View Full Version : This will make some people mad methinks
Noddy 12-31-2002, 04:54 AM I remember at Courtenay hill, the American artillery guys were down there. We cam in one day, i think we had to do some ambushing, there was some VC located or sighted round there. I'll never forget them guys. There seemed to be a mob of negroes there had this open backed truck, and the commander, a white bloke, i remember he called them up to the truck, they had to go on a patrol or something. And these guys, they would have to have been the slackest mob i have ever seen-i could not believe it! Half of them, they had these flak jackets and helmets-different to us as we had shirts and hats, that sort of thing. And these negroes were so slack and sloppy, i think he had to send a couple of them back to get their helmets, one guy forgot his jacket. To me it was unbelievable how ill-diciplined and sloppy they were.
Everything you see about them on TV was true. No security, carrying gun-liners and that sort of thing, chewing gum, smoking, and some of them had ear-plugs in their ears-that sort of thing. They really didn't impress me. Then we had, off Courtenay hill, a 155 gun detachment. That didnt impress me either, it looked like whover was the biggest was the one in charge.
...saw them as gunners occasionally, a medium battery-the most untidy organisation you could come across. Denzil Bourne, this big negro, he had not shirt on, the whole place was a shambles and saying ''what have you killed today man, besides time'', and the battery itself was having a problem with drugs. They did a fire mission, though it didnt fall around me. It fell short from those big 155's, and a batterys worth of around five rounds fell short amongst our troops, but luckily, none went off. They didnt even fuse them properly, so not only did they miss the target, they fortunately stuffed up and mis-fused them. I was struck by their armed forces radio, which reminded them to clean their m16s when they got in the morning, it went through each step. That was something i coulnt grasp. Thats not to criticise, because they had like, half a million men there at that stage, whatever it was. Their arir force was excellent, and so were those army cobras, they really got in and mixed it with the enemy.

Criminal 01-02-2003, 02:46 AM I dont know all that much about millitary life but I would guess if there is a breach in dicipline it is the fault of the commanders. I doubt if George S Patton would allow soldiers to look so sloppy.
Noddy 01-02-2003, 03:47 AM I think the American army could learn a lot from the British model, which we use.
RedLine99 01-02-2003, 04:53 PM Kinda interesting perspective...there were alot of units that were pretty foked up late 60's early 70's. I can only speak of my own and we were nothing like what is described above. I was up north, but I know the guys down south (where the Aussies where) had a total different operation.
And yeah, I would say some guys might get pissed reading what you quoted..but we all saw some form of it.
Here's a pic of a couple buddies of mine. They had just smoked a joint and were throwing M60 rounds into the brush (got my attention).

They both had the same last name LOL. You can see a few belts of rounds right to the left of the black guy. It was friggin hot, we were in the middle of nowhere and they figured they'd lighten their load a bit.
QtrHrsmn 01-02-2003, 09:15 PM A breach in discipline like that is most definately a commander's fault. I have seen peacetime units like that, and I have seen units in combat that were so stract that you would have thought them ready for parades.
Vietnam was a terrible time for, and to be in, our military. Trust me, it hasn't always been like that, but at the rate PC and social services are moving through the military, it won't be long until it is again.
I weep for my Army. I weep for my friend's Corps. I weep for my other buddy's Air Force. I won't shed a tear for the squids, though... They've ALWAYS been gay...:D J/K
Dezi Faerie 01-05-2003, 12:57 PM I have to say this... The US military is cr@p. After all look who our president is. I just think he didn't get enough "war" on the playfround when he was little and is now using the military as his toy. Roast me if you shall.
JoeyNormal 01-05-2003, 04:30 PM Alex might just set fire to you for that.

Although I fail to see the point you are trying to make - ie... that the US Military is crap because GW is our president - thank you for your opinion. It is my pleasure to hear such eloquent, well reasoned views, and I appreciate the priviledge of service which contributes to your ability to air them.
Have a nice day.
Dezi Faerie 01-05-2003, 04:42 PM That didn't come out right. I appologize to any one in the services. What I meant to say is what Bush is making them do is crap. My sincerest appologies once again to all those who are being fourced to risk their lives so a child can have his playground time on the big playground we call home.

Noddy, are the Italians bad soldiers because of their genetic make up?
GHOST 13 01-06-2003, 02:24 AM Yes the US Army got sloppy as hell in Vietnam. Today the US Military is the most kick-ass military in the history of the world. Also it is the largest minority employer in the US.

Dezi Faerie 01-06-2003, 08:56 AM I appologized damnit!
Corporate Avenger 01-06-2003, 10:04 AM Hmm last time I checked it was our own government and their "Patriot" act and the Homeland security act that are taking away my freedoms, not Saddam, not anybody else. How is the military stopping the gov from doing this? The 4th amendment is a thing of the past, what does the military plan on doing about this?
It baffles me when I hear people in the military say they are protecting our freedoms when our government just takes them away.
I think Smedley Butler had a grip on what the government uses the military for.
Jay13 01-06-2003, 11:09 AM hey ca, read the "patriot act" a little more closely. The only thing it and the homeland security act do is make it easier to government to prosecute terrorists.
Dezi Faerie 01-06-2003, 11:11 AM :topic: Hey QtrHrsmn btw my pic is in my profile now.

I don't know where you get your info on this, but it is not the biggest minority employer in the US.
Unless they hide when I'm around that is! Because I go to base's all the time and always wonder where are the minority's.Mostly all I see are whites.
Not to ake away from the the 'few' minority's who do join, because they have proven they want to do something besides scream ,"victim".Most don't have education,or too many kids or prison records.
This is because they have been brainwashed by or leaders, and the rich minority's who get more power and finacial gain in deceiving the mass's of minority's.IMO, any minority who calls himself a liberal has sold his soul for progress and gotten neither progress or fairness, just lost what he did have.
This is just another ploy to say the monority's are being used or victimized.Go look again.Who
