Sega is at it again, making games to please the gamer. A long time ago, when there were 8-bit and 16-bit side-scroller games out for the earlier consoles, a game by the name of Shinobi hit the shelves with its excellent ninja style of game play that swept the floors. There were long Katanas slashing victims up, throwing shurikens across the screen hoping to hit the target, and countless amounts of fun. Shinobi has been resurrected and currently in development for the PlayStation 2. Shinobi might be in 3D graphics but some say it still holds true to its original roots.

Well yes, there is a nice 3D environment with superb graphics, but how it stays true to its roots is simple. If you can still remember the old side-scrolling ways, you have different levels such as 1-A, 1-B, and so on with different enemies and bosses. Well Sega is making the game just like that. Having each level like the old days with a boss at the end, but making it looks ten times better. If you can also remember falling down many pits and dying, its back! Your character can fall through bottomless pits and die! Of course like the old days you will start the level over and try again. To my vast knowledge of action games like this, I haven't found too many games, and even if one game that has this feature. Though the bad thing is…there I no save point so you will need to clear it the first time through.

Hotsuma, the main character, has a lot of ninja abilities to get you through the game from beginning to the end. Features like the stealth dash, climbing on walls, and more typical ninja abilities. Also he has the ability to run on walls…sounds like a familiar ability on Devil May Cry 2. Though running on walls can get difficult judging where you can do it, when you need to jump, and when you need to do a certain ability called the double jump or the air dash.

Battles can vary from easy 2 to 3 enemies, to harder groups of 5 to 6. Sega plans to put you to the test with battles that will absolutely kick your ass. Using your sword and shurikens, you will fight diverse enemies that will block attacks, attack you, and maybe even kill you. Ninja magic will help you through your battles. Items like the magic scroll can release powerful energy waves of lightning or fire to give those enemies a nice smack in the face. Also, level designs have been said to be humongous with a wide range of obstacles to conquer.

The scarf does nothing but distract the enemies and makes Hotsuma look cool. Though you would think the scarf could choke someone but apparently not. Controlling Hotsuma is simple. Simply use the left analog stick to maneuver him, and the right stick to adjust camera angles. The rest of the buttons let you dash, jump, strike your sword, and throw a shuriken.

Without story line information released from Sega yet, it makes me wonder if the game play is just going to be the main factor of the game. With Capcom's recent samurai style release, Onimusha 2, it just didn't fill up the samurai style expectations. Shinobi on the other hand might. With its wide variety of attacks, maneuvers, and huge explorable areas, Shinobi might be the game the PlayStation 2 has been waiting for. There hasn't been an official release date set yet for the game, but stay in touch with AllRPG for more information on Sega's upcoming ninja game, Shinobi.
