View Full Version : Civ III Players?

How many of you play Civ III? Any interest in playing a 'chain' game?

A chain game, btw, is where one person starts the game, plays for a fixed number of turns, saves the game, and passes it on to the next in line. Each player in turn runs the civ as he/she sees fit for their fixed turns. Players each gets more than one turn at being the leader, and play continues until the game ends. After each run, the player sends the saved game on, and posts his or her accomplishments, and a synopsis of their turn.

So.....any interest?

That's two of us...so far. I'm hoping a few more will express some interest.

We'll even play an easy game....(Persians, with their Immortals! World domination! Woo hoo!)....to start.

And of course, this reply also serves as a shameless bump, for those who browse DA through new posts. :D

rats ... with the XP, we could try to organize a multi-player rather than a chain game ...

We could play either competitively or co-operatively. (Co-op play is soooo much more fun).

That would be cool, but with only a few people participating, it would be hard to organize an acceptable date/time to play.

The chain game eliminates that problem.

BTW, the only two people to post demonstrated a perference for the Persians and Romans. Both of these two tribes are definitely war-monger types. The Perisans espeically so (the Immortals are basically commando-suicide-assassination squads).

How about considering some of the more peaceful tribes (my favs include the French, Indians, Egyptians and Babylonians) ?

Sounds great! I love CIV III but I'm not very good, but willing to give it a try. (No preference on civ.)

What? Play the hated Babs!? Well.....ok. Next game. First game we'll be kicking all the butt's of the previously mentioned civs. ;)

Since we now have enough people on board, I'll start the game today after work.

Here's the play order:

DngrMse
Aesir
Scott
NJ Refugee
Jay 13

First round, 25 turns each, then save and email to next in line. Subsequent turns/round will be adjusted as we go along.

While you're the leader, it's all your call. After your turn, post a synopsis of your rule, and include recomendations for those who follow. Each player may name/rename any city built, or taken during their rule, but are to leave city names left by previous rulers.

:D

Immediately, and I'll post the particulars here in a few minutes, (leaning toward standard size map, continents, temperate, 4 billion, warlord, and I'll likely knock off one or two computer opponents for this game as well).

Here's hoping for a cool starting position! ::clink::

And so it begins.....

As the very first leader of a tribe known as the 'Americans', I, DngrMse have taken it upon myself to stop their nomadic ways, and set down down roots. So in a quiet river valley, near the shore of a small sea, I have founded Washington DC. Yeah...it's a sucky name, but the peeps seem to like it.

At my immediate disposal, I have a Scout, and a Worker. I set the worker to constructing roads, and building small mines. The Scout I dispatched to the north, and found Gems! Shiny bits of colored glass! Certainly these wonders will come in handy in the far future, so I set Washington to building a team of settlers....whom I subsequently sent to the north to found a city near these gems!

Our Scout was then sent to the east, and he's reported back that elephants inhabit the river plains to our east. Excellent! These will also come in handy, I'm certain.

To date, we've had no contact with other civilizations, though our scout did spot some some purple dude scurrying about. How I hope it's a member of the Hated Babs...so we might build great armies to squash that nasty foe, (and take all his women for my....er...our own)!

We have knowledge of Ceremonial Burial, Warrior Code, Pottery, and Masonry, and our scientists are studdying the properties of a substance they say is a 'metal', and called bronze. They promise me great things once we've mastered this technology.

And so I leave the throne to my successor, with but one city, no contact with others....but certainly with some promise.

Aesir is up, and I'll try attaching the file here, so everyone can look the starting position over. No cheating though.....as in exploring, and giving hints.

25 Year Log:

The settler has set up camp in some fertile woods north of Washington. The new Town is named Valhalla, they are hard workers, and have allready produced a unit of Warriors and a Unit of Trained Spearmen, They are currently working on a Granary for the Town.

Washington continues to grow, having completed the Granary, building another settler which was sent Eastbound, it is now undertaking a wonder known only as... Colossus. It should take 40 cycles.

The Settler heading east bound got tired of traveling and set up an encampment about 5 Clicks to the SouthEast of Washington. They... being a group of gay outcasts sent from the city have aptly named the town... "Fairy land" .. they are currently working on an Elite Group of Ass Pirate Warriors.

... The warrior and scout unit from ages past still roam the countryside looking for new tribes to trade with. We have encountered The Frightening Zulu lead by Manu-nu the Great, and The great Aztec nation. We have traded knowledge with both of them, in hopes to advance our civiliation.

Toynbee has completed a book entitled, "The Largest Nations in the World" It has named The Puny Americans ranked at 5 of 6.

-Æ ( Now hand over my sword in hopes that a brave new leader will take us to better places.)

Grrr..... I know. I had the crappy starting position. So our first settler spent many years wandering around, looking for just the right area to build a city in. It's amazing how quickly a slow start puts you behind in the game.....and how hard it is to over come. Oh well...it's the hand we're dealt, (I coulda cheated btw, by restarting the game once I knew where to build....but that's cheating). So I played it the way it was.

TeddyBear is added to the play list, following Jay13. Remember guys, pass along the saved game once you've completed your turn.

*Twiddling his thumbs, impatiantly awaiting his turn*

Okay I've been playing the game for a couple of days now, and I'm a little curious as to how exactly I will know how many turns I've taken (I really don't want to have to add and subtract sciance discovery e.t.t.a.)

I've gotten a little used to the game, I'm sitting in the industrial age on a game where I finaly didn't get screwed for by map and neigbors. What exactly is the purpose of spies?

Another easy way to keep track of turns, is to activate a defensive unit in some city, then don't give him any orders. Each time the computer brings it up, hit the spacebar, and add one to your turn tally.

Anyone interested in a concurrent one city challenge game?

The premise of this game is that we all start with the same game, and never build more than one city. Throughout the the game, you are always restricted from ever having more than that single city...so any that defect to you must be turned away, and any taken in conquest must be razed. The winner will be the one with the highest score when the game ends.

I'll post a One City Challenge game today after work, to keep the interest up.

This game is also winnable! While you won't get a domination, UN, or Space Race victory, a culture victory is a distinct possibility.

DngrMse
12-29-2002, 12:27 AM
Here's the One City Challenge game, Alex o' the Greeks, Regent. My score was 153, (not bad, only got 4 wonders though....bad starting position). I built my city after the first turn, to take advantage of the wine in the area, which worked to my advantage for a while. But there are no mountains, or hills, so production was crappy most of the game.

So, wander around a bit, and pick a spot that shows more promise, and anyone can beat my score.

I was earning 53 culture points per turn, and was about 50 turns from a culture victory....which I had written off because other civs were already building their space ships, and the Romans beat me to the UN.

DngrMse
12-31-2002, 02:21 AM
Ok, come on you peeps, take the one city challenge! (Oh, and this is a harder game, in that I selected a civ that does not start with masonry, (which means an easier culture victory, because you can begin building the pyramids immediately)).
