used to play Warhammer for quite a long time.

I played Empire.

but i slowly got out of that phase....plus it was costing an arm and a leg...and i had better places to place the money.

I used to be into modern armor miniatures a few years ago. Fortuneately I had a friend who was willing to buy all the miniatures, otherwise it can rapidly turn into a very expensive hobby!

I have played Warhammer 40K and a few other GW games. I never got BIG into any of them though. But they are fun, just costly...

Yeah, I hear you guys about the money, but I've often heard that same argument from guys who play MAGIC and whatnot . . . of course, they have $1500 worth of CARD in their briefcase, but that's different! LOL!

Actually, GW has revised all the 40k rules to help players start more inexpensively. It SORTA' helped because they're making a lot of boxed plastic sets that are a BIT cheaper. On the other hand, they toned down characters quite a bit and now have REQUIRED troop types, so you end up needing far more figs.

The jury is still out for me on the new rules. I mean, some of the revisions are great, but some are kinda' silly. I THINK they dumbed everything down so kids could play, but they took a LOT of the flavor out. Everything now is WAY too generic for my tastes even though making custom figures is a LOT more interesting since a weapons is basically a weapon i.e. you just have power weapon . . . that could be a sword, maul, axe, lance, whatever.

Have any of you guys played the new system?

Pat, that's sort of like Fantasy Necromunda, right? I've heard it's pretty cool.

The new rules are okay . . . I'm afraid they're going to repeat some past mistakes and keep making each army stronger than the previous one with the release of each Codex. I think that's what happened the last time. Each Codex had some monsterous character that was even better than the last army's until, eventually, there were some 200-300 points super-creatures out there.

I always thought it was funny when people used to call the Wolves "unfair", and "character heavy". There weren't any Wolf characters that even came CLOSE to most of the Chaos guys (for the same points) or some of the Angels. It was pretty silly.

I used to play 40k, but sorta grew out of it, and...uh....realized it was a waste of cash.

I liked the new rules, as I found the old rules too slow in combat, fun to use, but slow...

The problem is that hand to hand is now way to powerful. My Blood Angel Army - 40 Assault Marines, basically, just charges across the table and...the game is won, in a cloud of gibs and gore.

The orks got screwed because they don't have much armor and got bopped down to a 2 for BS. Basically, they don't hit squat AND can't seem to take a lot of hits. Oh, but they break easily AND, if you break now, there's a GOOD chance of never coming back. The orks got screwed.

I've played with my Imp Guard against GOOD ork players with GOOD armies, and I haven't had a LOT of trouble. They just seem to die and die and die.

Hand to hand DOES seem a bit nasty. The Guard has some nasty tricks, though, and, DON'T LAUGH, the new H2H rules help them more than anyone. Putting a couple of characters with power weapons (Coms or, my favorite, Preachers!) in with a squad of ten guardsmen is pretty rough. I mean, yeah, a squad of 10 goobs isn't going to stand against 5 marines long . . . but they don't have to. Figure the marines kill 8 goobs (THAT'S unusual), then then goobs hit back with 2 s3's and then 4 or 5 power weapons. Hey, no armor saves at s6 . . . figure 3 or 4 marines die. It's a fair trade by the numbers PLUS the troops will probably stick around for another attack.

I mean, hey, it IS a numbers game, but if you go by the averages AND if you attack first, it can be done and done often. I've REALLY been surprised by how well the Guard does in H2H when outfitted and setup properly.

What REALLY helps the Marines is the armor thing. With no more negatives involved i.e. the armor either works or it doesn't, there's no good anti-marine weapon, anymore. Crap, I used to take a slew of heavy bolters against marines, but now, eh, they're just mildly annoying. Autocannons are spiffy, but there's not enough dice to make them THAT effective. Basically, when fighting marines, if a guy can carry a lascannon, he's getting one.

Oh, and the Guard got SCREWED on the Leman Russ. The Russ used to be THE tank on the field, but now that "you can fire this OR this OR this if you don't move" crap . . . blech! I'm used to the Russ coming out moving and shooting everything . . . that suckles. The AC'ed out Russ is riteous, though, and that's the one I normally play with.

The Basilisk is a WHOLE lot better now (and fairly cheap), but the Griffon still sucks ass. Oh, and it sucks that the Chimera can't fire the laser rifles, anymore.

Of course, I love the idea of shooting twice at close range . . . and that deal about shooting your own sarge to control the troops is pretty sweet http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif
