View Full Version : Just about Pocket Knifes?
Spießer 01-20-2003, 03:52 PM If I hear one my person say that I will go crazy.
We are not about chocolate, knifes, cheese or any other stereotype. Look at the Swiss Army.

Problem is, Switzerland uses foriengers for the tourism industry, just like anyone else.
When I was in Paris, there was 15,000,000 vendors selling cheap eiffel towers, barets, and french flags.
When In Germany they have the Hoffbraehaus (Know I spelled that wrong) It's a tourist magnet, no one goes there except toursits, cause they want to see liederhose wearin sausage eatin stereotypes.
When in America, everyone wants a mini Statue of Liberty, or Liberty Bell, or whatever other Americana Trinket they can get there grubby little hands on.
Same thing in Switzerland. Swiss chocolate and watches, knives, and coo-coo clocks everywhere, to the point of being annoying.
If that is whats promoted by your tourist industry, then that is how you will be known. Try not to take offense... just laugh at all the tourists.

Just cause you fly into Zürich doesn't make it the capital.
But you have a point; we call it here: "Downtown Switzerland"

Spießer 01-20-2003, 04:26 PM We are the smallest Federalist Country in the World.
If you don't know, Federalist means the country is broken into states. We have 26 cantons (states)! Each with seperate government, but all must conform to the confederation.
Confoederatio Helvetica (CH) - is the proper name for my country.
Other Names: Die Schweiz, La Suisse, La Svizzera, La Svizzra, Switzerland.
Swappy 01-20-2003, 04:57 PM I remember trip I took there, bus dropped us off right next to the knife/watch/chocolate/cheese shops.
Talking about the Swiss
Course no one ever mentioned the standing army where about every male is required to participate in the military and be ready at a moments notice with weapon and uniform all ready along with the mandatory bomb shelters and all the hidden weapons in the hills, highways with tank shields and bridges/tunnels that can disabled with a push of a button.
Now if the US could shut down the countries entrances/exits in 2 hours, hmmm....

Griff 01-20-2003, 06:48 PM Your patch - is that the Edelweiss? I'd heard that only the elite mountain troops wore that, but I guess in your area just about everyone's a mountain trooper, huh?
Thanks for the cool pictures.

Yes it is edelweiss. It is to pay tribute to the Gebirgsjäger (of all countries). I have training in that area also.
Criminal 01-21-2003, 05:01 AM The Swiss Army is known to be one of Europes most formatable fighting forces. This may be the reason that the nation has not been at war since 1840.
BTW: Spieber, do you have any information on the Swiss Civil war of the 1840s? I find that subject interesting.
Jay13 01-21-2003, 07:38 AM Neat photos. Thanks for sharing :)

The best that Europe has to offer in the way of strongest military are the U.S. Forces stationed there. Other than that, there's not anyone that the Israelis' couldn't beat.
Spießer 01-21-2003, 01:59 PM QtrHrsmn:
some ego you have there.
jay:
no problem :)
Criminal:
I would not know about most formatable fighting forces. We couldn't take somone with larger army. Though ours is one of the best trained and equip in all of europe.
I wouldn't call it a "civil war". The conflict was short. In all, France, Prussia and Austria were scared about a nationalistic Switzerland. We were strengthed our constitution and set up the new capital in Bern. We basically follow a similar outline of the US constitution. We set up a Federal Government, for which there was none before. In stead of each Canton (state) in the Confederation (there are 26) controlling their own army, money, treaties (ect). We set up a Federal Government with a constitution to do that. Like the US constitution, ours gave us freedom of the press and religion, the right to live in any canton, and equality under the law. Lets just say, that France and Prussia were frieghtened by a Federal Switzerland. So we assured them that we would always remain neutral, which was are idea all the time. If we weren't, our popualtion is divided so that the german, french and Italian Cantons would spilt. No swiss disires this, so we have always stayed neutral. Anything else?
Shall I translate a Swiss History Book, while I am at it? ;)
Edit: HEY! My name is Spießer! "ß" is an german symbol for "ss".
So call me Spiesser not Spieber. Switzerland outlawed this 60 years ago, cause it was too confusing for SOME people. But I still love it. :)

You are the funny man, joe dirt.
EVERY Swiss male is liable for military service. 42 is the cut-off age. If you won't or can't serve, you must pay a military tax.(Though you can get around that tax if you serve the government in another way)
We have our "Pro" military (career) and then our Civilian Military.
