I used to get horrible ones from running with the wrong kind of shoes. Once I got running shoes I didn't get them anymore.

What was it that caused them for you?

hmm.. could very well be the shoes...

I agree withCA, shoes are a very important factor. You might also try something to keep your shins warm while running. You know, a little bengay to heat them up and loosen the muscle and maybe legwarmers, if they even sell them anymore.....I'm hoplessely out of fashion!! :D

And instead of "running" everyday, alternate with low impact exercise. I ran for years in the Navy.....they MADE me, but I got to love it. That worked for me, but some get them and it never gets better. All you really need is to get your heart rate going, so running isn't the only way to go for aerobic exercise.

Good luck.

Make sure that you are stretching adequately before you begin running....and warming up...also, it's imperative that you have the right kind of good 'running shoes'.

Yes this is essential. First let them heal complety which for me back in high school took about a month before jogging. I had x-rays and the stupid orthopedic doctor said my running days were over since unwanted bone material was forming as a result of the irritation in the shins and since I continued to run enduring the pain.

(Do non-impact aerobics meanwhile.) Once it is healed, before jogging, do a variety of leg slow stretching and stretch the calf in a variety of angles. I generally just stand on a step of a curb of whatever is available and let the heels drop down way below the front of the foot.

Here is a calf strecher you can buy or make yourself.

Princess, have you read Shape magazine? They usually list good shoes to run with. Asics? I don't know if that is how they're spelled, usually rate the best.

That magazine is pretty decent, btw :)

Shin splints are basically very tiny stress fractures in the shin bone. Usually caused from running or high impact exercise. GOOD running shoes like New Balance, Saucony's or Asics would help fight this problem. no $20 blue light specials price wise, though. Most of these shoes are in the $75-100 price range. But, you get what you pay for. My Saucony's lasted me a year, and I ran 4 miles a day.

Snouter is right, though. Give yourself a break from running. Try riding a bike or similar exercise until they heal, otherwise they just get worse

They're ugly, but you're not joggin' for style :) They are kick ***! I'd purchased ADIDAS jogging shoes, and I still wasn't comfortable and my shin splints weren't noticably reduced. So my husband commented that these odd looking shoes were used by alot of the track team at U of H ... he said the two women in his class that run for U of H recommended them! They're definately worth it.

I think it's fair to say each person's body responds differently. :)

Either way, are you going to be HELPFUL or just a rude spectator?

eh, the best advice has already been posted: stretch, don't jump straight in, instead give your body a while to acclimatise, generally don't do stupid stuff. 'bout as helpful as I get, I'm afraid....

I just came back from a strenuous speed walk, these shoes are insanely comfortable! There is no way that you can tell me a good shoe doesn't provide ANY benefit! I'm in love with my shoes, as ugly they may be ... LOL.

I have no idea what they're called... they're unusually odd looking, so they should be easy to identify though! LOL
