i photochopped my first smilie, but i can't seem to finish it.

how the heck can i make the back on this .gif transparent... i just want to see the smilie, not it's white background (the white behind the smilie, not the white in his sign).

any help would be appreciated!

use the magic wand to select the white parts. then say "select inverse" copy (CTRL+C) it. Make a new picture (The dimensions will already be good, it uses the dimensions of whatever is on your clipboard). Paste. now should should have the smilie with the sign, on top of the background, which is transparent. now here is the important part. DO NOT FLATTEN THE IMAGE. just go to save as, and then save it as a .gif

let's see.. I did as Midnight says and lets see if it works.

nope.. whenever I had to save it, it forced me to save it as a single layer !

you jsut clear away the white stuff
why would you need more layers?

well, I did it all, inverted (had to find the function since I use paintshop, not photoshop!) made new, copied as a new layer and then tried copy as a new selection. No matter what I did, every time I tried to save it, it said I had to flatten

Are both of you using Paintshop? I'm using Photoshop, maybe that's it. I'll look around and see if its one of the options to have the background default as a transparency

when I create a new image, it sets it as transparent.. you can see the little checkerboard behind the smilie in one of my pics

I do use Paintshop.. maybe you need to learn how to use it ;)
