On this day, 22 years ago, March 30th, 1981, when John Hinckley Jr. Shot then President Ronald Wilson Reagan?

I know where I was. How about you?

Things I remember about that day...

President Reagan quipped to the surgeons before going under anesthesia: "Please tell me you're Republicans."

He later told his wife: "Honey, I forgot to duck."

Say what you will. In my mind, RR was one of the greatest Presidents of this past century.

I was in school, third grade to be exact. Our teacher came in with her hands over her chest screaming "The President's been shot!" and we were all sent home early. I got home & asked my mom if the president was going to die like John Lennon did & she said no. So I went to my room, turned on the radio & "Starting Over" was on.

Didn't exist.

I was, however, born in the Reagan years, which makes me feel old amongst my peers, who were all born during the reign of emperor georgivus bush the first.

Ronnie was sooooo good that he got this nation in a tremendous amount of debt.

And I think he was the idiot responsible for the disaster better known as "trickle down economics".

And now they also suspect that he had alzheimer's disease while he was still in office.

Oh yeah, he was fabulous.

This is an absolutely baseless assertion.

Not to mention its off topic.

And I think he was the idiot responsible for the disaster better known as "trickle down economics".

The democrat congressmen/women were the idiots responsible for not cutting down spending for trickle down economics to work.

Its hard for a presidents plan to work whenever his partisan Congress renders his efforts in vain.

And now they also suspect that he had alzheimer's disease while he was still in office.

Reagan was president 20 years ago, and his alzheimers didnt start to affect him seriously until a few years ago.

Ahhh... I remember that day clearly...

I was sitting there ramming an optimus prime transformer into coffee table, .... then it happened... I broke off his arm, and cried. After no response, I strategically placed it along side of my mother bed for her to step on when she woke up.

More than likely I was sitting infront of the TV singing along to the Seasmie Street theme song or watching Mr Rodgers. I was only 4 at the time.

Damned if I know, but I remember where I was when I watched Maguire break the record and when I saw the second tower fall.

I also remember where I was for my 19th birthday, but none of the others.

Ask Californians about RR's fiscal capabilities... ESPECIALLY after Jerry Brown the First. Had Congress backed Reagan, the economy might have been strong enough to have kept Clinton out of office. But, who knows.... if wishes were horses, then beggars would ride.

I STILL stand behind my belief that RR was one of the best Presidents of this past century.

By the way, his alzheimer's WOULD have been a good defense for Iran/Contra.... LOL. I really think that was his only black eye while in office. Other than that, he got the military their first Cost of Living increase in 8 years, and put us back on the road to military strength. Only to have all his work undone by that hero of the left.... Clidioton.

No it isn't,Otr said in his post that Ray Gun was one of the best presidents ever,we're disagreeing.

Its hard for a presidents plan to work whenever his partisan Congress renders his efforts in vain.

I was around then, you weren't.

He had a Republican Senate for most of his first term, and the House [under Jim Wright] pretty much kissed Reagan's a$s,he got his way.

Reagan was president 20 years ago, and his alzheimers didnt start to affect him seriously until a few years ago.

Well,we don't know that.

The only reason he came in the open when he did was to beat the National Enquier from reporting it.

Well, when Reagan took the stand, under oath,he said "I don't recall that" over thirty times, then again,he could have been lying.

Finally,to answer your question:

I was 25 years old then ,I was going to see my mother because it was her Birthday,I heard it on the radio on my way to see her.

When I got to the house I grew up in,she was asleep ,I didn't want to wake her,so I went to the ktichen, fixed something to eat, watched it on tv in the kitchen until she woke up.

I obviously was not a Reagan fan,but I was distressed about the shooting,I felt our country had already been through too much in my lifetime alone.

Do all right wing conservatives go to hell when they die?

I shouldnt let this secret out, but here goes...

We sacrafice all brown skinned people in Geroge Bushes name. We smear blood on our faces and chant and dance infront of an open fire. We kill in the name of all Conservatives! We steal from the poor and give to the rich! *evil laugh*

No idea. Let me know how that works out.

I was getting ready to go to work and I remember thinking " Oh
S**T! Not again." I was not a supporter of Regan or of most of his policies (not many people in Canada were.) but I did respect him for sticking to his beliefs.

Me being right wing has nothing to do with you making a baseless assertion.

I was around then, you weren't.

I wasnt around for World War 2 either, does that mean I cant comment on it?

Well,we don't know that.

You dont know a lot of things.

The only reason he came in the open when he did was to beat the National Enquier from reporting it.

LOL

Do you have ANY idea how proposterous an idea that is?

These conspiracy theories really get old.

I was 13, delivering newspapers. One of my customers told me about it as I was riding my bike up to her house. I went in and watch it on tv for a few... that was a rough day.

Better than some, worse than others.

He did revive the economy but at the price of the safety nets that were gone when the economy collapsed again.

I would say that Bush Jr is turning out to be a really awful president. Even worse than his dad. Thats just my left wing opinion though.

What scares me about this thread is that it hammers home the fact I am almost as old as QtrHrsmn and Criminal. ;) I actually was listening to the radio in a car and it was interupted by the bad news if my memory is correct. I believe that is when the Great Alexander Haig declared, "I am in charge here!" :D

Tip O'Neil and the socialists in Congress are responsible for the huge debt increase. Fortunately, Reagan got us out of the Jimmy "I'll Never Lie To You" Carter's pathetic, wimpy, presidency with skyrocketing interest rates. The Great Stain Maker was still a more destructive president than Carter.

http://www.rockreports.com/r/r6/g/graph2.gif

The whole image didn't print out. This chart clearly shows that, counter to the Democratic parties assertions, it was not the military spending that got us to a 5+ trillion dollar debt, rather a massive increase in social spending. This is especially so in post Reagan years, but the colored boxes at the left show that social spending went up more than military spending during Reagan's two terms as President. The point is that social spending accelerated out of control and is still out of control today. If an American congressman or senator wants to reduce the increases year to year in some of the wasteful, destructive social programs, the anti-American socialists in Congress cry that they are cutting programs and basically encourage the rabble to go on strike.
