The list illustrates the inability of liberals to find a solid line, then make quick, decisive reforms within a given political party. Hence the blurring of Republican/liberal of 1870 and Democrat/liberal of 1965. If Jim Crow laws -the de facto extension of slavery- were obviously wrong, then why did neither major party take up the issue for over 70 years, since the failure of Reconstruction? There were enuf true liberals somewhere in that time span, evidenced by certain lefty programs of the 1870's, 1900's & 1930's. I must conclude that true liberals were dominated by crass political motives; they realized that most voters wouldn't go for the next step in emancipation and bring down Jim Crow, until a pacifist forced it on the conscience of America.

While conservatives -IMO- tend toward fear of change and lean too hard on pre-judgement, their group discipline is superior to the average liberal. They isolate and remove those who disagree with too many base issues. What evolved into the liberal party of 1937 -the Democrats- failed to invite the Dixiecrats to leave their party at that time. Integrating certain military units could have been the first step, followed by propagandizing their performance in battle during WWII. A gov't that refused to protect genetic discrimination as of 1945 would have advanced our nation much faster than a gov't that reacted 20+ years later. That period of time also pre-dates the welfare state, and could have given us an open view of what "freedom for all" really meant. Mobilizing voters who were racially isolated only a few years earlier, it is possible that the Democrats would have held on to more power in the 1950's and further advanced the liberal agenda by now. Probably fewer reactionary conservatives as a bonus. That would have been the payback of any political loss they might have suffered in 1938-40.

1) Celebrate the worship of the Christian God or Christ himself?
2) Celebrate the idea of exterminating Jews?
