View Full Version : Dream Catchers
Monster 01-01-2003, 07:19 AM Do they work for you? If so, where do you have yours placed?
I've had one hanging over my doorway for years and years, and it's always seemed to work for me. Since I'm gone so much of the time, tho, I'm giving mine (it's an itty bitty keychain one) to A_open_fire_.
ISUPonyBoy 01-01-2003, 12:47 PM I used to have one. It was lost in my move back from Pittsburgh and I have never replaced it, atleast not yet. I have noticed a distinct change between having it and not having it.
John
You have re-inspired me to get a new one.;)
Foul Temptress 01-01-2003, 01:45 PM I have a white heart shaped pillow, that says Sweet Dreams hanging on my closet door knob. So far, it has worked.
Shelter 01-02-2003, 03:53 AM I have several dream catchers made by natives in Alaska when I lived there. While I dont believe in them per se I do think they can be gorgeous looking decor..
Rayney 01-02-2003, 03:54 AM Im waiting to find the "right" one......havent come across it yet.
Baboon 01-02-2003, 09:07 AM "Dream catchers"??

*is jealous* :)
I've actually owned a few of them. Some I bought at pow wows, some my grandmother gave me and some my mother has made for me. I never really gave much thought to them, which is a pity, but my family never did either. We viewed them more as decorations. I think that may have something to do with the fact that they really arent a traditional part of our aleut/inuit culture.
:: once again points at Xach and laughes his ass off ::
:)
Monster 01-03-2003, 03:42 PM They're supposed to protect you from bad dreams, etc. There's open space in them that's supposed to let the good thru, while the strings are supposed to "catch" the bad dreams, negative energy, whatever you wanna call it.
Criminal 01-04-2003, 04:14 AM I put one up and I started getting nightmares. This was no lie!
Kamikazekitty 01-05-2003, 07:15 PM I think I need one of those dream catchers. My dreams have been...interesting.....but not great. Do they really work or are you guys just jokin with me?

Jay13 01-06-2003, 05:00 AM I make dream catchers all the time and have made some pretty complicated ones. I will post a pic of the one that I have hanging up in our house. It is more of a decoration than anything else, but I notice that things feel better with it hanging up.
Right now, it lives in our living room.

I have one and once in a while yes it does work. You should have it placed above your head where you sleep. But also near direct sunlight.

what do they "do"?
The concept of the dream catcher is to collect your dreams in the webbing during your sleep, the bad dreams stay in the webbing and get burned off by the sunlight, while the good dreams filter down to the feathers waiting for your next slumber. If possible you should get one that is actually made by native americans. They bless them making them in a special way making sure the good dreams filter to the feathers and the bad stay in the webbing.
jadatrack 01-07-2003, 06:42 PM i have 3: one by my window, one by my door, and one above my bed.

Where can I find one of these here in L.A. that is made by native Americans??
Monster 01-08-2003, 02:55 PM Venice Beach has some sometimes, other than that...if you're willing to be flexible you can try the shop at Citywalk...*shrug*

Good question. :)
There are pow wows at csulb every now and again, they are plentiful there. I bought one at the last pow wow and it cost $2. :)
salach leine 01-24-2003, 12:56 AM I use one, and have since I was very little. I had horrible nightmares as a small child, and every once in a while I still do but they don't stick with me the next day like they used to. I would dwell on them for weeks before, but now it's like the catcher takes the edge off of the scariness.

You can find them at a great many stores. You can look up Native American stores on the web and see which are located in the LA area. Or you can even order them online.
Rayney 01-28-2003, 07:15 AM I found one! I had to drive an hour and a half to get it...and i havent got it up yet...but I have one!!!!
Monster 01-28-2003, 02:56 PM Oh...wow...I'd pay money to see the dreams your dream catcher would catch.
Rayney 01-28-2003, 08:15 PM I dont know whether to be flattered or fly to the US and kick your arse ;)
Chances are if you're buying from a store it is as much authentic as something from the mall.
I don't have a dream catcher, but I do have a mask of Manahowa carved by some dude on the side of the road in Hawaii. He wards of evil spirits and guides dreams.
I want to make my own dream catcher or get an authentic one sometime.
