have to say no and kick him in the balls just for being wasteful.

the diamond and jewelry industry are giving women bad names by convincing men that the only way a women will marry them is if they buy a very expensive shiny rock that looks exactly like a much more reasonably priced shiny rock. ignore them and buy a decent, nice ring that's purdy. if she really cares that it's not a diamond, then she's not worth marrying

I have never, ever heard 6 month's salary - holy crap! That would be more then a new car costs! That's nuts! I have heard on the diamond ads that 2 month's pay is a good guideline - but I think even that is too much - way too much. If she wants something big and showy - get a fake, no one will know but you and her and she can brag to all her friends that it's real if she wants.

Harry & I have a friend who had a pretty nicely put together Mustang, (I must say - beautiful, custom paint job on the car) well he met a girl and she LOVED jewelry - she'd buy herself something all the time, so he thought (he NEVER asked her about it) she would want a huge, showy ring - so he SOLD HIS CAR to buy her this $15,000 ring and you know what - when she first saw it - she thought it was fake and loved it, when she found out what he did, she wanted to kill him - she said - he could have paid $200 for a cz ring that would have been just as beautiful. It was very sad. And we all missed going to the track with the car. :(

PS - AND - the goober who did buy the car - wrecked it street racing a few months later.

I spent 1200 on the diamond and 2 or 300 on the setting. That was alot of money for me. I wouldn't spend alot unless you are loaded. That money can be put towards more important things, like a house.

One of my bud's just got engaged and I think he spent over 8k on a ring. That's (IMHO) rediculous

see, that's the kind of ring that would get a ball kicking from me. or i might take the ring, sell it, get a cheaper one that looks exactly alike, and use the money to pay for the wedding

I eloped- was married 25 years before he died- never had a ring. He said he would not wear one- Cocky witch that I am said then I would not either.

I would look for something that does not cost a lot but looks expensive. I think diamonds are a rip off anyway.
