I burned a couple cdr's last night (with music) onto really cheap cds. My car cd player has a hard time discerning how many tracks are on it, etc. This has happened before. Is it because they're cheap cd's? Is it becuse of the burn speed or burner quality? Is it just the stereo doesn't read burned cd's well?

Anyone know?

Could be the cheap cd-r's, and it could be that the cd-rs that you used happened to be the "coasters" out of the lot. Sometimes if you buy a spindle of 50 or so, a few of them will turn out to be defective, especially cheap ones. In my experience, the black bottom cd-r's work best and so do TDK. Also some car stereos just have a hard time finding the index points on cd-r's because they are slightly different from commercial cd's.

Would't hurt to cut your burning speed down to 2x or 4x

Slower is more relaible, if you're dealing wiht a finicky reader.

if you hold em up against a light, can you see right thru em? If so, it may help to use a marker on the top to make it darker. Your car laser may have trouble reading it because its too transparent

Here's my advice: Try not being a cheap bastard and fork out the money for better CDR's. ;):D

lucky for me, I can easily do the re-ordering of cdr's for the company myself. Something tells me we need better quality cd's here.
