View Full Version : White Wolf - Lack of Originality?
Crisco 07-06-2001, 07:44 PM As I delve into more and more White Wolf Games I can help but see the exact same story going on over and over and over again.
Said Supernatural group used to be extreamly powerful, swaying events in the world and controling it or just living with impunity. But now their F-'ed, their great power gone they wander around trying to restore themselves to their previous glory.
The only difference between Vamp and mage is the type of character you play, wither you use magic or you bite people.
But even within this, WW reuses character types. Reusing concepts for characters over and over again making the only difference between anyone in the way they use supernatural powers.
Now all in all this isnt all a bad thing. It allows anyone who has played a WW game to easily pick up another one, giving them a sence of fimiliarity.
Anyway Im rambling...Anyone have their own feelings?

D Durden 07-09-2001, 09:59 AM Well, I've been RPG'ing for 15+ years (what a waste . . . I know . . . I'm ashamed), and I find that most people (i.e. players) have the same fantasies (no, not the one about being surrounded by naked women who are throwing little pickles at your feet . . . that's just me).
Basically, in every party I've EVER been in, there have been 2 or 3 guys fighting over who's going to be the dark, "broodiest" fighter in the corner (the world is full of Conans and Wolverines). Basically, the whole "I've been wronged, and I'm out to get the sob's that did it" has been WAY overdone. I see WAY too many Punishers playing all the rpg's . . . and nothing dies like a Level 1 Vigilante. And, for a GM, nothing is more fun to kill . . .
I guess that's why I love CoC so much. It's like the WWF . . . "IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOUR NAME IS!!!" You're human and regardless of how big your sword or gun is, you can die SPLAT . . . just like that. It just takes the power gamer right out of game. I love it.
Oh, speaking of Wolf, I used to play Rage (werewolves), and, ehehehe, we had a particular character put ALL his efforts and sklls into wealth. After about 5-6 months of playing, he basically aquired enough money to form his own private army and kill the blood suckers that way. It was pretty sweet. Three or four big hungry wolves would be like "we'll have to be careful because they have sentries . . . and we don't want to alert them so we'll sneak in and . . . hey, what's that noise?"
"My choppers . . . duck . . ."
*big fireball*
"Now, where did you say those OTHER vampires were?"
He ended up buying the big company that all the werewolves hate . . . yeah, he had THAT much money! LOL! It was humorous to say the least . . . oh, Rage purists, please don't flame!
haha, oh man. he BOUGHT pentex? That seems a bit silly to me :P
Regarding a lack of originionality, I just play Vampire, so no comment :P
BUT, what you said abotu CoC is interesting Dave. I LOVE playing a mortal in the World of Darkness. You're totally oblivious to what is going on in the world around you, and so weak compared to the supernaturals...

D Durden 07-09-2001, 05:06 PM Nonononono! LOL!
They're CoC modules that emmulate B-grade horror flicks! Incredible!
D Durden 07-10-2001, 01:57 AM Hehehehe . . . the dude had billions. He took every point in some form of wealth . . . and then he just kept building and building. It WAS pretty hilarious AFTER he bought it. They spent 2 or 3 weeks exposing "corruption" and repairing the world. LOL! Sad thing was that the guy's character kept most of the corporation in place . . . just cleaned it up. No sense in wasting ALL of that money!
Yeah, see, I like the role-playing part of it. I mean, heck, ANYONE can play a blood-thirsty vamp (no offense!) or some Bruhahahaha werewolf on a mad hunt. Same goes for the berserker or other simple character.
In CoC, though, jeeeez, any human can be a hero or villian (knowingly or not). I've played scenarios where the last two people alive were an elderly professor and a psychopathic killer . . . and they saved the world (sort of). I mean, there's SO much latitude as to what can happen, and the percentile based system means there's a CHANCE you can do anything . . . sorta' like life. And, if you do it a lot, odds are, you're going to get better at it BUT, same odds say you'll NEVER be the best. It's just a good system regardless of the flavor of play.
Manu, you ever play any of the Blood Brothers' scenarios? That's a RIOT!
