REDMOND, Washington (AP) -- Microsoft Corp. plans to release on Monday a packet of upgrades for its Windows XP operating system, including changes to satisfy a proposed settlement with the U.S. Justice Department.

The so-called Service Pack 1 includes the usual software patches to fix security flaws and bugs, most of which have already been released separately, and adds temporary support for the Java programming language.

More significantly, though, it will allow computer manufacturers and consumers to switch off and conceal Microsoft's e-mail, Web browser, Internet audio-video player and other software programs. That gives computer vendors and users the option to select rival software -- instead of Microsoft applications -- as default programs.

The changes are part of a settlement reached by Microsoft, the Justice Department and nine states to resolve the government's landmark antitrust litigation against the software giant, which was found to have used illegal means against its competition.

Nine other states are seeking stricter penalties against Microsoft.

U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly in Washington, D.C., the same judge who will decide whether to approve the federal settlement, also must decide whether to grant the states any or all of their requests.

She is expected to make her decision in both cases within the next several months.

Not to mention adding USB 2.0 support.

It also will be disabling Windows Update on any XP Pro OS'es using two particular Product Keys.

Use with caution.

Yeah, I am going to compile as much 3rd party information as I can.

Frog, wasn't 2.0 support in XP to begin with?

Nope- one of the first thing to be complained about was that XP would not natively support USB 2.0

so, what are we saying?

if someone just so happened not to have a legit copy, they shouldn't get SP1?

what would someone do if they needed updates? can they get them w/o the SP1?

I had someone who had the Devils' Own copy of XP Corporate, they installed SP1 now get to wipe it clean and start over.

lol. Don't scare me like that. :-)

Worried thoughts of what may happen to my mom or Dad if they accidentally ran SP1. (not that they have anything worry about by not using a lisenced copy....)

Uh huh...

Sure.

:D

I've heard it that the report said it would just disable your update features from then on, but that in reality it makes the OS unbootable.

you can change the CD key to something used a little less often.. so if ya wanna install SP one and you used the CD key that everyone and thier brothers girlfriends sisters exhusband is using.. you wont have to reinstall from scratch.

PM me if ya need to know how to do it.
