The Hitchhiker's series (I'd call it a trilogy, since that's what it goes by...all 5 books of it...but I guess that would be confusing) was terrific...I think I started reading it when I was 11 or so, since I'd already been playing the computer game for a while. Don't think I ever finished it, though, actually...well, got partway through 'So Long and Thanks for All the Fish,' but then I had to give it back to whoever and never had the money to buy the last two (or couldn't find a store that carried them).
