My sister had a outpatient surgery today to have a lump removed from her breast. The doctor came out and told my Mom that all was well. 15 minutes later he comes out, and tells my Mom that they were having trouble waking my sister up. She was suppose to be administered 15 minutes worth of anastesia (sp) but instead she was given 2 hours worth.
They had to rip the tube out of her mouth, insert anothe and stabalize her. My sister said at that point she was awake but felt paralyzed. The doctor told my Mother this could have been more serious and possibly she may not have woke up. Needless to say, the anastsealogist..catered to them all day.. Sigh..Just scary..But I thank the Lord she is well and home.

Of course the anesthesiologist catered to them. He screwed up. He was scared of a malpractice case. What did they use, sodium pentithall? Not that it matters, though.

Glad to hear your sis is okay, though...

That is scary!

People react differently to anesthesia depending on weight, metabolism, and other physical factors. I have twice been administered anesthesia when the doctors had a difficult time bringing me out of it. My experience was much like that of your sister's, at certain points I was 'aware' but could not move or speak. I felt as if I was struggling to do usually involuntary acts, such as breathing. And at totally different life stages, once when I was 17 and once when I was 32. If it was because the anesthesia was administered incorrectly or in excessive dosages, I have no knowledge of that.

I'm glad your sister is okay.

My Mom talked to a nurse who said they could not believe the doctor actually told them what really happened. They usually dont tell on each other. This case they did..
