I wanted to open up a new discussion here on a topic that many of us are familiar with.
I read a fascinating book not long ago entitled "The Bible as History" which gives some really amazing information regarding the Bible. Among other details:
-The people who were to become known as the Hebrews were a race of nomadic heardsmen who originated from Chaldrea in Northern Mesopotania. The account given by the Bible of Abraham comming from Ur was probibly untrue though he did reside in that region. The Egyptians did know of these people as being warlike barbarians who entered the land of Canaan and later entered the kingdom of Egypt which was ruled by pharos who were not of Egyptian origin. They where they were given priviliged positions but were later enslaved after resentful Egyptians rebelled against their foreign overlords.
-The city of Jerico was destroyed by an earthquake, though the sack of the city probibly predates the recorded conquest by Joshue.
-In coastal regions of the Sinai, mana, the dew from a type of tree does rise as mist in the air and does fall as it was recorded in the time of Moses.
-Also at the time of Moses the water level of the Red Sea did fall to such a level to which it was possible for people to cross. It was also subject to strong tides which did flood and this could have destroyed the Pharo's army as they chased the Isrealites.
-Various myths around the world record a great flood. This was known by many people from the ancient greeks to the Hindu's.
-The city of Sodom is currently believed to be at the bottom of the super-saline waters of the Dead Sea. It may have been destroyed by a rare earthquake or volcanic eruption and swallowed by the sea.
Any other ideas on this?
