Buggery, which is defined as to force anal sex upon an unwilling victum (e.g. to bugger: Bugger off etc) owes its origins to the middle ages. It comes from the word Bulgaria. This is a reference to the Cathari religion which was said to have originated in that country. The Cathari were a cryptic group who believed in the New Testiment but rejected the old testiment. Cathari were said to be a neo-Manichist sect indicating that they believed, as the earlier religion of Manichism that God and the Devil were both powerful entities but that God ruled the heavens and the Devil ruled the earth. Mani, the founder of Manichism believed that both Jesus and Buddah were phrophets of God, as were Noah, Abraham, Moses and Zoraster. The Cathari had a Church which was influential with Europe's rising urban middle class. In England this sect was known as the Weavers. In the 14th Century the Pope condemned this religion as heresy and formed the very first Holy Office, or Inquisition to combat the heresy. He also launched the Cathari Crusade to exterminate the sect. As a result the sect was virtually extermanated. The Crusade was marked by great cruelty, especially in France. One of the greatest massacures occured in the city of Toulouse France. When an officer of the Crusade asked his leader how they would distinguish the heritics from the catholics he was told "Kill them all and let God sort them out."

During the inquisitions which followed, believers in the Cathari faith were forced to confess to various lies about their faith, mostly under torture. Because the Cathari had a celibate priesthood who renounced sex and marriage they were suspected of homosexuality. The inquisitors forced them to state that the initiation rituals of the Cathari included anal sex.

Because the Cathari church had its origins in Bulgaria, they were called "buggers" as a corrupted form of "Bulger." From this the word bugger was coined to refer to anyone who forces anal sex on another.
