Yes very interesting . Don't know very much about this conflict.
I know Haile Sellassie is central to whole Rastafarian thing, and
people went crazy when he went to visit Jamaica.

Yes, the Sallasi-Rasta connection always seemed rather odd to me. As I recall, Italy went "adventuring" into Ethiopia many years prior to WWII, and essentially got thier butts kicked by the locals with spears and such.
So, when Il Duce came to power, he wanted not only to re-establish the old (Roman...) empire, but avenge the embarrassing defeat in Ethiopia.
Sallasi (am I spelling that wrong? too lazy to hit the back button)
was listed on a group of "friendly dictator" cards I had that was put out by political cartoonists some years ago. Among his more endearing traits was that he was fond of feeding his political rivals to lions....

That would all be correct. In 1896 the Italians invaded Abysinia (as it was then known as) and sent a force of 3000 under the command of General Albertone. They were met by the emporer Menelik at the battle of Adowa. The result was a humiliating defeat. Italian Prisoners were put to work building Addis Ababa's beautiful neo Baroque Cathedral. Italian sources tried to show that the prisoners were mistreated though it was probibly not true.
