Lets see....get your wife to leave you...start smoking 2.5 packs of Marlboro lights a day, and drinking 12 Cokes a day....also, taper down to one meal of shrimp fried rice....

I lost 30 lbs in 3-4 months....worked like a charm....lol

Dining hall food...need I say more? It's gross enough that I lose, on average, 15 pounds a semester (which, of course, I gain back when I go home and have edible food available to me again).
I also managed to lose a bit of weight at the beginning of the summer on a hot dogs and Oreos diet, believe it or not.
(As a side note, I've never consciously dieted - at most, I watch what I eat for a bit, and it has a huge effect - I seem to gain and lose weight really easy without trying one way or another.)

Lol, if thats what it takes...

I think I'd like to try and find somehting a little LESS destructive.

I joined a gym, trying to get settled in my shcedule so I cane make it there 3-4 times a week.

Cut back on soda and fast food. But not sure what else to look for...

I also don't want to lose weight but not be healthy, if that makes sense...

Hehe, that worked for me too, when my ex left me I lost 15 lbs. in one month, and I was already skinny..

Manu, which gym did ya join? What you are doing is great! Working out and cutting out sodas and fast food Is probably the best thing to do to lose weight. Of course you can always lower you caloric intake for the day, It's a pain in the ass but it really helps to keep track of everything to write down how many calories you consume every meal/snack..

I joined 24 hour fitness, one near home and one near work, so it works out well.

Hard to do abolsute calorie monitoring. For breakfas and lunch not a problem, but dinner is often some indian food my mom made, hard to get an exact calorie count, but she makes everythign way low fat as possible...

So we will see how things go...

I don't know if anyone mentioned it but incorporate some aerobic activity each day in addition to the weight training. I try to do 2 mile (slow) run a day or some alternative such as kayaking, or rollerblading. I rarely ride the bicycle on anymore because of the streets are too dangerous.

Do what I did, get sick... Just kidding.
You dont want what I had. Im still having effects from it. And its really wierd, but since I became sick, I have gotten these "nervous" spells. Its strange to say the least. Maybe its because when I first got sick, when I didnt know what was wrong with me, I was stressing out MAJORLY.
Aerobic exercise and diet. The two most important things in being healthy.
I have quit junk food, pop, and am still exercising constantly. Im in much better shape than I was a few months ago although my stomach still has a funny feeling in it.
Im going to go back to the doctor and maybe get started on the better more expensive regimine of drugs.
Anyways, didnt mean to ramble, aerobic exercise and diet.

Anyone recommened what type fo weights I should work with? I know increased muscle mass is important, as that increases your metabolism, but any specific suggestions?

Well...really, you don't want to spend more than an in the gym at a time...so really, you could to this if you wanted http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif

seriously though...no matter what you do, 45 min to an hour is about where you want to quit at. Hour and 15 tops....

Stick with free weights, and more compound movements...this will bring into play alot of secondary muscles that machines will not allow you to build.

Now that I quit smoking, the gym is next and I'll probably do something along the lines of this.....this is an old routine that I had good results with...

Monday:
Chest, Inclined bench, flat bench, dips
Back, Pull ups, Seated rows, stiff arm pull downs
Biceps, Barbell curls, dumb bell curl...or cable curl (with both bottom pulleys standing in the middle of the cable machine

Tuesday:
Legs, leg press, pyramiding up in weight, leg extension, and calf work

Wed:
Off

Thurs:
Shoulders, Clean and jerk, side/front/back lateral raises, Shrugs (front and back) with upright rows.
Triceps, nose breakers, french press, triceps push down

Friday:
Legs, Squats (pyramiding up), leg curls, calf work.

This was the routine that I got the best results out of.....
Bench was in 325 (after a work out)
I could do seated military press with 90 lb dumbbells
I could squat in the 300s as well (legs have never been a strong point)....

When I get back to the gym, I plan on doing the same thing....
I generally keep my reps between 6-10 and go as heavy as I can. I rest about 2 min between sets, and use a spotter on the heavier lifts (especially bench, squats)...I have jacked myself up a few good times when not using a spotter. (dropped a dumbbell on my nuts, and got stuck on the bottom of a squat before, pulled a peck muscle and back before....so just be careful (or smart I should say)

Manu,
Keep in mind that this routine worked for me....but it may not be ideal for you. Like the legs part of this may be too much for you. Your legs may not need as much to grow and you would be in fact over working them. Me on the other hand...unless I beat the hell out of them, my legs will do nothing.

Also, you have to remember your intensity will play a big factor. You can to lift weights doing the exact same motions that I do/did, but if you half ass do it....you will get half ass results.

Damn....I'm actually starting to want to work out again....hehe....I like this topic.... http://discussanything.com/Ubb/biggrin.gif

hehe, thanks for the post jester, good stuff.

I think that may be a bit too hardcore for me now. Given my work/school schedule, and the desire to see my GF/friends now and again, I can only devote 3-4 hours a week to the gym.working out (this is my promise to myself, fi I have time I will do more).

I figure a lot of that I will spend doing mostly cardio stuff, to get into shape really. I am looking for more some freeweight stuff I cna do for 20-30 minutes before bed...

Cool, I love 24 hour fitness, they are everywhere now! It makes it real convenient when you travel and your gym is everywhere.

For now I'd stay away from free weights until you learn proper technique. They have some really good machines at 24 hour now too.

Exercise is the most important and best way to lose weight. Though limiting your fat intake is obviously crucial.
If you don't exercise more than 45 min at a time though, you won't lose much weight, though you will muscle up. However, you need to find a way to exercise that you actually enjoy.
If you hate it, then there's no way you're going to keep at it, it's hardly worth bothering. If team sport's your thing, you could go for that. Personally, I go to the gym about three times a week for around an hour and half a session. I prefer to exercise independently than in a team, so it suits my personality. As long as I have my discman I enjoy it.
So have a look around at different ways of exercising. Though the gym may turn out to suit you well http://discussanything.com/Ubb/smile.gif

Manu,

*Diet*
Cut the carbs , increase protien intake (1gram per 1pound body wieght), use chicken fish , lean beef and eggs.

*Wieghts*
Choose two muscles a day and hit them HARD, example...biceps and back or chest and triceps. Make sure and hit each muscle at LEAST once a week.

*Cardio*
2-3 times a week for 30 min. Basketball, jogging or punching bag. Tip: choose a sport that you enjoy, this will make you a 100% more likely to follow your routine.

uh....that on top of ANY weight training, one, over shoots his time limits (big time)....and two, is a great recipe for over training for anyone who has a job and/or life our side of these activities....

Yeah cardio is pretty worthless unless you want to spend hours running around, you need to build muscle mass which burns calories continuously the best way to do that: free weights.

Cardio provides exercise for the heart, which is a muscle, which provides many benfits, especially as you age.
Its not worthless at all.
Exercise the heart for 20 minutes at least 2-3 X a week.

Not for a beginner, using free weights without knowing proper technique and posture can lead to injuries. Unless Manu knows these things or has a trainer machines are just fine.

Manu: Have you lifted before or will this be your first time?

First time lifting...

Also I am at a point where just exercise in general will be building some muscle mass...

Well....depending on your time constraints (as Manu has stated he has), you can actually make your free weight workout some what of a cardio work out as well...
Just limit your rest time to 30 seconds between sets....and you WILL work the heart as at the same time... Obviously you will not be able to lift as much....but if you cycle this on for 6 weeks...then slow down the rest time for three...you will get your cardio
Not for a beginner, using free weights without knowing proper technique and posture can lead to injuries. Unless Manu knows these things or has a trainer machines are just fine.
YES!... As me how may times I have pulled my back...or pulled a pec muscle (that HURT). If you have never used free weights or worked out before, PLEASE learn and use proper form!!! You don't know how bad I cringe when I see some young guy doing bench press with his ass off the bench....
First time lifting...
Also I am at a point where just exercise in general will be building some muscle mass...
OK...here are some tips...
Bench press (incline, flat, declined)
KEEP your ass on the bench!!! You want to pull a back muscle or throw yourself off balance...pop your ass up for assistance.
When you perform the movement...breath...don't hold your breath....in on the down motion, out on the upwards motion...
Also, when you are doing the Bench....try to act like you are pinching your shoulders back together...this will keep you in proper form.

Lat pull downs. Don't get to rocking back and fourth too much... just get a little lean back so you can pull the bar to your chest....but better yet, do pull-ups and this will take care of the problem all together.
On the majority of the exercises, if you keep your back FLAT, you will be good to go....if you start to lose form....DROP the weight DOWN...if you can't move the weight in proper form...DON'T DO IT!
Squats...You MUST keep your back flat on this one, or you are setting yourself up for injury at the very least. And if you knees are anything lime mine....just don't go any lower then parallel with the tops of your legs and keep your black flat and you'll be fine....
Invest in a good weight lifting belt... Don't waist money on a 4 inch belt...go ahead and get a 6 inch belt...you would be shocked how much more support the two inches will give you.
Also, don't invest in Gloves...get two pieces of sponge and just put them in your palms. May look cheap...but the will work just as well and cost you a buck or two compared to $20 for a pair of gloves.

I know some of this may not be clear...but ya know if you have any questions...just post them http://discussanything.com/Ubb/biggrin.gif

Hey, Manu, my suggestion is find a rowing club, if you can.

This is, of course, assuming the sport is similar in the US.

Basically, you'll be given a mixed program, lots of cardio, diet, some weights - and get taught technique - and actually row, which is damn fun.

Also, if you can't do this, check out your gym for an Ergometer (rowing machine). If it has a Concept 2, or 1 I guess, erg then you're set. Ergs are a great machine, as they're basically a cardio machine, with adjustable resistance. On 10 you get a hardcore muscle workout, on 1 purely cardio.

It's the best machine in the gym. Hell, I quit mine after theirs broke.

BUT, if you're gonna use it, its important you know the orrect posture and technique, as otherwise it can **** your back, or just do nothing.

I'm a member of 24 hour fitness and really like the programs they have there. When I became a member, I signed up for their 24/5 program which gave me several sessions with a personal trainer and a diet that was catered to my tastes. Diets are never fun, but at least they worked with what I liked. And I still do the different exercises that my trainer gave me even though I'm not enrolled in the program anymore. It's kind of expensive, but if you can afford it, go for it. It really worked for me.
