View Full Version : The ultimate question..Why does beer taste better from a bottle? 86Dude 12-11-2001, 12:37 AM I am sure that I am the only person on the planet that doesn't know this, but its soooo much better from a bottle. Shadowhawk 12-11-2001, 12:57 AM Well, I'm not a drinker myself, but from what I've always heard it's some sort of mild chemical reaction between the can & the beer itself that taints the flavor a bit in canned beer. ResidentRice 12-11-2001, 10:12 AM Not a chemist, but yeah, basically that's what I've heard all my life. And besides even the reaction with the aluminum and beer, think about it. You're drinking beer and sucking on a piece of metal at the same time. Imagine eating a steak, and after every bite, you chew on a little piece of tin foil. Thutmose 12-11-2001, 11:02 AM You chew on your beer bottles? 86Dude 12-11-2001, 11:17 AM I figured it was some kind of reaction with the aluminum but wasn't sure. Was having a few yesterday evening, 1 from a can, 1 from a bottle, same brand, and was noticing the difference. Thats the way they sell beer at the Astrodome for big events. I'm sure it will spread from there. Thutmose 12-11-2001, 03:20 PM Originally posted by IDigFatChicks All the time. Its a fraternity thing.... you wouldn't understand.:) Yeah I know, frats are wierd. Here at HMC we just focus on outdrinking frats, without the dumb stuff they do like chew on beer cans :D We have our own dumb stuff though. DaOgre 12-11-2001, 03:59 PM They already have some kind of Miller that comes in a plastic bottle... I forget what its called, but the comercial is a cluts who drops it and it bounces or whatever... Who knows... Anyways yeah I can see Mikes point as well... if your tounge is on the metal bottle itll be different than the glass can er... juxtaposition... Im confused now DaOgre 12-11-2001, 04:00 PM In retrospect...to find out who was right, Mike and I or you other losers, you could pour beer from a bottle, and beer from a can into 2 cups... assuming your right, and there is a chemical reaction... you should be able to taste the difference. ResidentRice 12-11-2001, 05:34 PM Wonderful idea, Nathan! Beautiful! So, when are we gonna try? New Year's? Thutmose 12-11-2001, 05:48 PM Originally posted by IDigFatChicks Wonderful idea, Nathan! Beautiful! So, when are we gonna try? New Year's? Mike, who are you trying to fool! After you taste the first beer you will be puking in the toilet before you can even taste the second! Seriously though, I would be interested in finding the results of this test on New Years, assuming we can find a person willing to throw the party. ResidentRice 12-11-2001, 06:11 PM =( Patrick's house isn't available this year? I think I can host it as long as its kept within two degrees of separation from me. As in, my good friends, and good friends of my good friends. I don't want another replay of my 17th (right? or was it 16th?) bday party when half of Agoura was at my house, and my mother was collecting empty cans of bud out of her rose bush a week later. Shiver. Don't want that to happen again. Yeah, that was the one where Rachel Senko showed up. Manu 12-11-2001, 06:16 PM Party at Mikes can it be? Thats funny ya bring it up Nate. I was just going to send an email (just being I thought this morning into work I should do it) to all the crew about whats up for new years. Mike, is this a go, or a maybe? ResidentRice 12-11-2001, 06:44 PM Don't plan on it, but if there's nowhere else to go, yeah. But I'm serious about the 2 degrees rule. Like, I want to know very well more than half of the people at the party. You know how my parents are with us drinking, and I think they're going out this year, anyway. Hmmm. Oh, yeah, can we have someone besides my parents supplying the alcohol for this party? They don't mind, but I'd rather not have them give us any more alcohol, considering they've probably donated a couple of hundred bucks worth of consumables to our worthwhile endeavours so far. Ask Pat about it. He got to enter the sacred temple with me one day. The Beer Cooler. ChaoticThoughts 12-12-2001, 03:06 AM Im not sure, maybe liquids get a small tweek in taste when stored in aluminum. Contraband 12-12-2001, 03:27 AM MIKE - ask cody about it . What did they donate the night that i was there?? at codys??/ hmm....? I thought you worked at a liquor store? ResidentRice 12-12-2001, 10:06 AM You wanna blow me, Jew boy? And you still owe me an eighth of, um, yeah, that funny smelling oregano in a little plastic bag. So you, my friend, should not be talking! ChaoticThoughts 12-14-2001, 04:38 AM Another idea: The aluminum is not much of an insulator. Glass is. So beer in cans can change temperatures quickly, which is not very good for beer. hammegk 12-14-2001, 09:34 PM Bottles do have one minor problem. Put a can & a bottle on ice but where the sun can hit them. Leave for a few hours and try that 'taste-test'. Cans ARE better sometimes!:D 86Dude 12-17-2001, 03:58 PM A little off my original subject, but one time I had a party at my house when the parents went to the 87 orange bowl. Well, it ended up being one of those parties like you see in 16 candles: Pizza on the turntable, strange female in my waterbed, Def Leppard CD GONE!! Moms underwear and other stuff gone, guitar strings broken, strange things in the fish tank, and some dork spray painted one of our cows!! Yes, I lived on a farm, I can't believe some dipshit tagged our cow. :D 92Notch 12-18-2001, 03:01 PM Originally posted by ChaoticThoughts Another idea: The aluminum is not much of an insulator. It is if you do not buy it cold and need to cool it down, of course this is assuming your not the kind of guy that'll babysit an opened beer for an hour. :) :) ResidentRice 12-18-2001, 03:43 PM Originally posted by 86Dude Yes, I lived on a farm, I can't believe some dipshit tagged our cow. :D All I gotta say is, "you win" Squalo 12-26-2001, 01:58 AM According to the January 2002 issue of Maxim, pg. 38... Q: Why does bottle beer taste better than beer from a can? A: Actually, both containers have flaws that could be responsible for making your Old Milwaukee taste like...well, Old Milwaukee. Even though the inside of a beer can is covered with aprotective coating, the highly acidic brew can eat away at the aluminum and infuse your beer with a putid eau de can. Combine that with the metal you taste every time your lips touch can, and it's no wonder your sophisticated palate prefers bottles. (Plus, they make much better weapons.) However, cans are better protection against beer's worst enemy--light. Even exposure to the lights in a 7-Eleven cooler can make beer taste like Richard Simmons' crotch sweat. Pouring canned beer into a glass and avoiding beer in served in clear or green bottles--brown does block light--is your best bet for good beer. "Preference for cans or bottles can come simply from the way they make you feel," says Sam Adams founder and brewer Jim Koch. "I think cans ae for idiots to crush on their foreheads." Ah, Darwinian evolution at its finest. So, i guess everyone was right. jwreck 12-26-2001, 03:20 AM Even exposure to the lights in a 7-Eleven cooler can make beer taste like Richard Simmons' crotch sweat. OK, that's an image I could have done without!! Shadowhawk 12-26-2001, 03:46 AM ROFLMAO! I want to know how he knows what Richard Simmons' cratch sweat tastes like in the first place:D:D:D I have heard what he was getting at stated before however, hence dark bottles for some brands:) JoeyNormal 01-02-2002, 04:22 AM Did you know, I had never, never, noticed this little problem? Now when I drink from cans it's barely bearable... How odd.... jwreck 01-02-2002, 02:34 PM Originally posted by JoeyNormal Did you know, I had never, never, noticed this little problem?
