View Full Version : book suggestions...HELP!
slacker79 09-19-2001, 12:49 PM I have to do a book report for my Women's Gender Studies Class(No, I am not a femminatzi!) and I need some suggestions about a good, fairly short book to read. It has to be by a woman aurthor about food, sex, love and/or women's friendships. If you know any good ones to read, please tell me!
Liu01GT 09-19-2001, 12:56 PM joy luck club by amy tan is an excellent one for that.
woman warrior by maxine hong as well.
may not have been written by woman, but told by a woman to a man, memoirs of a geisha.

Snouter 09-19-2001, 02:06 PM I took a "Women in History" class once and not only was I disappointed in the classroom being filled with fugly troglites, the material was very sparse. But the instructor was bitchy about the grading. So be careful and take it as seriously as you can to get an A.
I can't stand her music, but this autobigraphy about a bisexual might be entertaining reading as well:
The Truth Is... My Life in Love and Music
by Melissa Etheridge
James 09-20-2001, 01:20 AM I thought "Map of the World" by Jane Hamilton, was excellent.
The 'Handmaids Tale' by Margaret Atwood would be a great book to study for that class.
D Durden 09-20-2001, 02:40 AM Uh . . . what the hell is a "Women's Gender"?? People don't even HAVE gender . . . that's a term used to describe grammar . . . sheeeeeeeeeesh! Tell your teacher she needs to learn a little about the English language before she can grade a book report.
Tell HER to do one on the dictionary . . . as long as she doesn't have a problem with anything with a "dic" associated with it! LMAO!!!!!

'Gender is a term to describe grammar' http://discussanything.com/Ubb/confused.gif Maybe if you speak French.
Gender is a term used to specify sex, male or female.
Powerboss 09-20-2001, 05:46 AM Ayn Rand. Awesome stuff. Although not very short.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

Well, sorta...actually, sex is what defines the biological male or female, while gender is where along the masculine/feminine spectrum one places themself. Like some women dress/act/talk/think like men, so they'd be biologically female, but they'd fall on the masculine side of the gender spectrum. I took a feminist political theory class last year, so if you want me to explain my whole 7 page paper on the subject, I'm more than willing...
But gender does exist when talking about people, not just French nouns.
