ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (Reuters) - In trying to unravel a mystery that may involve the war of the worlds, cable TV's SCI FI Channel has turned to a group of educated men and women with shovels and set them loose on the southern New Mexico desert.
In an effort to verify once and for all whether a UFO crash-landed in New Mexico more than 50 years ago, the cable TV channel sent a team of archeologists to conduct an in-depth study of the legendary crash site.
And just like the alleged government conspiracy by those who say aliens landed near Roswell, New Mexico, the results of the scientific study are top secret. That is until Nov. 22, when SCI FI airs "The Roswell Crash: Startling New Evidence," which will include what network representatives are calling a "smoking gun."
Until then believers and debunkers will just have to wait, said Bill Doleman, the principal investigator with the University of New Mexico archeology team.
Doleman, along with three other archeologists and six volunteers were hired by the SCI FI Channel to conduct the research, which took place over 10 days last September.
"We found things -- some things I still don't know what they are -- but they surprised me," Doleman said, reiterating his confidentiality agreement with SCI FI.
SCI FI representatives say the program promises never- before-seen eyewitness interviews, late-breaking revelations and a "smoking gun bombshell," which does not necessarily coincide with the archeological findings.
"The smoking gun is fascinating and compelling. It's going to raise a lot of questions afterwards," said Thomas Vitale, a senior vice president of programming at the SCI FI Channel.
The supposed crash of an alien ship in Roswell on July 3, 1947 has become legendary. According to some accounts, the ship crashed in an empty field with several aliens on board. Witnesses claim to have seen extraterrestrial beings, which were taken away by military personnel never to be seen again.
Those who believe an alien craft landed are adamant the incident involves a huge government cover-up. The government, in turn, says the incident involved a weather balloon and the accounts of aliens comes from anti-military conspirators.
Doleman says his team was directed to use purely scientific methods, such as geophysical prospecting and archeological testing of anomalies, to find any evidence of a crash.
They primarily investigated what is called the "skip site," the second site of impact where the craft supposedly spewed debris before skipping 17-25 miles away to its final crash site.
"We weren't out there to bunk or debunk. We were just scientists using scientific methods," he said.
Along with evidence found at the scene, the "smoking gun evidence sheds light on government truthfulness about this whole event," Vitale said.
RedLine99 11-16-2002, 11:01 PM How would anyone know about the "skip site"? Considering the technology of the time wouldn't this alone be evidence that it wasn't a "weather baloon"?
buggy 11-17-2002, 12:01 AM Why is it top secret? Most Americans are so complacent, they wouldn't really understand the awesome-ness of such findings.
Weird.
Sometimes I wonder if the government just digs on feeding to our fanatical theories as to whether we are alone or we have been visited...
RedLine99 11-17-2002, 12:05 AM I've read a bit and watched alot of shows. Not once did anyone mention a "skip". Seems possible to me, but 17-25 miles? We barely had helicopters then. I would think someone would have brought this up before.
even if they DO find something, I am sure the Govt would hide it from the public, SOMEHOW!
:(

Good to see you back...:)
I guess they want to get the ratings up?
Anyway, I know what I'm gonna be doing on the night of November 22nd. I can't wait, it better be good!!!
RedLine99 11-17-2002, 12:35 AM There are two, possibly three sites involved with the crash at Roswell. First is the debris field. Thirty miles to the southeast where the remains of the craft and crew were located is the second. A few miles to the northwest of the debris site was apparently a touchdown point of baked soil and fused sand which was first seen by Chaves County deputies and then by Lewis R. Rickett and Dr. Lincoln LaPaz. How is it possible that a balloon and array train could be responsible for sites such as these?
There's some good stuff on this page:

I guess it would have to be traveling at speeds only a UFO would be capable of.
I've seen video of something like this skipping after hitting the ground. It didn't look like it was traveling that fast but it still must have traveled a mile or two after hitting the first time..

Wow, that's some interesting stuff, I've been to that site but not that page.
I find this the most telling >>>
What type of balloon and instrument package could scatter debris over an area three-quarters of a mile long and create a 500-foot long/10-foot wide gouge in the tough high desert country of New Mexico which consists of little topsoil and mostly shale and slate stone?
I'll tell you what kind...
RedLine99 11-17-2002, 01:14 AM Yeah, there are some really good questions asked on that page. I found some of the other "kept secrets" a good argument too. I won't get to see the show, but I bet they find alot of "fused" material from the heat of the impacts.
I've always thought it could possibly be a crashed jet (since the radars claim to have been tracking a UFO in the area for 4 days), but if it was something as simple as that why still hide it? It was also preferable in the early jet age for pilots to be less than 5'8", so that might have explained the "small people" thing.
I can only think of two logical explanations as to why the government hasn't come clean.
1) It would confirm life exists beyond Earth and collapse the religious foundation western civilization is based on.
2) WE ARE STILL IN CONTACT WITH THEM!
Monster 11-17-2002, 01:20 PM Or the government was assimilated by the aliens, who wish to cover up their existence among us....
Personally, I don't see why any alien life forms would want anything to do with us. Many people have the instinctual reacton of "KILL IT!!!"
Quit that, and maybe we'll see some progress.

I think it's a combination of 1 and 2..

Well alot of us are still living in the dark ages, but I don't think any Earthlings would have much luck taking out Aliens..

What I'm wondering is what if their "smoking gun" is the real thing?? Do we celebrate??:D
Corporate Avenger 11-22-2002, 06:23 AM Remember people... Tonight at 8pm...
Keep your fingers crossed...
buggy 11-22-2002, 08:11 PM Alright folks! Remember to set your dial to the Sci Fi channel. :) I am recording it... I will watch it later tonight. :)
Monster 11-22-2002, 08:50 PM My roommate took the TV!!! Is anybody who lives in LA recording it that I could borrow a copy from?
Corporate Avenger 11-22-2002, 09:58 PM It's going to be again tonight at 11 and Monday at 5pm..
I can't tape it cause I'm missing a wire for my VCR..
buggy 11-23-2002, 05:41 AM Wow. The smoking gun was interesting. With our ability (civlian ability) to get our hands on 'neat trinkets', how could they lie and say it wasn't readable?
I'm really curious to know what the scientists find in the soil samples. The signs of the terrain being disturbed by a great force was pretty damn cool.
Ok, I just watched, I need to get to bed! :)
Cristina-
Corporate Avenger 11-23-2002, 07:35 AM Yea well that's the feds for ya, remember they still claim Oswald shot Kennedy so you can never trust them.
Wasn't the smoking gun I was hoping for but it's a pretty good piece of evidence that it was indeed a craft from outer space somewhere. I just wish these Aliens would come down and party with us or something.
I can't wait to see what they find in those soil samples either.
What really pisses me off though is the fact the government has withheld the truth from us when they have no right to. We have the right to know about this, Period. Everybody in the world deserves to know about something of this importance..
Monster 11-23-2002, 04:16 PM In the defense of the gov't, too many people would panic and/or take up arms if they saw something like this coming down outta the sky. People like us, we'd be cool with it. Cautious, I daresay, but cool.
Or, as I said, maybe the gov't is covering it up because the heads of gov't are really the aliens themselves...
Redfield 11-24-2002, 01:30 PM I missed it! I was out shopping with the family! Argh!
It sounds like I missed a pretty good show.
RedLine99 11-24-2002, 01:40 PM I don't have cable so somebody please post some details?
Another thought might be that society is just now reaching the level "that we could handle it". You'd think these guys have been taking soil sample for years.
