Unless you grew up under the same conditions that I did it may be hard to understand my views on God. You see, when I was a child my entire life revolved around the Catholic Church. My parents were Catholics and we attended church every Sunday. I was led to believe that to miss mass or a holy day was a sin. There was Sunday. There were the 7 holy days of obligation. There were the special events that defined every Catholic's life. I went to CCD. I was the only one in my family of 6 kids to attend public school but my parents were still determined to be sure I got a Catholic education. I learned my lessons well.
My Catholic education really began with my father. At night before I slept I asked him the questions that many kids asked. Who is God? How was the world created? How was I born? WHat happens to people after they die?
The answers were sometimes enlightening and sometimes unsettling.
As I grew older I continued to follow the dictates of the Church.
In our house we did not swear. We did not take the lords name in vain, we did not say Hell or Jesus. My mother always told me that her primary goal for me was to be in heaven with God.
Well now I am older and I came around to having many doubts. I read the old testiment and see it as being inconsistant with the new testiment.
Is our God a God of peace? Yes, God wants Peace. Jesus says he who lives by the sword shal perish by the sword. Well if this is true than why does Moses call his followers to take the holy land by force slaughtering all who are in their way.
Jesus himself says to the Canaanite women that he has come only for the 12 tribes. Well this is consistant with Moses but not with Isaia who promises that God of Isreal shall lead the entire world or St Paul who brings the word of God to the rest of the world.
I wonder if I can return to the simple child like faith I had.
I see the rest of the world, those who are not Christians as being saved as well. How can you say that a devout Hindu or Buddist is any worse than a Christian.
SO many questions. I pray for an answer!
