What sets the state of Louisiana aside from any other state in the U.S.?

We are unique enough to have parishes opposed to Counties. Anyone know the reasonging behind this?

Because it's a backwater, hick state??? j/k LMAO! :D:D

Part of it had something to do with the land originally belonging to the French as I recall (Native Americans aside of course:) ), but I thought there was some other reasons as well...

I heard this stuff AGES ago in school but have long since forgotten, and I'm too unambitious to look it up on the net :p

Yeah, from what I understand it somehow relates to the French. You also have a different legal system that is based on the French system.

That is correct, most of our heritage, laws, etc was developed from the French. That is why we still have alot of French customs..Louisiana is just a unique state on its own. Everyone should check it out at some point..My My My..all that good cajun cooking.
