View Full Version : Bridging the Bering Straight

Is anyone familiar with these blueprints? Reactions? I hear it would cost about 150 billion dollars to bridge tundra to tundra for a flow of oil from the Caucasus into Canada and North America. They say it would be sufficient to heat homes from Seattle down south to Santiago.

For the first time since the ice age, there could be a bridge across the Bering Strait linking Asia and North America. First, engineers must learn to deal with 55 miles of violent seas and crushing ice over the Arctic Ocean... [source unimportant]

Dude... I just love your avatar and screenname. Would you happen to be a wobbley?

Aesir: I find this subject to be nothing short of fascinating. What I would wonder though is who would finance such a project. It would cost billions. Not only would a bridge have to be built but the cost of building a road and railroad would be astronaumical. Its no doubt an interesting idea. After all, who has not dreamed of climbing into their family call and driving from their garage in the US and going to Paris or Moscow?

Good post Amigo.

I agree with Crim -- this bridge would be damn cool. I didn't realize that the water across the strait is no more than 180 feet deep - that makes it seem a little more realistic. Fascinating.

It would be great, but can you imagine the vast amounts of open space you would have to drive through if you wanted to drive across the straight? Alaska and Kamchatka(sp?) are very desolate areas.

Syberia is more desolate than Alaska. Not to mention its capability to reach 120 degrees below 0. A human being within a minute could easily die in such conditions. Its winds are furious and the ice craters very unstable.
