I love shooting firearms, last week I took out my .30-06, and 45-70, week before I took out 3 22's (two with open sites, and my Marlin with a 3x9) ..... I love shooting, it's definitely challenging.

View Full Version : Any Marksmen here? 92Notch 11-06-2001, 04:07 PM I love shooting firearms, last week I took out my .30-06, and 45-70, week before I took out 3 22's (two with open sites, and my Marlin with a 3x9) ..... I love shooting, it's definitely challenging. D Durden 11-06-2001, 04:22 PM Lisa and I shoot at a local range we belong to pretty often. 92Notch 11-07-2001, 05:05 PM Only 3 of us? .... That’s terrible. What is your favorite gun to shoot (leave out cost per shot considerations)? Mine is probably my .30-06 (Remington Sportsman 78). D Durden 11-07-2001, 06:02 PM Oh heck, I don't know. I mainly shoot military rifles because they're MADE to shoot, and they're cheaper to load. I have an M-N model 44 that's a hoot to shoot. Lots of boom, enough recoil to be fun, and it's about as accurate as anyone who shoots it. I can bang a 5" steel ring at 100 yards easily enough. Alas, it is officially LIsa's gun now! I have a Lee-Enfield ORIGINALLY in .308 that's almost identical in characteristics . . . except it has a WAY nicer trigger. I like the action better on the Ruskie, though. *sigh* I have an SKS that's so accurate it pisses me off. I don't shoot it much. It's annoying as hell when you're sighting in your HK94 and all you can think about is "man, I wish I could group like that $80 SKS". My Bushmaster H-Bar and my HK94 are LOADS of fun, but I fnd I put way to many rounds through them to shoot often. I have a Mini-14 that is marginally better than throwing the bullets. Granted, they ALWAYS come out . . . they just don't always go STRAIGHT. My 10/22 SS International makes up for it, though. Cheap and accurate . . . I have an 8mm Mauser . . . for some reason. Oh yeah . . . because EVERYONE needs one! It kicks like a German mule and humps a 290 gr. bullet WAY faster than it should. Oh, and it's as accurate as anything I've got. I use it as my "sit down, shut up, and be quiet" gun. If I need it dead, I'd grab that old girl and not think twice. I have a .22 short-only Winchester gallery gun that falls under the same category as my SKS . . . if you can see it, you can hit it . . . every time. What's the fun in that? ;) We shoot lots of pistols, too. Lisa has a .32 H&R snubnose that's DISGUSTINGLY accurate. It pisses me off so much that, on occasion, when I drive my '76 Caddy I carry it. Add in the ubiquetous Glock 27 and a Norinco .45 Stainless (worked over a few times at Wilson), and that's about it other than Lisa's .45 S&W carry gun (great shooter, btw, and I'm NOT a Smith fan). Manu 11-07-2001, 06:06 PM lol...I've shot a .22 rifle in the scouts and thats it :-) I know Cody has gone and done some shooting with his family in the desert. It is something I plan on lerning more and getting into...just don't have the time... 92Notch 11-07-2001, 06:45 PM D, you shoot a 290gr bullet in an 8x57 (I'm guessing it's an 8x57)? .... That’s a tad on the heavy side isn’t it. 8x57 is nice (My dad has one that I shoot) ... it's the foreign equivalent to a .30-06 ... seems like a 170gr-220gr would be a far better bullet to use in it. I'm guessing you reload you own too, that when it get real fun (even more variables to play with)!!! My .45-70 really pounds the crap out of me ... but I love it. Something about a 300gr bullet going 2300+fps and a 405gr bullet going 1900+ fps in a gun with an 18.5" barrel that weighs under 8lbs .... it's a blast. Scott 11-08-2001, 12:28 AM I shoot a 9mm CZ high capacity (20 clip) in competition... the courses are practical situation courses...(run to box a..shoot target 1,2,3....run to box b...shoot through port at pepper poppers 2,3,4) I've shot a few .45s..... a .357 mag (that mother kicks!) and a .12 gauge shotty ;) oh..and i learned gun saftey on a .22 I'm gonna take manu shooting soon...graduate him to a bigger gun! :) Guitarophile 11-08-2001, 01:21 AM I've been shooting since I was 8 years old. Shame on Dad, but he taught me to respect a firearm really early. Showed me what a .22-BR could do to a jackrabbit at 50 yards. It didn't blow it apart or anything, but I was right there to watch it die. I know, you're thinking that's a horrible thing for a kid to see, but it really did a lot to teach me that what I had in my hands was a device for ending life. After that, it was pretty-much just benchrest shooting. We'd go about once a month, and I'd stick to a little .22 rimfire at 50 yards. When I was older, I moved on to the .22-BR (centerfire cartridges) at 100 yards. I learned how to set up and use windflags to improve my accuracy, and how to load my own shells. By around 13, I was loading 6mm shells for my dad when he'd compete with the boys at the range. He never won a trophy, but we were out there every month. When I was 14, he made me my own 6mm PPC. Hot damn, it's a beautiful gun! I wish I knew the exact specs of the scope and barrel length, but I was never too interested in the technical end. I used that gun in a few competitions as well, and brought home a smallest-group trophy for getting 5 bullets just about in the same hole (<.150 inch) at 100 yards. I've been dove hunting once, when I was about 16. Fired 20-, 12-, and 8-gauge shotguns. I even got shot in the back by a drunken moron with a 20-gauge. It was at about 60-80 yards, though, on the descending end of an arc, so none of the pellets so much as broke through my vest. Still stung a bit, though. Killing things was never really my forté, so I spent most of my time shooting at bottles and cans with my dad's pistols. He's got a .44 magnum, a .357 magnum, and a .22 Rueger semi-automatic. I liked the power of the larger revolvers, but that little .22 was a blast when it came to lightening up a 2-liter bottle in a hurry. All in all, it's a quaint little hobby. I don't see the point in all this 'ban guns' talk. When have we ever successfully banned a technology? That's just counter-productive to human nature. And damn, they're so much fun to shoot! Dest98 11-13-2001, 05:57 PM Various pistols, AK47 & M16/AR15 variants, but my fave was a full auto 9mm MP5. Now that thing was a blast. AdamJ 11-13-2001, 10:19 PM The only thing I have shot is a .177 cal Air Pellet Rifle. LOL Its not very convienet to expend firearms around the chicago area so I havent been able to get into it. But its the mother of air-powered .177s... fires pointed pellets at 925 fps... jwreck 11-21-2001, 02:07 AM I don't ever remember NOT shooting. One of my earliest memories is squirrel hunting with my Dad when I was about 5. I used to dove hunt after school by myself. We moved to Houston though and I haven't done much hunting since. Shoot, now the only gun I own is my Glock 27 (love thet gun BTW). I still go out to the pistol range on occasion, but not nearly as often as I should. Every time I go I can still hit what I'm aiming for, so I guess its not that bad. Come to think of it I haven't shot a rifle since I got out of the military in 98. I want a nice rifle but its hard on a college students budget. CodyChaos 11-22-2001, 05:10 AM Ive fired automatic weapons. The most interesting was prolly a vintage .30 Browning machine gun on a bi-pod. My favorite personal armament is undoubtably the Benelli M-3 shotgun though, you can unload 8 12guage buck shot shells before half of them hit the ground, a really ferocious weapon. Also seen em do the 25mm cannon (entirely hand crafted with a recoil system and carriage and everything, coulda come straight off a WWII battlefield) and 88mm mortar with live ammo, those were a trip. Prolly nothing to anyone whose had access to the arsenal of the US war machine but perhaps more impressive considering they were built by hand from library diagrams. Once we duct taped a road flare to a kerosene canister then shot it with an SKS. Made a pretty cool fireball at night. Betty 11-26-2001, 05:03 PM On the USMC rifle range I scored as an expert with 45 points with the M-16A2. 0-24 pts=Unqualified 25-34 pts=Marksman 35=39 pts=Sharpshooter 40+ =Expert On the 9mm pistol I'm a sharpshooter. Can't remember the way that's scored though. jwreck 11-26-2001, 07:16 PM Originally posted by pitchafit On the USMC rifle range I scored as an expert with 45 points with the M-16A2. 0-24 pts=Unqualified 25-34 pts=Marksman 35=39 pts=Sharpshooter 40+ =Expert On the 9mm pistol I'm a sharpshooter. ALOT of things have changed since I washed out of MCRD with bad knees back in August of 87:( BTW, I'm surprised Turbostang hasn't gotten into this one yet... I know he's a fairly avid shootist himself:) jwreck 11-27-2001, 02:36 AM It was 98 when I was there. I know they were in the process of changing several things when I left. Turbostang 11-27-2001, 04:27 AM I haven't been out to the range in a couple of years, but I am an avid shooter. Favorite weapon to shoot: S&W Model 629 in .44 Mag Favorite weapon in general: MAK90 Most accurate: Sporterized M1917 Enfield. Second shot usually within a millimeter or so of the first @ 100 yards. Can get about 1/4" groupings out of it. Betty 11-27-2001, 10:38 AM Originally posted by jwreck Did they change it? In boot camp I was high shooter with a 237? Yes and no. The scoring system in bootcamp and the scoring system in the fleet are completely different. Betty 11-27-2001, 10:51 AM Originally posted by jwreck It was 98 when I was there. Since then they've gotten rid of boxing started sending females to Marine Combat Training introduced the crucible event gotten rid of the crucible Momof6 11-27-2001, 11:19 AM We only have a .22, but we all go to the mountains and shoot. We blow up ballons, tie them to trees, etc and target practice. My adopted Dad used to force me to hunt with him and I hated it, but I really enjoy the .22. I'm no marksmen, but I do shoot the best of us all. To be honest, we have the gun mostly for home protection and we have considered getting me a handgun. They are very expensive though, so we haven't done it yet......sigh!! Becky jwreck 11-27-2001, 05:25 PM Originally posted by pitchafit Yes and no. The scoring system in bootcamp and the scoring system in the fleet are completely different. That explains it. They got rid of the crucible? That was SUCH a waste of time. "Hey guys, let take a long walk and BS with the DIs." Didn't learn anything. Wasn't difficult. The whole thing was pretty retarded IMNSHO. I didn't know they were sending WMs to MCT either. They had already quit boxing before I went and they made pugile sticks really weak too. Well, I could go on about boot camp all day, so I'll shut up now. Powerboss 11-30-2001, 05:20 AM Yep, I love going out shooting. I try to go as often as I can to hone my skills. I participate in 3 gun shoots now and then. Rifle, shotgun, pistol, different scenarios. It is an absolute blast, and adrenaline shot. I really cant say I have a fave, I do like the 40S&W round. My father in law has a Springfield Armory 10mm that is probably the best gun Ive shot in terms of weight, recoil, accuracy. I love shooting that thing. D Durden 11-30-2001, 11:17 AM 10mm . . . . mmmmmmmmmmmm . . . been Jonesing to pickup a Glock 10mm. If they ever make a long slide compensated one, I'll probably get one. Kinda' hurting for a .38 Super, too . . . with no explanation why. Bill, try the new .357 Sig round. Badass . . . and more accurate than the .40. If you're "Glockin'" with a .40, you can just change the barrel to do a .357. Dat's it. Casper 01-16-2002, 02:41 PM I've been pretty impressed with the way the 454 Casull has worked out. Hunting, target competition, plinking, easy and not too expensive to reload, it works for me. My wife has a 9mm but the barrel split. My 8-yr-old has been shooting it, and he is phenomenal. I'm looking for a 32 H&R magnum for him to use in competition. May have to settle on a 38spl. The 6-yr-old wants to try but his hands need to grow a little first. I currently have a 10mm that is fairly decent, although the 10mm is way overhyped in power, just as the CZ52 Tokarev is. And don't get me started on the overhyped 357 sig or 40 S&W ;) D Durden, EAA makes a CZ75 clone in full size and compact both. The large frame (not really larger though) is convertible between 10mm, 38 super and 45ACP. Its an option if you don't care for the Glock or 1911 stuff. D Durden 02-01-2002, 12:06 PM I may have to look at that . . . I carry a 1911 and a Glock 27 . . . I have NO qualms about picking up another 1911 or Glock. I just wish Glock made a long slide comp in 10mm. I think that would be fun to shoot. Jel 02-01-2002, 11:23 PM i like shooting handguns im not TOO TOO BAD of an aim but thats just MO lol......speaking of which hey dave when we going to the range again we said we were gonna shoot a few times but never went :( Donny 05-03-2002, 01:23 PM I love to go out shooting, I have a ruger 10/22 and it's very accurate and never once has it jammed up on me!!! I do it just for fun, I can put all ten shots in a paper plate from 100 yards out and thats with the plain sites, I dont care for scopes!!! Donny DngrMse 05-03-2002, 10:43 PM This is probably just a little un-pc, but a friend and I regularly go for ground squirel shoots in central CA. 22 mag bolt with variable scope, and decent hollow point ammo. On an average day, we take about 50 of them. The locals are happy that we save them the expense, and negate the need for poisons and such. It's more fun than shooting pigeons at the local lumber yard, (.22 beeman pellet gun). Paintball guns are the funnest by far...you can shoot people and joke around about it later. Worst feeling ever, I shot a girl in the tit and she sent me on this huge guilt trip. Next round I purposely didn't shoot her so I wouldn't hit ehr tit again. The .223 is fun, I like to pull back the Tee and be cocked and locked and ready to rock but it doesn't have enough power. Pistols; .22 .357 Mag .38 .45 .44 Mag 9mm 10mm No clear favorite here, depends on whats going on... Kinda. Sorta. At an indoor range, I was banging away with my .45, (had on hat, shooting glasses, and ear plugs), when I apparently encountered a 'hot load'. A sharper report, and heavier recoil than normal, and the spent case ejected straight back, and up. It hit me just above my left eye, and after checking my gun, I resumed shooting. A few rounds later, I rubbed my forehead with the back of my hand, and was surprised to see some blood.....a lot of blood. I unloaded, and locked up my gun, and exited the range. I went to the counter to enquire about a band-aid, (with blood trickling freely down my face). I got some very strange looks from the clerks, and even an "Oh my god, are you ok?" from some lady. No band-aids, but I did clean up some in the bathroom, and was able to stop the bleeding with some paper towels. I finished out my 100 rounds before leaving, too. Moral: Beware cheap, bulk ammo! Something to do when I'm retired I suppose... I learned to shoot with my ol' Gramp's Browning Semi-Automatic Rifle ... Haha, yea I was disappointed too when I didn't hear the "semi" stuck in there... It's just a .22, pretty cool though when your only thirteen. Then got to fire a Glock 18 that my buddy's dad owns, not too exciting... still fun though. I wish I could go back and shoot that M1 though. I'll buy one eventually... Tally 10-17-2007, 12:28 AM Holy crapoli this thread is an oldie! (oh sometimes my cleverness just kills me!)
