Anyone have any clue why other then her marriage to John F Kennedy? She came from a society family (the Bouviers). America was coming out of it's Cold War catharthis of the 1950's and looked forward to the young, fresh image of the dashing young President and his beuatiful, cultured wife. However, I would rank Eleanor Roosevelt as the most influential First Lady, though much of her fame was gained following the death of her husband in 1945. She was a terrific and energetic emissary, and had an instrumental role in the formation of the United Nations. - Andy Snouter 11-26-2001, 11:05 PM I heard some of psychotic President Johnson's tapes the other day. To Jackie Kennedy's credit, when the meglamaniac Johnson called her to meet with Teddy "The Swimmer" Kennedy and some of the other members of the insider trading, moonshine running clan, she tried to decline the offer of a 707 to come and pick her up citing that she thought it was a waste of taxpayer money. If that was sincere, and she didn't know she was being taped, she must be given an award of some kind. That type of comment is unheard of in politics and a major taboo. I think it was because of her youth and good looks. She and John were so attractive together. It was said that she broke more traditions than any first lady in history. |
