Switzerland was a strict neutral during WWII, but although it avoided openly siding with either the Axis or Allies, a small number of Swiss citizens without offical approval did actually volunteer for service within the German Wehrmacht. In fact, between 700 and 800 Swiss volunteers are known to have been incorporated in the Wehrmacht during WWII. Of these, at least 300 are thought to have been killed in action. No single unit of Swiss volunteers was formed during WWII though, and all volunteers served on an individual basis within the Wehrmacht. The vast majority of Swiss volunteers were accepted into the ranks of the Waffen-SS, notebly in the 5.SS-Panzer-Division Wiking and the SS-Standarte Kurt Eggers.

So, you're telling us....Of a population 4,200,000 in 1940 0.000190476 of the population volunteered? At most? (I used the 800 figure in my calculation.)

If the figure is limited to German speakers, the figure "rises" to 0.000285714 . Assuming that 2/3 of the population was German speaking in 1940, as it appears to be now:

Sorry, couldn't find the figure by language for 1940.

Hmm, if you limited it German speaking males aged 18 to 35, you might get to 1/10 of 1%.

Glad to see very few of the Swiss were taken in by Hitler's BS. My respect for them has risen accordingly. No wonder Goebbels whined about them so much. They wouldn't buy what he was sellin'.

That was your point, wasn't it?

You should be.
What is your problem?
They didnot fight in the wehrmacht for hitler, hardly any german did. They fought for Fatherland and Honor.

Your history is narrowminded, you know nothing of the people you are talking about.

And as for a point. I didn't have one. THis isn't a debate forum. I just stated historical facts. Few people knew there were actually swiss that fought in WWII.

btw - I sense major hostility coming from you.

Interesting. Did any Swiss also serve in the Allies side?
