Volunteering Step by Step
Mahal2000 volunteers may start their service in the IDF at the beginning of March, the beginning of July or the middle of October, and must arrive in Israel at least 6 weeks earlier. (What should I do and where shall I stay during this time?)
Before Arriving in Israel
Sign up online
Call Mahal2000 after receiving confirmation for your participation in the program.
Arrive in Israel (as a tourist) at least six weeks before you join the IDF. We highly recommend you schedule an appointment before arriving in Israel, with the director of Mahal2000, Avi Naor.
Arrival in Israel (6 weeks before service)
Sign up with Mahal2000 - in person in Israel. You will need five recent passport photos.
Obtain an Israeli visa type A1 or A2:
Application for visa type A1 or A2 - filled out and signed in person at the Ministry of Interior in Israel with the following attachments:
Valid passport
Birth certificate
Documentation of being Jewish (i.e. ketuba (marriage certificate) of parents or grandparents and confirmation from your Jewish community). In unusual cases, we recommend prior consultation with an Aliya Representative in your country of origin regarding documentation for purposes of the Law of Return.
Confirmation supplied by Mahal2000 explaining the reason for requesting visa A1 or A2
All above documents in original or authenticated photocopy by an Israeli Diplomatic Mission or Aliya Representative for your country. If a document is not in Hebrew or English, please attach translation certified by an Israeli notary (which may take time to obtain) or Aliya Representative for your country.
Enlisting in the IDF
Go to induction center to take IDF medical tests (after coordination with Mahal2000)
Request at induction center to be enlisted in the IDF Mahal2000 program for 14 1/2 months (NB It can take up to one month before you actually start your service):
Military Service (14 1/2 months)
1 month IDF pre-basic training
4 1/2 months IDF basic training (or 1 month, if non-combat profile)
Active IDF service
At the end of the 14 1/2 months, discharge from the IDF (unless you sign up for longer)
After Completing Your Service
One year part time work in a Jewish community is anticipated, after leaving Israel
Return to Israel (optional)
Please note:
Volunteers with no immediate family in Israel are entitled to privileges and support granted by the IDF, Friends of the IDF and other organizations.
If you choose to become an Israeli citizen after discharge from the Mahal2000 program, no obligatory additional compulsory IDF service is required (except for the usual reserve duty, depending on circumstances).

Discharged Mahal2000 volunteers are exempt from Israeli university fees for 3 years and enjoy other benefits for discharged soldiers.
