Starting on Oct 8 Princess started a Photography Competition (http://www.discussanything.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15817). This thread contains the information on how to help vote for the winner.

For those of you who submitted photos, but did not choose the 2 you wanted in the vote I have automatically selected the first two submissions you made.

First some notes on what you should consider when you evaluate a photo:

Do NOT include the Resolution or Size of the photo (just because the photo is smaller doesn't reduce its score)
Do NOT include symbolism or scene setup not specified by the author (don't reduce a score because you think the shot should have been to the left by 5 inches, etc.)
DO include the creativity of photo (originality, etc.)
DO include the technicality of the photo (difficulty & quality, e.g.)
DO include your emotions (you just plain like it!)

As in only one person sent in a ballot?

I think the main problem is, not all of us HAVE Excel... we can't use the ballot.

I guess thats the issue. But still I would expect 90%+ of the MS user environment to have Excel. Looks like Im going to redo the ballot to make it more 'user' friendly.

It balances the votes so that people don't vote all 10s (nor all 1s) for everyone. ;)

On 2 occasions I have tried to enter my votes, and excel has froze up on me while trying to copy the txt URL.

Any clues?

Any other ideas, since this seems to be causing some problems.

I guess everyone just put this on PAUSE while I come with something easier/faster/better

Yeah well this was a learning experience. I wanted to have something automated, hence the excel file, but that didn't work. This was the second best I could come up with at the time.

In the future I could create a web-form that allows you to pick a score and the hit submit to cast your vote. Making it easy as pie

A suggestion, for the future.

Maybe we should not have people vote on EVERYONE. We should have people maybe score their 5 favorite?

When dealing with a lot of entries (more than 3-5) I think that is not a good idea. There were alot of photos in this competition that I liked ALOT and it is too difficult to like one better then the other and try to compare/contrast each photo against 15+ competitors. Plus your comparing the photos against each other, and that can taint/distort your opinion of the photo and blur the criteria you use to try and evaluate it.

Its alot easier to rate the photos on a scale (like hotornot.com etc.) plus you are atleast attempting to evaluate each photo with a 'clean slate' and against a level criteria.

The problem here was this was just too complicated. It needs to be easier to vote, hence the web-form idea or something similar.

I agree with your reasoning, but I 'avoided' voting for so long cause it took so long to vote :)

If we could get a 'hotornot' liek script, then I'd agree with your assessment.

But I guess also, for future contests, we need to have some...category or something, to narrow it down more.

Also, I would like to thank everyone who participated. Although the voting was a little confusing and took some time to iron out, I think the next contest will run smoother.
