The state of California has declaired a war on ferrets! These beautiful creatures who have been domesticated for over a thousand years are banned by this US State.

Ferrets are NOT wild animals. They are domestic creatures no different than dogs or cats.

Oh, you've got to be joking. Has the Land of Sunshine really lost its way so badly?

YES!

And ferrets can be confiscated by animal control officers and destroyed (killed). There exists an "Underground Railroad" which rescues such animals and sends them to Nevada.

I just read an article on this in Ferret Magazine.

As a ferret owner I can tell you these are beautiful creatures who are gentle and loving. I cannot immagine what it would be like to have a ferret taken from my house and destroyed.

If you are a dog or cat owner immagine if your pet was taken from you and put to sleep. Its too horrible to immagine!:(

I don't agree with it, but the law was written because they are afraid of escaped ferrets reproducing and becomind a nusance. IT's that same law that won't allow me to have my damn sugar glider that I've been dreaming about.

Sorry Jillian. Californians really need to do something about this stupid law.

Its such a cool state but it has ridiculous laws.

I was always under the impression that they are banned because they burrow all over the place. Someone once told me that if they escape they can cause major structural damage to buildings, fences, etc and can ruin gardens.

Is that not true?

They probibly would not live long enough to do anything like that. Ferrets are defenseless against dogs, cats or coyotes. If they have been raised in a home they depend on humans for food and basic care.

Cali is the most god awful state I've ever been in. Half the guns I want to purchase are banned.

Poor ferets. I like em. My cousin had one. It was the cutest thing on the planet, and smart as a whip to boot. I hate how California tries to meddle with everyone's lives.

I have a ferret (and sugar gliders, and they are both awesome pets!!!). What I don't understand is why people would have gotten these pets in the first place if they knew they are illegal. I do agree that it seems absurd as to how California handles the situation, but why get the pet in the first place?

I don't know except that is a damm stupid law. I have heard similar ordinace exists in New York City. For me being a ferret lover, these laws would be like banning cats from a state.

I used to own a dog at one time and we were inseperable. In fact one of the reasons I bought a house (no lie) was so I could keep a dog since they were forbidden in most appartments. To me owning a pet is a right all people should have. (and please dont get hung up on whether pet ownership is a right or a privilige because I couldn't care less.)

Sugar Gliders are cool too.

This country is going to the 'dogs' and all yall can worry about are ferrits? I hope their good hunters, because you might be asking them to return the favor before long. I bet PETA is crying their eyeballs out over this! All creatures are precious. If them little ferrits get loose and kill the snakes, then the rats will finish off that pit of vipers called California. I'm partial to fireants and moskitoes myself. who

ooooh...these stupid laws have me so irritated!! First of all Arnold is a traitor!! he loves ferrets, and after they were petitioned to be legal, he vetoed the bill!! 2nd of all if people would do their research, they would know that ferrets couldnt last more than a week in the wild, because as it were..they are DOMESTIC!! They would starve to death. Its not like they can breed anyway, because most of them are neutered or spayed before they are even sent to the pet shop. I hate california.

brightnshinie

actually hon, they were originally banned because these people owned a ferret and they had starved it, and left the house with their new baby inside, and the ferret got out and ate the baby. supposedly. Plus, once they get a taste of meat they want it all the time, and they are especially partial to chicken eggs. Not that chickens are an endangered species.

Thanks Brad. As a Ferret owner I am very bothered by the amount of ignorance that exists concerning ferrets.

One ate a baby? Someone got a source for this...?
This is, after all, the state that tried to legislate and make illegal "dihydrogen monoxide", since some aide heard it was "bad stuff."

Well?

Heh.

My experience has been only 2 ferrets. One was the sweetest thing on 4 legs. The other would routinely bite peoples noses/ears. Same owner, who owned them since they were pups. /shrug
