Aphasia 08-21-2001, 01:41 AM I'm a student, mostly - studio art major, minor in sociology. I'm also a sales-type person at a tiny store specializing in southwestern and spiritual stuff (everything from clothes to jewelry to crafts to home furnishings - mirrors, chairs, tables, sculptures, you name it...lots and lots of Mexican Catholic stuff). As of tomorrow morning, I'm doing some temping, too - just stupid stuff, data entry and whatnot all week. Last summer, I was a Project Coordinator for the PA Dept of Health, so I'm basically going to be doing the crap I did last summer in my spare time. It sucks, but I need the money for books.

Demeter 08-21-2001, 01:48 AM I'm a secretary...a schmuck, basically. I'm the lowest on the totem pole at my office. I have lots of responsibility without a DROP of authority. If I got paid better, I probably would mind being the doormat around here. But as it stands...I have shoe prints all over my back.

Powerboss 08-21-2001, 04:40 AM Self Employed here. I have a parking lot sweeping company here in Phoenix. It isnt glamerous but it was a good opportunity and the money aint so bad. My goal is to build it so I have several working for me.
5 Years and still growing.
I did the shirt and tie thing for 10 years, had bosses, got others rich, you know all that BS. When this presented itself to me I picked up and moved here to Phoenix from Pittsburgh Pa.
No regrets, the beginning was rough, hate the summer here though.

Succubus 08-21-2001, 06:08 PM I'm a student in college and if you mean what do i "do" in terms of making money, well not much. At college i repair old maps in the history department, make just above minimum wage, and work whenever i want to. Right before i go back to school in early sept, i'm working on another one of my dad's films as a PA (production assistant- it's a bitch job but fun). It's low budget but totally a great experience- i think the film industry can be wonderful, if you're working, that is. It also depends upon what kinds of people you're working with; everyone's interesting but there's a handful of *******s and powerhungry meanies thrown in i would say. All of my personal encounters (limited as they are) have been really positive.
I'm a romance language/lit major and hopefully will minor in studio art but we'll see. I just want tools to travel the world with and take beautiful pictures along the way!

I am an Airport Operations Supervisor at New Orleans Int. Airport. It is a medium hub airport. We are Airport Management representatives, basically. We have 2 people each shift, one works airside, one landside. Airside rides around in a Durango and does things like airfield inspections etc. We get to respond to Alerts, like when a plane comes in on 1 eng etc. and crashes. We are basically involved in anything and everything.
Landside works in the terminal. Responds to complaints from the tenants (airlines) and slip and falls etc.
We do reports and logs.
I am on the night shift now and not much goes on.. I spend most of my time in front of the puter or snoozing in the Durango listening to Art Bell!
I love this job!

Bill: I think you mean suit and tie. http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif I also did that shit as an accountant and it was okay. To be honest, accounting blows chucks. And working with taxation? There is not many other subject that can get me so disgusted. Working with numbers ultimately is ****ing boring with no freedom.
How did the business opportunity emerge in Phoenix? I am looking for ideas to head West. Every spring, I swear I won't spend another winter in the Northeast.
If I win the powerball lottery, I will buy into FM radio stations. There I will become a host to blow away the goofy morons who are obsessed with anal jokes that are so common on FM radio with my dark humorous commentary on current events, and play the best available music that is not programmed from a centralized marketing company. Of course some of you could become special guests on my show from time to time for different points of view. http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif
Example of a typical telephone interview on the imaginary radio show....
Snout: Today's guest is Ian. Ian is a remarkable and controversial presence on the internet. Ian, how are you today? Are you keeping out of trouble?
Ian: Yeah yeah, fine, whatever. My hand still hurts. Enough with the perfucuary bullshit. When are you going to admit Hillary is a great Senator?
Snout: I despise Hillary! Well, we are running out of time for today. By the way, get off my phone you left wing maniac! And don't violate the once a week call rule. You are welcome to call back next week.

Powerboss 08-22-2001, 06:26 AM Nice Interview....LOL.
Well, the idea came about as my mother had been living here since 1988 or so. BTW, were talking 96 here, as a matter of factly is was election day 96, I remember passing into AZ with the Ryder and they announced on the Radio Clinton had won re-election. What a terrible welcome.
Anyways, back to the story, Her next door neighbor was doing it, and he was always telling Bob (Stepdad) that he should get into it. Well Bobs well established in his carrer and is only several years away from retiring so theres really no point in him doing it.
My mom knew I was very unhappy with my job, and she just kinda brought it up to me one day. So, I looked into it, called the neighbor of my moms and talked to him for a couple of hours about it. He said there was plenty of business to go around in Phoenix, especially as it is growing so fast.
It didnt take me very long to reach my conclusion...so I took a gamble and it paid off. The first 2 years were rough, we racked up some debt just to survive, but then some decent money started coming in.
And now, it is growing. Still nowhere that I envision or as fast but at least we are managing and my wife can afford not to work, to take care of the little girl and soon to be son.
Anyhoo, I dont know if you've seen my Avatar on Stangnet but that is the sweeper.
Its called a Power Sweeper. It is not the kind you see in shopping malls, they only have vaccuums. My machine has a broom that runs the width of the machine and a vaccuum. It also has a broom that goes along curbs.
My machine will pick up rocks, heavy brush, glass you know stuff with substance. The ones in the mall (air sweepers) are only for fast litter patrol and cant pick up the heavy stuff.
My machine gets towed around on a trailer from place to place. I bought a new F250 last Aug and a new sweeper last Oct. Between payments and insurance and brooms and stuff...Yeowch!
So, I dont do shopping malls. I do strip plazas, churches, bars, office bldgs, smaller stuff. I have once a week stuff, 2X a week, 1 a month ect ect ect.
Like I stated earlier, its a major bitch in the summer when its 95 degrees at midnight and day stuff in the summer is awful.
The hours are weird, Im a night owl anyways, as I start work around 8:30 pm and finish whenever Im done..that varies.
Also, the downpoints...EVERYTHING is on your shoulders and when you get sick like I have been ALL F-N summer , its good to have friends, like my moms neighbor, to help out.
Although he didnt do my work for free you know...I did have to pay him.. So that meant I didnt get paid.
Fortunately, most of my customers were understanding about it.
No paid vacations ect ect ect.
But, I set my hours and I can schedule around family things and my wifes schedule, if she ever feels like working, and tell whoever I want to F off without fear of some boss telling me Ive got to take idiots who dont know what theyre talking about berate me.
Well, thats about it, if you EVER have anymore questions feel free.
Hopefully, in several years, I will have a few crews, and have a summer home in Colorado or somewhere more bearable.
Some people handle the summer heat here fine, I hate it. The other 9 months are just LOVELY though. Even the winters in the west like Co or Ut are better, you get the sun and blue sky and dont freeze to death like out east and the skiing is SUPERIOR!
Sorry for the length of this post.

I miss all the green out east.

Aphasia 08-23-2001, 12:12 AM Yuck - I'm in Pennsylvania this month, and trust me when I say, it's just as brown here as it is in Arizona (my dad lives in Phoenix, so I know). The grass here is all dead and nasty, and it's *humid*. I really hate this state...

Step away from the pipe! I just got back from there and its VERY green where I was. The east/mid atlantic has had a very mild wet summer this year!!! Hell VA is about the same as PA only hotter and I havent had to water my grass but 2-3 times this year. WTF? PA IS one of the prettiest states in the US! Sure its poor and has some backwoods feel to it but the people are salt of the earth. One day you will come to apriciate what you had. Socal is as artificial as is gets, right down to the boobs http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif (boobs could the the metephor to describe LA, fake and sex centric)I have lived in 6 states in every corner of the US and traveled through 44 states many times. Pitt has more trees and more bridges than any other city BTW.
When I lived in CA I never realized how much I missed green. Yeah there were some palm trees and artificial looking lawns. When I came back east, the grass was growing through every little crack in the sidewalk. I noticed life everywhere like never before. It felt like home.

Powerboss 08-23-2001, 03:59 PM Maybe its because she is near Three Mile Island and the radiation is getting to the land and her!
Yeah, I agree Ian, sure you get some brown lawns but just look at the trees all the forests and vegitation and stuff. its awesome.
Sure Pa has some country bumpkins, but so does every state.

Aphasia 08-24-2001, 12:10 AM No, I'm not *that* close to TMI - it's a ways down the road.
I live on the edge of the woods, at the foot of a mountain (the mountain actually starts in my next door neighbor's back yard). Yeah, I get to see the green trees, and then the bright red and orange ones in the fall...but, to be quite honest, I don't miss it, even having spent 10 months out of the last year in California. I miss thunderstorms, I'd like to see the trees changing for one day a year, and it's a damn shame what the smog does to seeing stars at night in CA...but, other than that, I don't even think about it. The whole state of California is hooked up to some giant sprinkler system, apparently, because they've always got gorgeous green grass, as far as I've seen, whereas, even with my stepdad putting in about 10 hours a week during the summer, our lawn enjoys a *very* short healthy season, before it turns brown and is taken over by Japanese beetles.
