Ford to Shield Police Car Gas Tanks

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Ford Motor Co. agreed Friday to install shield around the gas tanks on 350,000 Crown Victoria police cars across the country after at least a dozen officers were killed in fiery crashes.

Ford's agreement to pay for the modifications and to study ways to make the cars safer came after police departments charged that the vehicles are prone to burst into flames in high-speed, rear-end crashes.

Approximately 80 percent of police cars on the road in the United States are Ford Crown Victorias.

Sue Cischke, vice president of engineering for Ford, said the automaker was responding to concerns raised by police nationwide. But she maintained the Crown Victoria is a safe car.

``We're trying to make a safe car safer,'' Cischke said.

Shields made of plastic and rubber will be installed on the rear axle, the differential and underneath the gas tanks. Those components have either been faulted in accidents or showed the potential to puncture the gas tank in crash tests.

She would not say how much the modifications will cost. But a state government official speaking on condition of anonymity said it would cost about $50 million to retrofit the 350,000 Crown Victorias used by police departments nationwide.

``This is a significant step forward in the safety of the Crown Victoria,'' said Arizona Attorney General Janet Napolitano, who has been pressing Ford to make the cars safer.

Three Arizona police officers died in fiery Crown Victoria crashes.

Cischke said the retrofit kits should start arriving at Ford dealerships by the end of next month, and all the shields should be installed by January.

She said the same modifications will not be made to the consumer version of the Crown Victoria, though drivers will be able to buy retrofit kits if they want them.

At the risk of partially agreeing with Frog here & bashing Ford ( :( ), if the tank are dangerous like that, shouldn't EVERYBODY get a shield, not just the police???

Rob-

From what I've read about the incidents, the crownvic has only 250-350 cases of 'exploding' tanks reported. It was all during rear impacts at 70MPH+

I think they feel that only the cruiser crownvics need protection at that speed.

Manu-

You've obviously not driven on the highways in this state.

They would need protection at 90+ MPH

LOL

Prometheus,

I don't dislike Ford in general, but they have had a couple of embarrassing gaffes in their time. Pinto was a big one.

it should be done to ALL Crown Vics and Grand Marquis (same body platform)... the regular ppl need that kind of protection/assurance too. and i'm sure there are more than the 250-350 accidents that involved gas tank explosions that have been reported in the media... big wink here ;)

Actually, the pinto isn't half bad with a relocated fuel cell, and a big block stuffed in...LOL There currently is a 10 second Pinto on the NOPI circuit

the Jefferson Parish S.O. was filing a lawsuit against ford about that too. I remember reading it in the paper a few weeks ago

at least ford is actually doing something about

The local news showed some footage of a few cruisers in teh area that have had that problem, one killed an officer when he couldn't get out of the car and it was on fire :(

red,

Interesting to see your point of view.

Anyone know how much it costs for these additions? Are they something that all cars could have?
