Studied this in college a good bit..What significance does it play on today?

Does it compare to anything happening today?

Well, we no longer hunt out people to burn at the stake. But its the darker side of our fuked up human nature. We still have the simular mentality to hunt down and kill the "evil" people, even though all those witches were just people that pissed off a neihbor.

I thought that it was basically a bunch of girls seeking out attention by "telling" on other people.

I heard the Salem high school mascot is the witch. They have concocted an entire tourism industry based on the witch trials. I wonder if any witches will get pissed off like the native americans did about indian team names.

A really good movie that explained it all was the Crustable (sp?) staring Daniel Day Lewis. It was really a scarey time. A group of girls dabbled in witchcraft and then made up some lies about a number of the citizens of Salem. It led to a number of people being put on trial and being hanged.

As far its relevance to today, I think that we still are seing people being accused and convicted falsely. The witches trial was an example of tyrany of the worst sort. This is what happens when public hystaria is put ahead of common sense.

I once posted this link but I think its extremely important that people see this so I will post it again. This is an example of modern variations of the Salem trials:http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Embassy/9062/witchhunt.html
