Aphasia 06-07-2001, 05:40 AM Pennsylvania is also a very boring redneck state, with, I believe, the third highest activity of the KKK of any state in the U.S. I lived in and around the Harrisburg area for 18 years, and I've been to most of the state, from Philly to Erie, Easton to Pittsburgh, and just about everything in between. You have to admit that PA has some of the most friendly people and nicest mountains in the U.S. though. I live in the South and think they are much nicer in PA. I have also lived in CA and for the most part feel that the majority of folks there are either untrusting or untrustworthy. Traveling in the U.S. and making sociological odservations is a hobby of mine. I have lived in 7 states in various regions. I have traveled/stayed in 46 states multible times too. PA ranks high in natural beauty and friendlyness. Its a little low on the economy side of things. As far as CA goes? I is a gorgious state!!! But the cost of living is insane and out of sinc with the rest of the US AND the majority of the natives Californians are flakey or borderline grifters. I know that is a huge generalisation but hey, its based on LOTS of personal experience. With that said, I have met some of the most interesting folks in CA too. ------------------ Winner of the "peoples Choice award" for supreme advocate for the people! I'm not "always right", it just seems that way Spelling is for kids! I think you got the point! Manu 06-07-2001, 11:00 AM Man, I think people just have a way bad perception of CA/LA in general. It is sad. I've been all around the world, spent time in India, Singapore, Tokyo, and all over the US, and CA is one of my favorite places! As far as the people being untrustworthy, well, I dunno, I have never really been taken. But God damn, the cost of living it out the roof! ------------------ Manu Narayan Fordman50 06-08-2001, 12:35 AM I like Santa Barbra and San Lois Obisbo (sp?) I wish I could afford to retire thre! I think that a lot of NATIVE Californians are jaded. Many also have a tendencey to be somewhat superficial. I stayed at Peperdine for a summer in Malibu. I also lived in SF for a year in 86 and have visited all over many times. It would be heaven on earth if we could just get rid of the people http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif ------------------ Winner of the "peoples Choice award" for supreme advocate for the people! I'm not "always right", it just seems that way Spelling is for kids! I think you got the point! Manu 06-08-2001, 12:59 AM I hear ya about jaded/superficial. But HONESTLY in any 'big' city that is how it is. In my travels at least. Malibu, that is right by me. :-) ------------------ Manu Narayan Fordman50 06-08-2001, 01:09 PM That sounds about right. However, I dont think that since I have actually lived there. West Virginians have a BAD rep in VA (where Im from) too. I remember in CA whenEVER I told someone I was from VA (very gentile, conservitive, and snooty overall) they ALLWAYS said: " oh WEST VA, mountain mama" LOL http://discussanything.com/Ubb/mad.gif NO! ------------------ Winner of the "peoples Choice award" for supreme advocate for the people! I'm not "always right", it just seems that way Spelling is for kids! I think you got the point! Guitarophile 06-09-2001, 12:17 AM In my little cross-country finding-myself jaunt I took a little while back(remember that one?), I learned a lot about what people thought of Californians. We're apparently all movie stars or aspiring movie stars. Every last one of us smokes those marijuana cigarettes(reefers, to the lay-person). We're all no-good communist hippies and there should be a great big earthquake on the San Andreas (the only fault-line in the world) so we can all sink into the ocean. Oh, and West Virginians are all in-bred. ------------------ "Who are you?" "The devil," she said. "The devil in love." Guitarophile 06-09-2001, 12:25 AM We have the same problem here with Northern Californians. What's with those guys? I hear they all worship the devil. Oh, and that gossip about the West Virginians comes straight from the 13-year-old North Carolina cousin of a certain Texan belle. I'm not sure which one's the city mouse, but it's great to hear 'em argue in different shades of Southern. ------------------ "Who are you?" "The devil," she said. "The devil in love." Fordman50 06-09-2001, 09:37 AM lol, Im a southerner but not really by choice. by and large, I dont really relate to most of the southerners I know. I am more a yankee or like a Northern CA than a southerner. I stay here for the weather, GREAT jobs and low low cost of living. One day I will escape the south for good (or not http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif ) ------------------ Winner of the "peoples Choice award" for supreme advocate for the people! Im just curious cause I've been reading some books by a guy named William Volman about San Francisco in the early-mid 80s. ------------------ "Convictions are more dangerous enemies of truth than lies." -Nietzsche Fordman50 06-11-2001, 06:37 AM THE TENDERLOIN BABY. DaOgre 06-11-2001, 01:52 PM Well now that we've renamed this thread to "Do people hate Californians" I was the original Cross Country OG, and made my trip to Chicago... and no when I stepped inside the city the people didnt bow before me and offer to give me a place to stay... there were just as many homeless... and everyone looked just as cruel and heartless as any Californian. But at least they weren't superficial! Honestly though... people talk about Jaded and Superficial like its a problem... but its about whatever gives you pleasure and happiness. If jaded is gets people by more than optomistic than big deal if you seem bitter to the world as long as your "happy". LA is also one of the most tolerant cities in the world... which says something. ------------------ "Who wants some? Huh? Who wants a little?" -TOAO Ash Guitarophile 06-11-2001, 03:56 PM Nobody bowed? Did they know you were from L.A.? Weird. This was like my first time beyond Nevada and it was like being in a particularly boring episode of Sliders. Their world is just like our world, only everybody talks with an accent! *BUM BUM BUMMMMMMMMM* ------------------ "Who are you?" "The devil," she said. "The devil in love." CodyChaos 06-11-2001, 06:09 PM Thats rad, one of the chapters of the book was just about the skinheads from Haight, they talk about playing soccer and stuff. And like the others are about bums and prostitutes and various personages. It sounds like a colorfull cast of characters, Im sad i missed it. Originally posted by Fordman50: THE TENDERLOIN BABY. And the fact that you dont acknowlege that is a little scary. Whats worse is that being Jaded and superficial are just symptoms of a larger sociatal problem. I comes from living in an invironment where people dont trust one another at many different levels. Without Trust, there can be no honesty, no real deep human connection, no letting your hair down and just being yourself, no real sense of community. I am having a hard time getting the right words here so I may sound a little off. Cody---WTF??? Really? What is the name of that book? I heard there was one called "101 Skinhead nights" in which the author interviewed a bunch of people that I knew. In that one the main charactor was a good freind of mine named "Dicky Disgusting". I wonder if I know the author of your book under another nick name. EVERYONE had a wierd nick name like "Douge Drug", or something out there. I dont think that you missed anything dude, I am DAMN lucky to be alive! I did things that shold have got me killed. I lived in harms way. I was 20 in 86 and drove a Honda CB650. I was skinny with white and or blue hair that was all spiked out. I would get toasted of of Humbolts best and go riding (no helmet laws back then) my big 650 like it was a BMX bike. I would zoom up one STEEP hill, then FLY over the intersection (sometimes with my GF on the back), then land on the downside of the hill without knowing what was even on the other side. Then I would slide on both wheel to regain control all the way down the other side of these VERY steep SF hills. All this while baked out of my mind! This is just ONE example out of many why I am glad to be alive after living in SF in 86/87. Drug were like candy out there and EVERYONE was pushing them. Just walking down the street people would walk up to you and GIVE you acid or speed! Several of my friends got into IV use and a couple died too http://discussanything.com/Ubb/frown.gif Tons of tweekers is what I remember (look that word up in your book) Anyway Cody, let me know about the book, it may be fun to relive that stuff (or not). ------------------ Winner of the "peoples Choice award" for supreme advocate for the people! Vollmann. He wasnt a punk rocker, i think hes just a writer, but I imagine you prolly ran into him at some point. Kinda a goofy looking guy with glasses from his picture. Your friend Dickie is one of the main characters, he also talks alot about a Mark Dagger a guy called Yama some girls named Dan-L and Marissa etc etc. You might be able to find it in the fiction section at Barnes and Noble if you are lucky, or order it online. Its actually a collection of short stories some of which are fiction and some of which are recounts of his experiences or stories people told him. Its funny to have read about all these obscure people and then have you go "oh yea I was there." ------------------ "Convictions are more dangerous enemies of truth than lies." -Nietzsche Fordman50 06-13-2001, 05:30 AM Originally posted by CodyChaos: Well the book is called The Rainbow Stories by William (Bill)T. He went to the same small highschool as me a freedom and was a good friend of mine. Mark dagger was my roomate for a while too!!!!! He was a big skinhead who rode a harly. Had a dagger tatoo on his neck back when tatoos were not very common at all. Dan-l is prob a girl and later bacame Dicky (frank hutton's) wife! I was on the streets for a while and I ran into some old friends who took me in. The proplem was they were all HARDCORE skinheads now and I was not (and would never be) My roomate were all nuts and partied and fought constently (as did I, I guess) The toughest one in the bunch was this big girl called "Boot Woman" She was bad *** ! She later got pregnant and got stoned EVERY day on the nine months and I just couldnt deal with her after that. "The Rainbow stories" proly got its name from the coffee shop in the height called the Double Rainbow where artist and writers would hang out all day with their muses. I was always in that place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a small world. I will HAVE to get that book. After all I helped write it in a small way http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif [This message has been edited by Fordman50 (edited 06-13-2001).] Fordman50 06-13-2001, 02:58 PM BTW, I started a new thread on this subject matter in the pop culture forum.
