Shogun 11-01-2002, 02:40 PM What do you think is the best RPG out there or has ever been?
I LOVE these type of games!!!!! I love to stratergize. I usually end up unscaved. I don't like to loose any of my guys. I plan and get things done.
My favorite is prolly Brigandine (if you've ever heard of it).

That game r0x0rz!
But as for the best.... well...anything from the Final Fantasy Series. My personal favorite being Final Fantasy VI (III in English), Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and X were also very good.
Story - FF6, and FF7
Graphics - FF8 (Most impressive thing I ever seen on the PS1
-Æ (I always wanted a Red XIII Tattoo)
The Frog 11-01-2002, 03:00 PM I loved the FF series too.
On the SNES format, I loved the one marke FF II in the US.
On PC, I like the story best on FF 7 and the graphics from FF8 best.
Haven't played 9 or 10 since I don't own a Playstation.
DaOgre 11-01-2002, 03:48 PM Final Fantasy 2....
Best RPG Ever
TheGreatMonkey 11-01-2002, 04:52 PM I second everybodies love for the FF series. But also want to say that Morrowind rules...but I guess thats an Action RPG and doesn't really count.
Scott 11-01-2002, 09:04 PM FF 2 SNES was awesome...
the ending almost made me cry :)
Who's played Suikoden?
that was a bad ass RPG
I liked Chrono Trigger and
Chrono Cross as well

Working in 3 for the PS2 right now.
So cool, one of the best... also one of the least heard of.

DJ NoDoz 11-02-2002, 12:42 AM Personally I dig Xenogears. Man, what a deep story.
And ooohhh the Parasite Eve Series! Another good story too. I likes my games with somthing more than just hack and slash, sure you can build up your character, modify his abilitys, armor, and weaponry, but the whole young boy must save planet, gets awsome weapon, gets girl in the end has been overdone. Newer storylines must be made whole new ideas check out these two games, and you'll see what i mean.
Redfield 11-02-2002, 01:12 AM Xenogears just for the movie in the beginning. :D
AverageJoe 11-02-2002, 01:37 AM i say FF2 because as far as i can remember it was the first rpg to really have a complicated plot and characterization. most rpgs before were like morrowind, dungeons and dragons, and might and magic, where your character is a no-name guy who you have to make. FF2 was great because the characters were so defined and they even got killed off. when they died, you felt sorry for them. i remember thinking how bad it sucked that polom and porim got turned to stone holding that room open. am i a nerd or what.
jonnyofthedead 11-02-2002, 02:43 AM Morrowind, Ultima Underworld I & II, Zelda 64 (if that counts as an RPG)
ChaoticThoughts 11-02-2002, 03:11 AM Baulders gate2, Diablo1/2, arcanum, maybe theif2...
But the best for me right now is of Morrowind!

I like having diff. battle crews going on diff. missions in diff. parts of the map at the same time. Each creature is vital and must be used to the full!
Shogun 11-08-2002, 05:52 PM check it
Shogun 11-08-2002, 11:10 PM here is a pic of Cador the death knight. and Halley. they story for both is amazing.
Shogun 11-08-2002, 11:13 PM here one of the whole cast. there's Dryst in the clown suit. lionese, King cai in green, Lance in the armour, Lord Zemekis with his tempest. and Lord Vaynard with the silver hair

MyFeetsHurt 11-09-2002, 09:43 PM Final Fantasy 3 of course :P. Best RPG ever!
:stupid:
Saiya00 11-18-2002, 07:52 PM Final Fantasy all the way! Though I can't decide which one...
:D
enolA eiD 12-02-2002, 06:08 PM Final Fantasy 7 or Chrono Trigger

Yeah.... I worked as a Manager of Microplay Video Games for 2 years. I better know it.
Actually I might just go buy it.

DJ NoDoz 01-06-2003, 08:10 PM been playing Animal Crossing on the Nintendo Gamecube, and it has got to be one of the most addicting "RPGs" out there.
Its about as basic as you can get.
Move to a town
and just try to make a living.
simple yet addicting, try it when you get the chance.
Invader Pichu 02-10-2003, 05:08 PM I'd say Kingdom Hearts, Okage: Shadow King, Pokemon, and the Resident Evil series. But FF, Parasite Eve, and Panzer Dragoon Orta look great as well.
***
I tried playng Animal Crossing, but then I got bored five minutes into the game. Hehe.
MarikCraven 02-18-2003, 04:50 PM Leisure Suit Larry series. WOOT!
TheGreatMonkey 02-19-2003, 12:06 AM I've become fond of the Skies of Arcadia, ported to the Game Cube.
Fitzgerald 02-28-2003, 11:35 AM Final Fantasy VI. The huge cast of characters allowed for lots of character development, and they were all fairly interesting. Plus I happen to think the score was one of the series' best.
Shadowhawk 03-07-2003, 10:37 PM Never got into the FF series so I can't comment on it much.
Of the ones I've played, I'd say Baldur's Gate 2 was the best for character development & story line. Morrowind does run a close second though. Lots of depth to the game & TONS of quests.
Although I'd argue a little with Monkey that most of the quests having non-violent options to completing them wouldn't make it strictly an 'action' RPG, it would have been nice to see more interaction & PC/NPC development options in the game.
If I NEVER see another friggin Cliff Racer again, it'll be too soon also, LOL!
Going really old school though, I also loved the Bard's Tale series for the old Apple II PCs. Beyond primative by today's standards, but a ton of fun at the time.
thehappyheather 05-12-2003, 07:12 AM Baldur's gate 2 for a kinda lame reason: my dad plays it.
It's a GREAT game too...but im a girl...and I like being all sappy and following in my dad's footprints.:)
TheGreatMonkey 05-12-2003, 03:45 PM I never really got into baldur's gate, I keep hearing its a good, game, and I want it, meh, I don't have much time for games right now anyways...
The Frog 05-18-2003, 07:54 PM Did anyone ever play Lufia or Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals?
My wife and I got hooked on Lufia 2 and had gobs of fun playing it back in the SNES days.
The Miscreant 06-03-2003, 03:07 PM Can't beat Ultima 7 (for PC) - both parts 1 and 2 were amazing. Realistically, Ultima 7 was the Morrowind of 1992 - but much, much better story.
Bone_Vulture 06-10-2003, 09:05 AM Who cares about the irritating "rpg's" from the east? No-one has mentioned Fallout I & II!

Currently playing 2, and I just bought 3 today. I love 2 so far, so hopefully 3 maintains the quality of the series thus far.
My personal favorites of all-time are probably Final Fantasy 2/4, 7, and Xenogears. Honorable mention would be anything from the Dragon Warrior series.

Final Fantasy 3 beats out 2 only by a margin. Then there's Neverwinter Nights and perhaps the original Dragon Warrior

Fallout Enforcer (http://www.interplay.com/fbos/)
Or whatever the hell its called.... Console only... bah
Talbain 06-23-2003, 10:49 AM i'd say FF7 by far then Grandia. they are supposed to come out with remakes of FF7-9 but something happend and they got it delayed for a while. also can't wait for FFXI to come out.

TeeSeeJay 07-14-2003, 12:12 PM Japanese RPGs = Yuck.
Best RPGs
Ultima IV, V, and VII
Planescape: Torment
And I will nod enthusiastically in the direction of Fallout.
And here's to hoping that Knights of the New Republic will make the list.
sixblocks 08-20-2003, 12:29 AM ff6, xenogears, ffx, and pso eps I&II for cube, if you want to call it an rpg.
Lloyd 08-28-2003, 06:47 PM Ah, so many good ones to choose from!
Candidates include: Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Suikoden I & 2, Final Fantasy Tactics...
Hmm... I still have to say Chrono Trigger, but only barely.
As for Suikoden 3... I don't want to say much, if you guys are still playing it. But I did not like it. PM me if you want more info :P
Grizzly 09-11-2003, 03:46 PM New RPG coming out this month. :) It is based on an old D&D campaign mod, Temple of Elemental Evil. Looks good :)
http://www.greyhawkgame.com/
Tchort 12-07-2003, 10:55 AM The Baldurs Gate series. Black Isle makes perfect RPGs that stay true to the old D&D. Baldurs Gate I was full of character development and action based storyline that always had you busy and thinking about what else you had to do (I used to hear the BG theme music in my sleep I played it so much) Overall it was an upbeat game.
Baldurs Gate II was much more morbid and had a lot of storyline that based itself in the gutter population of the Forgotten Realms city of Baldurs Gate. The deaths and betrayel and overall atmosphere of this game is untouched by anything else out there.
I'd like to try the Icewind Dale series.
the Eye of the Beholder series for pc... i loved it when i was younger... but FF3 kicked ass....
Althemier 02-04-2004, 07:10 PM look its a 4 way tie between Morrowind, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Diablo 2 and Arcanum: Of Steamworks And Magick Obscura. Of course the best of all rpg's is the grandaddy of them all, pen and paper D&D baby.
I don't know 02-05-2004, 03:18 AM You use a pen?
D&D sucks ass. WoD is the ****!

hey
we're campaigning D&D right now, and our motto is : "no background, screw roleplay, long lives rules and statisitcs !!!" ... trust me or not, it's great fun: we almost don't need a GM , and we get the best of him on most contentious anyway ...
Refreshing change from my other RP sessions ...
I don't know 02-06-2004, 11:02 AM You'll love this, then :p (http://www.gamesinabox.com/munchkin.html)

jediboy 04-06-2004, 03:27 PM Even though it's been said countless times, I'm gonna go with FFVII....
Loved the Story line, FMV's and summons....
Second most is Kingdom Hearts....
Meadhands 04-27-2004, 04:45 PM I don't care what anyone says, i liked Ehrgeiz. It may not have been the best, or anything close to that, but for a dungeon crawler, it was indeed unique and refreshing.
As for actual world-exploring RPGs, nothing beats The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Not only is that sucker huge, with dozen of powerful hidden items, hundreds of caves, mines, tombs, and ruins, dozens of remote towns, several modes of transportation, a world that is preset to the inch in its miles of explorable land, with customizable spells and items, but is also has a long main quest and LITERALLY HUNDREDS of sidequests. This game has by far had the most sweat put into.
I would like to state, too, that this thread has inspired me to make a page devoted to games you should never play. Check it out please.

I don't remember Ehrgeiz how old is that one?
Meadhands 04-27-2004, 11:12 PM Its a PS 1 game. It was a fighting game that came a little after FF7 and included many characters (Cloud, Tifa, Yuffie, Vincent, Zak, Sephiroth) as a playable people. It is a very hard find nowadays, though, because after they translated it, they only made a few copies. Its a crappy fighting game, but the dungeon crawl mode is good.
h2g2Fan 04-28-2004, 08:21 AM Here it is, guys. The definitive top 5 RPGs.
5. Final Fantasy 3
4. Chrono Trigger
3. Final Fantasy
2. Lufia 2
1. Final Fantasy 2
CGord 05-15-2004, 10:57 AM Kingdom Hearts, FF X, FF X-2, am now working my way through Xenosaga.

I don't know 08-01-2004, 09:07 AM *sigh* I'll have to repeat myself:
THERE IS NO SUTCH THING AS A COMPUTER RPG
And I'll hereby throw in a new game called "Draug" as my new favorite :)

My new favourite P&P :

jonnyofthedead 08-01-2004, 03:52 PM Favourite CRPGs are Baldur's Gate, Fallout 1/2 and NWN.
Yes, I'm aware that they're more like (trashy) interactive novels than anything else, but they still rule.
If the Zelda series doesn't count, then I'd have to say Morrowind (total badass....."Mornhold, city of lights! City of magic!" ) Phantasy Star Online ep. I & II(online, though, DON'T BE A SLOW FORCE....)Oh, did I mention Earthbound? Stick with the classics, b****!
WiccanMommy 08-20-2004, 01:30 AM Morrowind III Elder Scrolls
Planescape Torment (got this game at walmart for $10 and it is by far one of my favorite games, lol it was cheap too)
BG1 and BG2
Dungeons and Dragons: Myths of Rynor
Vital Sign 08-26-2004, 02:28 AM The best RPG i've playd so far is Tales of Symphnia.
Fiesta Facelift 11-01-2004, 12:56 AM Anyone play Lunar the Siver Star, for Sega CD?
wow...that was awesome!
my favorite game of all time. Alex is the man. and the soundtrack was phenomenal.
Some other noteworthy RPGs:
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Final Fantasy VII
Golden Sun
and from what I've heard, Chrono Trigger & Secret of Mana were amazing.
Fiesta Facelift 11-01-2004, 12:58 AM oh yeah, and Skies of Arcadia!
ChaoticThoughts 12-01-2004, 06:32 AM Wow... this thread has been going for 2 years.
Anyhow, Morrowind still hold its place for me, very large world and open-ended.
Kights of the old republic is a good 2nd place, but after playing once good, and once evil, I was done with the game.
Not much has been released recently for RPGs, except for Vampire bloodlines. It will not hold up in the long run, although it has my attention atm.
Dacar92 12-02-2004, 10:57 PM My vote goes to Morrowind & Diablo 2. Both for the PC.
D2 is a 5 year old (wasn't it 1999?) game with a huge following, still. It is amazing that a 5 year old game, with graphics that can be rated as just OK, can still hold my attention. It is replayabilty that gives it my vote for the number one RPG ever.
russjman 01-11-2005, 04:24 PM I don't remember Ehrgeiz how old is that one?
Ehrgeiz was a fighting game made by Square on PSX(arcade port). No rpg elements that i know of, but i think i rented it once.
Gibson 01-11-2005, 04:29 PM Everquest 2 or WoW but Everquest 2 nudges out
dancejunkie 01-25-2005, 02:41 AM I am also a FF fan!! And a RPG nerd!
Right now I am playing Star Ocean, FFx2, FFx, Suikoden 2. I was playing Xeno Saga 2, but my game got erased, and I didn't want to start it over. And yes, I'm one that starts up another game once I get bored or stuck somewhere. But I always return to finish, sooner or later.
Sinclair 01-31-2005, 10:22 PM The best RPG's I have ever played are, in no particular order:
Fallout 1 and 2, Arcanum, Planescape: Torment, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2, Baldur's Gate (not 2).
I dislike Morrowind, as playing it felt like being in a vast mansion, but a cold one, with little in the way of character. My character felt like a tool with which to do things. This may be true, but it should not be felt. Baldur's Gate 2 is a boring "Let's go through the whole damn book of monsters", cliched, trudging, derivative assterpiece. After the fish-guys (Kuo-Toa? Can't remember), Mind Flayers, Drow, every damn elemental, etc, I was surprised they didn't break out the more obscure creatures, such as Giffs (hippos with arquebuses, not to be mistaken for Gith). I quit the game something like 2/3 of the way through and sold it. I felt like part of my life had been stolen.
And as for Final Fantasy and the like: For an RPG, you want some innovation, a sense of the new, a little bit of GOOD quirkiness, some freshness. You will not get these things in decent quantities from Japan, a culture known to a large degree for its stultifying conformism and ridiculous business-fixation, in addition to a combination of racism and yearning to be white (just watch some anime, then try to figure out how many IRL blue-eyed, blond-haired women there are with names like Yuriko Mashinabashi), and some very creepy tastes in porno.
SudruhEsO 03-15-2005, 02:27 AM morrowind was pretty easy. only thing you have to do is find a ring, a powerful soul and imbue the ring with a constant heal hp. and you are a god...
fallout was pretty cool, but there are som issuess about the next sequel. wonder, when it will be released..
WhiteWesterner 03-15-2005, 01:01 PM I can't stand RPG's, they are incredibly boring and seldom have any truly difficult objectives.
Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, was (and still is) possibly the only good RPG out there.
Von Apfelstrudel 03-16-2005, 07:31 AM it's not a rpg :|
I don't know 03-16-2005, 12:53 PM It fills all two of the requirements to be a computer rpg:
1: you're able to choose between at least two characters.
and
2: you get to munchkin your character in to a kick ass fighting machine.
anime_rules815 05-02-2005, 08:05 PM my fav rpg is tales of symphonia for gamecube, but the gloden sun series for gameboy :D
anime_rules815 05-02-2005, 08:07 PM *gloden sun series
anime_rules815 05-02-2005, 08:08 PM **golden sun. sry
Ho14:9 07-09-2005, 03:51 PM I don't know, I probably would vote FF VII. The NES had some really nice rpg's (old, but good) One of my favorites is Crystalis.
anime_rules815 07-15-2005, 08:06 PM theyre also coming out with, after 10 years, another luner game! i also want riviera, the promised land.
Bobert 09-08-2005, 08:50 PM What do you think is the best RPG out there or has ever been?
I LOVE these type of games!!!!! I love to stratergize. I usually end up unscaved. I don't like to loose any of my guys. I plan and get things done.
My favorite is prolly Brigandine (if you've ever heard of it).
Runescape. Hands-down

Don't know i'd consider that a true RPG. But it is a great game. It was the "Great Life Siphon" before WoW.
I don't know 09-09-2005, 08:22 PM Best computer RPG now would be WoW, tightly followed by morrowind (which has a better, more open and more detailed system of character development)
That would mean Project X ( or any shoot them up where you get to choose which bonus you take) was a RPG, you know ... :|- Only shoot em up I've played that was like that is Deus ex (and maybe some similar game) and yes, I consider Deus Ex a computer rpg.

Angelic_Scars 12-28-2005, 04:40 PM Blood Rayne
Devil May Cry
Katmari Damancy
Those are my top 3 for the moment, more to be coming soon I havent played much video games lately.

WoW sucks ass.
Slinky_Bass 03-23-2007, 05:59 AM Best rpg ever?
Baladurs Gate 2. No contest, that game is an RPG legend.
Followed closely by Baldurs Gate 1, Planescape Torment, FF7 & FF8.
Honourable mention:
Ultima 8 - Pagan. The first RPG I ever played and played and played, I loved it. Played it again recently and it was still just as enjoyable despite the dated graphics and midi sound.
Shadoglare 03-23-2007, 10:00 AM As far as computer RPGs the only one I ever got really hooked on was Icewind Dale.
Haven't had one really catch my attention since - still play the table games though ;)
Slinky_Bass 03-23-2007, 02:23 PM ak, Icewind Dale, if you liked that you'll really enjoy Baldurs Gate 2. *proselytize*
What table games do you play?

I play D&D, and GM a GURPS Traveller: Interstellar Wars campaign.
And occassionally play in a GURPS Powers campaign but I'm not real thrilled about that one.

I must say I absolutely loved this series. I don't know why Camelot is not thinking about making or rather haven't made another RPG.
Disembodied Freak 09-30-2007, 11:49 AM I have to say WoW cause of Graphics, the number of epople who play, creativity, and entertainment values... I've never actually played an RPG besides that that I liked. But I can't afford WoW...

The game had everything. Involving, proggressive story. Well-rounded characters. Enjoyable traditional RPG style gameplay. Characteristic dual futuristic/midieval setting. Advanced, NASA designed hydrofoils. The music was amazing (for the time) It had it all.
