View Full Version : Music of today...getting soft?
ChaoticThoughts 12-08-2001, 04:14 AM Is it just me, or is average new music seeming soft?
I thought that there would be some section of music that would get more and more hardcore, raw, and etc.
But it seems that most music is just getting more mellow. And the bands that claim to have the punk-ass/bad-ass image are even mellow. Im sure this is not the first time music has done this, but the first time I have noticed it.
Also, quality has gone down. Many performers depend on digitial editing to make their voices sound good.
jonnyofthedead 12-08-2001, 05:35 AM Try listening to some Napalm Death or Nasum. Not mellow. No punk-ass image. And certainly, absolutely no digital effects or editing.
All the rapcore artists hitting it big-time now are trying to follow in the footsteps of limp wristed! It makes me sick!!! If you want to check out some real rapcore check out bands like Primer 55, E-Town Concrete, Wolfpak, Biohazard, etc. Not this weak ass bullshit like limp wristed.
Did I mention Fred Durst is a ****ing ***?
Snouter 12-08-2001, 12:18 PM Corporate music for the masses played on monopoly approved FM stations is flaccid to say the least. In the late 60's, if Brittany Spears was around should would have been a second rate groupie at best. In this age of plastic music, insead of sucking what some piece of trash like her should be, she is sucking the wealth from brainwashed people's wallets.
One thing I can't stand is seeing exotic musical instruments ruined by idiotic music video directors and writers. The most recent being Creed (their song that rips off Zeppelin's Kashmir riff) dunking a PRS single cutaway in this flood scene.
SRV DID "the flood" scene in "Couldn't Stand The Weather" in the same way The Doors DID Ed Sullivan's show. They will never play that video again probably because it will blow the little Creed guys and their video right out of the water.
I agree100%. Look at how many used to be fairly hardocre bands are totally changing it up to apeal to the masses? incubus, Limp Bizkit, hoobustank, etc etc.
Back in the day they were fairly 'hardcore.'
There is good punk still in the world. Check out warped tour next summer when it comes around. A 25 dollar all day punk bonanza...Last years top picks were AFI, Rancid, Pennywise, etc etc
I was a big limp wristed fan back when $3 bill yall was new, but each album along with fred durst has gotten progessively gayer
Contraband 12-08-2001, 04:10 PM Reminds me of stinkybutt, I mean incubus, and that other band - whos butt stank?
ChaoticThoughts 12-10-2001, 12:42 AM The problem is that all the bands with something to offer are never heard of. At least the internet can act as a resource for music, mp3s, etc.
I just wonder why the crapy stuff is so popular.
slayr420 12-10-2001, 01:33 AM Music of today, flat out sucks. I can pretty much name the whole playlist of 92.3 K-Rock and 103.7 FNX (two big northeast stations).
Before I begin, I worked at a radio network (Citadel) and only about 15 of our 350+ radio stations even took requests, much less even played them. They just record your voice and play it when the song pops up next in the queue.
Creed - my sacrifice
Linkin Park - in the end
Staind - outside
Adema - the way you like it
Drowning Pool - sinner
Puddle of Mudd - blurry
Tantric - breakdown (yeah, its like 5 months old)
Limp Bizkit - (i usually switch when I hear Fred)
also, lately, they've been playing early 90's classics like
Cypress Hill - insane in the brain (always played on FNX at like 430)
House of Pain - jump around
Alice in Chains - rooster
anyhow, this crap just makes me sick. I think the companies should stop paying networks to play their junk. Staind is so incredibly overplayed, and I don't know of anybody who listens to that song anymore without changing stations. The Nu-Metal scene just sucks, unfortunately, the only other alternative is Pop or Gangsta' Rap, and neither are faring much better.
Just goes to show why I don't listen to the radio when I can get my faulty Ford CD player to work. Seems I blew out the deck, because it won't read any dupes, and usually doesn't read originals, and if it does, its after its ejected with an error message after the 14-25th try. When it DOES work, it sounds like an FM radio static like you're losing the signal. I am currently accepting donations for a new cd player.
Thats the thing slayr. Some of the songs ARE good, but they get played into the ground. It pisses the hell out of me.
I used to be a decnet staind fan (still like their old stuff) but now I can't stand listening to them.
The current playlist here is anything linkin park, staind, puddle of mud, and then 5-10 others, and they jsut repeat over again...it pisses me off like no other.
Calypso 12-10-2001, 04:31 PM thats why i dont listen to the radio.esp. kroq(the station here that plays all of that stuff) i only listen to the radio in the car and even then i usually end up listening to classic rock or a cd
86Dude 12-17-2001, 04:39 PM Ohh, you guys hit a BIG sore spot with me. It pretty much all sucks. Its almost entirely rap dominated or R&B. All the alternative bands are mainstream. Its a F'in joke. The last really good music dissapeared (with a few exceptions) 8 years ago. Same damn songs, just different words. Drop tuned guitars, no solos, and a bunch or retarded ass monkeys playing some uninspired power chords. Throw in some dorky bass heavy backing lines, and you have the recipe for musical stupidity. I can't think of one popular band in today's world with even a hint at musical talent at guitar, bass, drums, or otheriwise.
Rap = Trash in every sense of the word. Destroying music as we know it with dispicable lyrics, and assorted nonsense from the most diseased, useless, popular culture that ever existed.
Rap Metal fusion = Even more trashy. White boys trying to capitalize on raps popularity and looking really, really, stupid doing it.
Brittney Spears = Skinny ass, butt ugly, slut from hell. Surprised she doesn't have her own burger. Special sauce, lettuce, sleaze, pickles, onions on a sesamae seed whore. I could probably make a fortune making life size Brittney gun targets, selling them at Wal-Mart. Hey, thats a damn fine idea!
Maybe next time I will tell you how I really feel about it.
ChaoticThoughts 12-18-2001, 12:44 AM Hey man, Britney Spear-sucker should have her voice box ripped out with a rusty hook. But I would still **** her.
I was lucky enough to grow up when there were a few decent bands in fame: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, so on. But I pity the little dumbass kids today, this is all they have.
As for me, I will survive off mp3s, old cds, and classic rock and talk radio.
James 12-18-2001, 01:45 AM This thread could have been written 5, 10, even 15 years ago ... just change the name of the bands. Radio sucks now, it sucked then, and will most certainly suck in the future. Fact is, once a band makes "popular" radio, they're probably over, or well on their way (with some exceptions). Which means you gotta dig deep.
Alternative music is a mythical "genre" created by record label marketing departments. One of the worst things to happen was "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Suddenly the music industry was hot to sign the next big "alternative" artist ... which is complete bullshit. But how much airplay did the "Bleach" album get, back in the SubPop days? Radio has no pulse, but the music isn't dead.
I saw Modest Mouse a couple months ago ... and they smoked the place. Same thing with Superchunk. I saw a "band" called Kid Dakota a couple weeks ago ... one guitar and a drummer. Hokey Smoke Bullwinkle ... what a great sound (their EP doesn't do 'em justice, though). On the 21st, going to catch Pigface on the "Preaching to the Perverted" tour. That should slaughter a few brain cells.
andylane 12-18-2001, 12:39 PM i stopped listening to 'popular' music for a long time now.
when the 'alternative' hit in the 90's i thought that was bad... it got worse with the lame 'hip-pop' tripe that we have today.
at lease people are still putting out techno...
Aphasia 12-18-2001, 02:23 PM Popular music today is pretty lame...I haven't listened to the radio in who knows how long. To be honest, I'm not sure where I've found the bands I listen to...mostly through friends, I guess. But, like James said, if you dig deep enough, there's some great stuff out there. If you're looking for more 'hardcore' music, there's a ton of it, but it's sure as hell not going on the radio. I sorta doubt 'Babyraper' by Gwar is going to get much radio play time...but if you're looking for 'hardcore', they're about as hard as you get (a bit much for me, but some people love them).
There's a whole section of industrial music that is really fantastic, and still pretty hard - check out Laibach (who did a Slavic Satanist band cover of the *entire* musical 'Jesus Christ Superstar'), Therion (metal-opera), Apoptygma Berzerk (great industrial, and 'Love Never Dies' combines industrial goth with 'O Fortuna' from the opera Carmina Burana), and Skinny Puppy (really weird stuff, but fantastic).
Anyways, my point is - it's out there, it's just not on the radio...
mrWr0ng 12-20-2001, 10:28 PM there are a couple of good bands on the radio: TOOL and radiohead. i can give you those two :)
most of the good bands are coming from the suburbs now instead of the big cities, but the prolem there is that mommy and daddy buy everybody's set-ups, so all the bands with decent equipment are bunches of rich-kids.
but you can all help my band to become huge, check out our mp3s in the arts section and support us.
as for the rest of the music:
limp bizkit: pure ass made into music. the guitar was decent, but everything else sucked ass.
staind: would aaron lewis like some cheese with that whine?
linkin park: what the ****?
eminem/bubba sparxx: stay in the trailer park. your family misses you.
britney spears: you owe your pimp over 25,000 dollars. shut your hole and go get his money.
creed: first time i heard them, i thought "hey! pearl jam's got a new single out!"
lifehouse/nickelback/puddleofmudd: first time i heard them, i thought "hey! pearl jam's got a new single out! wow it sucks!"
that is all.
PFDarkside 01-10-2002, 06:14 PM Puddle of Mudd - blurry
Tantric - breakdown (yeah, its like 5 months old)
Alice in Chains - rooster
Uh, I like those songs... Actually, i love AIC. They rank right up there with Slayer/Metallica/Led Zep/Pink Floyd for me...
Rancid kicks ass! They even turned down a major label deal to stay with the indie. How cool is that!?! (Matt Freeman is one of the best bass players ever. No virtuosos in punk? Check this dude out! "Detroit" and "Maxwell Murder" are great for anyone that wants to download them... ;))
Radiohead makes me wanna puke. Nuff said. ;-) Could be bad memories of a former roomate though, he LOVED them, I hated him.
A real shocker, listen to Staind's indy CD...talk about hard as hell.
ChaoticThoughts 01-10-2002, 11:32 PM Radiohead is too mellow, much I could understand if people only listen while high.
86Dude 01-13-2002, 07:25 PM Today's music is a disease. A malignant cancer spreading its influence everywhere. You can definitely tell that IQ's in this country have dropped just by listening to the music. If there is any talent out there then I certainly haven't seen it. Same old crap, same drop tuned guitars, overused power chords. The stupid population gets what the stupid wants I suppose, hence N'sync, Brittney, and that lame, decadent, useless sign of a diseased culture, RAP!
JoeyNormal 01-13-2002, 07:47 PM Don't insult Rap; good rap is good, pop rap is shit, much like with rock.
And there are great hardcore bands - just they aren't popular...
Lowtide 01-24-2002, 02:47 PM ... thank god for AM radio.:(
Pony Babe 01-24-2002, 03:09 PM I hate Todays music.... I love the 80's
Zombie Jesus 01-30-2002, 03:08 AM Music has always been bad. dont delude yourself by thinking pearl jam and nirvana are any diffrent, because its the same mainstream crap.
its been going on for ages. Nsync and BSB are the new beatles. The more things change the more they stay the same.
AverageJoe 01-30-2002, 03:45 AM so if everything in life is so circular, then that would make you the stereotypical *******, right?
