View Full Version : Reserevist in Military, Question.
whoswho 12-23-2002, 02:37 AM I had watched a show on reserevist and forgot exactly what they were saying, but it was something about how the rules are now and how they have changed since our last war.
Some are in the battle feild for a year and now they are being told they have to go back or stay longer, where before they sent in new troops to releave them after a certain period of time.
Is this because our moral has been jeopardized since then with all the new areas of tolorance? Woman and homosexuals in living quarters and combat battalians. They are told now they aren't the men they use to be, because training was scaled down to accompany the woman. Thanks to our femminist could this be true?
I don't have anyone in the reserve, but do have a son in military, but won't say what branch to protect his privacy. And men in military feel different than they did, but are not to talk about it or will be called ,'right wing' or phobics.
How can we exspect the National Guard to take up the slack, that the liberals have caused? Some are losing home and assets on these long stays. And the reason I brought this up is because on anothe web site tonight they were saying bad things like, guess they just joined to go for weekends, and I dissagree, I think they joined to be a help also. But whatever reason, should they have to spend 2 or 3 years when before it was only for 1 year active overseas duty, unless war, and we have not yet declared war. Who
Jay13 12-23-2002, 02:53 AM The advent of the full time reservist is mostly due to the major drawdown of the military after the last war (desert storm). Many of the year or longer assignments are voluntary, some are not. But the pay is better and they have their jobs held for them by law until they get back. The short story is that the reservists are there if their country needs them and they will need them in the long run.
If you join the military, expect to be called upon.

As far as I know....if you enlist in the reserves, you are subject to be called up, and may spend your entire enlistment on active duty, (and then some....enlistments can be extended, if the need arises).
What I find sad, (well, pathetic, and cowardly, actually), are those who sign up as reservists, but balk when they are called up. Both enlisted, and officer.

Yep. It can, and does happen.

No. That is not an endorsment for women or homosexuals in the military, just not the reason reservists can be placed on active duty for long periods of time. I'll get to that shortly.
I'm certain women have as much a reason, (and right), to actively defend this country as any man...but there are still problems. A given job in the military might have as a requirement the ability to lift a 75 pound weight above your head, (for example). Requirements of this type have been reduced for women....the job did'nt get easier, or the need to lift a given weight reduced. But to provide as many opportunities as possible to women, many such job requirements were 'modified', so more women could qualify for them.
Another problem....women cannot be sent into certain combat situations, yet they may well be in a unit that could be sent to a combat zone. Assume you have a 5 person team, two of which are women. You all train together, and work well as a team. Oops! Saddam get's a little nasty, and the next thing you know, you are told that your team will be sent to help deal with this matter. Of course, those two women are'nt going....so they find a couple of guys who did'nt look to busy......so much for your 'team'.
And men in military feel different than they did, but are not to talk about it or will be called ,'right wing' or phobics.
It's usually not considered a wise career move to point out some of these issues. :|

What we have here is your basic 'peace dividend' at work. Please remember to thank Bill Clinton next you see him. We no longer have an active duty military of sufficient size to do the jobs required. So we call up the second string part-timers, and hope it all works out for the best. Not a very bright idea. Now, even if we had the personnel, we still lack the hardware anyway. Not to mention the real estate, (until recently military reservations), the feds have been giving away like candy.
And the reason I brought this up is because on anothe web site tonight they were saying bad things like, guess they just joined to go for weekends, and I dissagree, I think they joined to be a help also.
They should stop whining, and live up to their commitments. Sorry, it's a rough attitude, but they did raise their right hands, and take that oath.......
But whatever reason, should they have to spend 2 or 3 years when before it was only for 1 year active overseas duty, unless war, and we have not yet declared war. Who
They should all very fervently thank Mr. Clinton for gutting our military, (once they're released from active duty....of course).

If you are in the military, yes, but National Guard, not suppose to have such long overseas stay.If you join the military you do have years to be sent whereever, but the Guard is suppose to e different. I know you probly don't mean any harm, and peace is good.Who
Shelter 12-23-2002, 03:27 AM the reserves and National guard get a ton of benefits out of being in those units, so if it comes down to them having to serve their entire enlistment on active duty then thats ok in my book. They knew going in there was always that chance. And with their jobs guaranteed and the extra money they make for being deployed it is well worth it to them and their families. IMO. I always respecteed the reserve and guard people for joining up but I never thought of them as my equal while I was in active duty. They dont get as much training and are usually quite rusty at their jobs when it comes time to do it. There is way too much slacking off in most of the units. It is easy to get lazy those other 28 days of the month when you arent doing a drill weekend. I do respect former active duty people who moved to reserve or guard to still help out after thier intial contract was up however. They are a different ball of wax. They know what it is like to be a real soldier 365 days a year, and they havent always gotten to go back to FT. Livingroom like the rest of the guard and reserves.

Too bad I didn't remember what they said on show about this last night. Thanks for reply anyway. Who It doesn't matter whether you join Active duty, Reserves, or National Guard, OR what branch thereof.... when you join, you sign an 8 year contract. You might join for two years active, and six inactive reserve, or four years active, with 4 years reserve, but it's ALWAYS 8 years. Then, if you're Reserves, or National Guard, there's a clause in your contract that says you may be sent anywhere, anytime, for any period of time equal to your total contract. On the OTHER side of the coin, when you return, no matter if it's 2 weeks or 8 years, your civilian job is guaranteed by Federal Law to still be there, UNLESS the company goes out of business.
Almost forgot, there's a saying in the Army: If you don't like it, you never should have signed the mother****ing contract.
