the first step in any real endeavour to unearth the truth has to be to arrive at a concensus-you have to define terms and so you have to find your common ground
this is why you jerks fail -this is why ron paul is such a loser and why you love him so much
maybe its even why americans are known worldwide as the stupidest people on earth

Not really. After all many people cannot handle the truth.

-you have to define terms and so you have to find your common ground

Language is obviously essential in order to communicate. Even honey bees know that.

Agreed upon terms are certainly a powerful tool in any real endeavour to unearth the truth. Consensus, OTOH, isn't always even desirable.

Welcome back, brother!

At the same time we're known as the people who landed on Mars, sent probes into deep space, and have the strongest economy on earth. I think they view us as naive, not stupid.

hello,bruder-agreeing on terms requires at least soem concensus

America's leaders are like everybody else's leaders at least where government is concerned. They are mostly tools who worship at the alter of power and get off on telling everone else what to do. And have the chutzpah to believe that some asshat 1500 miles away whose never even seen your moccasins let alone taken a step in them, has a better idea of what you should do with your life than you do.

The truth is never about consensus. If it was Columbus wouldn't be here and we still be riding horses.

Oh and it's those 'nancy pants college boys' running everything now...

That's what I find so entertaining about the lower quintiles of the party of the left. Almost everything they believe is the exact opposite of the truth.

i tend to agree with this. i often have the feeling that all politicians are godless motherfuckers, but that could very well be a hyperbole :)

The truth is never about consensus. If it was Columbus wouldn't be here and we still be riding horses.

the OP mentioned that there had to be some consensus (of course not full, that would leave nothing to discuss). in this case i imagine there was a consensus about the value for new traderoutes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Columbus:
Columbus's speculative proposal to reach the East Indies by sailing westward received the support of the Spanish crown, which saw in it a promise, however remote, of gaining the upper hand over rival powers in the contest for the lucrative spice trade with Asia

also, the OP mentioned consensus about terms, not really applicable to colombus' situation i think...

(and obv: agreeing on definitions of terms = a measure of consensus)

The point is that the earth is round regardless of what anyone believes to the contrary. The truth does not require consensus to be true. It is either true or it is not and consensus has no bearing upon it.

agreed.

in an
endeavour to unearth the truth you would not need consensus not about the truth itself, for the reasons you stated, but a consensus about the mode of discussion and the terms you use in it.

But that is for the most part innate to any human culture. It's called language.
