"TITLE GOES HERE"
Devon leaned forward, resting her elbows on the tablecloth. She eyed her date suspiciously. Could she have heard him correctly? She must have. He had just told her that she was exactly what he was looking for. He interrupted her train of thought.
"So....how does that sound?"
"Hmmm?" She mumbled, still swimming in the pools of his gray-blue eyes.
"I know it's a lot to take in, but I think we should just jump in and decide if we want to go for this or not."
Her eyebrows raised as she opened her eyes a little wider. "I...umm..yeah.. I...Let's go for it. We definitely should...go for it." Having said that, a grin creeped into her cheeks and spread across her face.
"I'm so glad you want to go ahead with this. I mean, last time I began such a risky endeavor..."
She cut him off. "Oh, of course it's risky, but..how can we ever get anywhere if we don't put ourselves out there sometimes?"
"Yeah, you got that right. It's just hard sometimes knowing what the risk is of getting hurt and all..."
"I know that all too well." She nodded and took another sip of her martini, thinking briefly of going into a story of a badly ended relationship, and quickly deciding against it.
"Well I'm optimistic this time. I mean, with the advances I've made with my equipment..."
She nodded as a reflex and then fully absorbed the comment mid-sip. Half-choking she spoke, "Excuse me?"
"Well...normally I wouldn't even bring the conversation to that level. You know, some things just have to be seen to be believed, if you know what I mean."
Hearing this, her pulse quickened. Her friend who'd set up the date said he moved pretty fast, but this was ridiculous. It was a bit excessive, she decided, but maybe this not so subtle approach to flirting was just what she needed to jump-start her love life. She contemplated a remark about his "equipment" when he interceded.
"But I guess we can make arrangements for you to see it for yourself tomorrow."
"Tomorrow? Isn't that a bit...soon?"
"Well, if you're not ready, I guess I could just get someone else. I mean, I can't get the results I need by myself. And when you're ready, you can just join in when you feel more prepared."
"Wow. I ..Look... I appreciate your...enthusiasm, but I think it's time to end this. I'm sorry, I just think it's too soon for us. No matter how advanced your "equipment" is. "
He looked puzzled at the air quotes and the way she spoke of his equipment. Not quite knowing how to respond to the situation, he shook her hand.
"Well, I appreciate your being upfront about all of this. I don't mean to be brash or anything, but I just need to add that I'm a bit disappointed that a woman of your caliber wouldn't be jumping at this opportunity."
"Hey buddy. I'm not the one who tried to whip out my equipment in front of someone I just met!" She hissed and tossed the remaining half of her drink on his crisp white shirt.
Taken aback, he rose with as much grace as a man wearing a stained suit can muster and went to retrieve his coat.
Devon sat back in her seat and took a deep breath. Her friend Judy, who worked at the bar left the half-drunken customers to see how the date had gone.
"Devon?" She asked.
"It's okay. I know what you're gonna say, but there will be others."
"I know you're probably trying to be optimistic here...but umm."
"Oh come on. I'm only 23 years old-- I think I still have a few good years left!"
Now Judy looked confused.
"Devon. I... I thought this was what you wanted."
"Yeah, well. I thought it was too, but Jesus, Judy, he was getting ready to show me his equipment!"
"Oh my God! After your first meeting?"
"See...now do you know why I turned him down?"
"Holy crap, girl! Look, I don't always understand the decisions you make, but I can't believe you let him slip away without at least taking a look at it."
Devon didn't know how to respond to that. Judy continued.
"Look. I know you must be disappointed right now, but you should really start thinking about what you're gonna do."
"I appreciate your concern Jude, I really do, but I just..." Devon's voice trailed off as she pulled a small organizer out of her purse. She continued, "Oh, shoot. I forgot that I have a business meeting tomorrow. Great. All I need right now."
"I can't believe you're worried about another meeting right now. You should be figuring out how you're going to salvage the future of your career."
"Oh don't worry Jude. I'm meeting with Professor Wilkey tomorrow, we're supposed to figure out if I'm right for his project. I really hope I am though, I hear he has some great ....equipment. OH MY GOD! Judy! I just threw a martini at the head of the research department!"
"Yeah, hon. I know. Jeez, maybe we can find you a job back in the office or something. How many words can you type per minute?"
"OH MY GOD, Jude! I thought he was my date. Oh my..."
Judy snatched the organizer. Her friend had switched the days around. Under Friday she had written, "Meet with Professor" next to Saturday's "Blind Date."
"You thought that Professor Wilkey was your blind date?" She couldn't stop laughing.
A tall man in a suit came into the restaurant. He approached the maitree'd.
"Hello, my name is Albert Wilkey and I'm here for a business meeting with a graduate student."
Judy and Devon watched the maitree'd escort the man to a table for two.
"Wait," Judy ventured. "If Professor Wilkey just got here, who the hell did you just have dinner with?"
"I don't know," Devon said," But I'm glad I didn't agree to take a look at his equipment."
