View Full Version : Music rant . . . be warned . . . and be prepared!

Okay, Lisa and I were watching VH1 last night (tape of VH1 actually . . . sad, huh?), and it was on the 100 Greatest Hair Bands. The entire show was basically a trip for me down memory lane. The music brought back MANY happy times, a few sad times, and, well, just TIME, you know? I was in high school and college during all of that, and it was truly good times.

For you younger guys who make fun of hair bands (AND YOU DO!!!! Don't deny it! http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif), I'll let you in on a secret: narcotics not withstanding, it was MUCH easier to get laid after a Warrant concert than after a Marylin Manson concert. Trust me on this on.

Music was fun . . . it was fantasy. Hell, I knew that those guys were getting all the action and none of the rest of us were going to be bopping Bobbie Brown (or Tawny Kitaine . . . *sigh*), but it was fun to watch the madness and get a good laugh. Granted, we had plenty of darker metal (WASP, Priest, Maiden, Metallica), but you could ALWAYS kick on the Bulletboys or Warrant for some fun. Heck, even RAP was fun (Fat Boys, Run-DMC, Beasties). It was almost ALL fun . . . to some extent.

I dunno . . . I just see how music affects teenagers now, and it's not like it was 10-15 years ago. Everything is so damned dark. It's either some screaming rap/metal something or a huge base lick, some unintelligble words interrupted every third or fourth word by either "*****", "ho", or "kill". I keep wanting to scream "WHERE IS POISON WHEN YOU NEED THEM????"

I keep seeing and meeting all these "broody" kids. I want to yell "why the hell are you brooding??? What is so terrible??"

Gosh damn guys, up until the WTC incident, we've had things pretty good the last 10-15 years. I mean, hell, during the 80's we were in a bit of a recession but we were HAPPY. I mean, hell, we didn't all have new cars, subwoofers, or Tommy cod pieces, but we DID have some fun, lively music with videos that had lots of comic book sex and bloody little violence, racism, or whatever.

I dunno' . . . I'm just trying to understand what all the damn brooding and pissed off attitudes are coming from. I mean, HELL, I'm DRIVING THE CAR I had in high school every f-ing day . . . AND I'M HAPPY! I see all these "brooding" 17 year old guys driving $40k Land Rovers with $5k stereos and wearing a grand's worth of clothes smoking . . . and being broody . . . with their cell phone and beeper in their hand. AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGG! WHAT THE **** HAS GOT YOU SO ****ING MISERABLE???? Did your girlfriend Felatia forget to take her pill last night? Are you upset that your parents made your girlfriend move out because they didn't think it was appropriate for two 16 year olds to be sharing the same bed? Are you feeling let down because the latest "Puff P-Diddy Compton New York Gangsta' Mob Ho-screwin' Killaz" CD doesn't say "*****'" but 2,789 times in the first 3 tracks? Are you questioning humanity because people look at the tattoo of Satan crawling out of your bellybutton with a girl's severed head in one hand and a Nazi flag in the other and think you're weird (of course, it wouldn't be so bad if Satan didn't have a huge phallus protruding from his forehead . . .)? Of course, it COULD be the fact that NO ONE CARES anymore that you have your nipples pierced as well as your nose, eyebrow, tongune, and lip . . . and it's all connected by strands of fibre optic that glows. SSSSHHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESH!

Sorry guys . . . didn't mean to go apeshit, but it gets to me, you know? I mean, this is a great country, and we have lots of reasons to be happy (even now). I think one of the reasons we're NOT happy is because of all the dark and unhappy music that's being pushed on us. I mean, hell, we had some dark stuff (Slayer, King Diamond, etc . . .), but it wasn't NEARLY as mainstream as the stuff I hear today.

I think if you weighed it all up, Poison, Ratt, and Warrant weren't so bad for us, afterall.

Where is Poison you say? They're here, baby. Toured each of the last two summers, with bands like Cinderella, Slaughter, Dokken, etc. Played to a packed house here in Atlanta at Lakewood Amphitheatre (~15,000 capacity), and put on a helluva show.

well durden...

first of all i think you make a gross generalization.

sure there are a group of teens that like that stuff....but there are many who are into alot of diffrent types of music.

The benafit that teens and music listeners have now is the vast variety of musical choices....sure if you want to listen to something depressing, or "hardcore" you can as easyly find it as much as you can find something that is light and fun.

Now, i agree, some rap has gotten out of hand, but the best thing that i have felt do deal with that is just to ignore it. I have my own personal boycott going...wanna join?

Oh yeah I forgot ... they headlined the "Has-Beens of Rock Tour". Ten more years and they'll qualify for the "Iron Lung Tour". After that ... it's off to the lounge at Ceasar's, baby! http://discussanything.com/Ubb/smile.gif

Actually, while all that "fun" music was pumping up male high school fantasies, there was plenty of angry, brooding, socio-political music being made as well. The "hair bands" may have owned the airwaves, but not the hearts of all music fans.

... when i was a kid we used to WALK to our metal concerts ... uphill ... both ways!! and we were HAPPY TO DO IT!!!

Poison ... where are they now? They finally found their niche ... working at Mickey D's.

James, oh, I agree . . . I had my Metallica times, BUT it wasn't mainstream and, honestly, even the "Eddie rules" guys had a Poison or Warrant CD hiding that no one knew about. And, basically, Iron Maiden didn't have a large outlet. Face it, they didn't get much radio play, and MTV wasn't that widespread.

I had a LONG talk about this all with some friends tonight, and I feel better . . . ABOUT MY OPINION. LOL! We DID have more fun!

I think the thing that we boiled the evening down to is desensitivity. A buddy argued that there's no difference between some rapper/singer talking about screwin' some ho's as opposed to Warrant singing about "Cherry Pie". But, the argument didn't hold water. There IS a difference. It's the same difference between saying "my, your wife is attractive" and "man, your wife is SO hot . . . I'd love to **** her sometime . . . especially like if she was tied up and all . . . " Granted, both are compliments to someone's wife's good looks, but . . . hehehehe . . . you get the point.

I just think that some of this stuff is making kids less and less sensitive. I mean, you pound "*****', ho, kill, Mac-10 . . ." and all that crap into some kid's brains for about 5 years, it sticks.

James, as far as my gross generalization, maybe so . . . in your eyes. All I know is that I go to the mall and every car that goes buy is some kid bumping "*****' *****' *boom* blah blah bitch-slapa' ho *boom* " . . . you know? I think that the more a kid hears about killing, raping, and hurting people, the more "normal" that becomes.

Feel free to laugh at the old hair band guys. It's cool. They really DO some strange things . . . like sing their own songs and play their own instruments (that's those wooden things with the funny strings . . . figured those musical things might have confused you). You probably can't understand most of the words because not every other one is an explative or unintelligable. Granted, it doesn't have a bass hit that will wake the neighbors . . . sorry. Oh, and it's hard to understand the songs since they're original without all the samples. But, as hard as it is, we managed to get by in the 80's on it. http://discussanything.com/Ubb/biggrin.gif

Oh, for what it's worth, the old "has been" tours held 3 or 4 places in the highest grossing tours last year. Seems that people with jobs who want to spend a night having a good time make for good customers as opposed to these people's ungrateful kids . . . LMAO!!!

oops ... ya got the wrong guy. i believe it's scott you're looking for ... but you didn't hear it from me. but as long as i'm typing ... http://discussanything.com/Ubb/smile.gif

I just think that some of this stuff is making kids less and less sensitive. I mean, you pound "*****', ho, kill, Mac-10 . . ." and all that crap into some kid's brains for about 5 years, it sticks.

we're in agreement regarding the extremes to which the rappers have taken their lyrics. although we should remember, that one element of pop/rock music is to piss off the older generation. based on your post, i think they got to you.

it's the same difference between saying "my, your wife is attractive" and "man, your wife is SO hot . . . I'd love to **** her sometime . . . especially like if she was tied up and all . . . " Granted, both are compliments to someone's wife's good looks, but . . . hehehehe . . . you get the point.

"... like if she was tied up and all" - Gangsta Rapper

" ... i'd love to **** her sometime" - Hair Band

"... my, your wife is attractive" - 40's jazz, such as "The Way You Look Tonight"

seems to me, only the last example is a compliment (to the woman ... not her mate)and may desensitize the listener, at the very least.

Feel free to laugh at the old hair band guys.

i used to laugh at the old hair band guys, back in their heyday ... but now ... it's just kinda sad. they have to be the absolute epitome of corporate, ready for radio, image over everything, rock. while you were watching the blow-dry fly, i was listening to Husker Du, The Replacements, The Birthday Party, The Pixies, Sonic Youth, Tom Waits, ect. .... and before that, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Talking Heads, Television, The Clash ... and before that .... ah hell, let's save some time and space ... it started with 45's by Otis Redding, Ray Charles, ect.

Poison - SOLD OUT!
yep ... a long time ago. in my opinion, there's an inverse relationship between ticket & record sales/radio play ... and .... living, breathing, rock and roll.

after all that ... we should all listen to the stuff that jump-starts our heart. for me ... please hold the hair.

You make some good point Dave.

I think part of it is we, as a society, are constantly being bombarded with new and better things.
Then we all want these things, and we cant have all these things and people get angry about it.
I try to be happy with what I have, and thats it. Sure there are things I want, but I just accept the fact that I might never get them, so I just look at my daughter and I just smile and melt...

The "has-been" tours will always be a fixture. These guys that play to a predominately adolescent audience get back together when their fan-base grows up, gets real jobs, and have a lot more money to spend. Everyone, as they age, will like to go see their old favorites play and feel like kids again. It's not really fair to single Poison or any other band out, as the cycle is perpetual. Another recent highlight was Motley Crue, Megadeth, & Anthrax.

This is starting to sound like HS days, when the metalheads (myself included) would rip on those that listened to the glam stuff, while we "purists" showed off our Megadeth, CoC, & Motorhead tapes (and jammed to the glam stuff when noone else was around).

James . . . uh . . . OOOPS! http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif

Yeah, Poison "sold out" because people like their music . . . PUH-LEEEEZE. "Metallica sold out because . . . well, they put out an album that more than the ultra-metalheads put out." See, I've NEVER understood that "sold out" thing. That's a garbage term given to "outcasts" when they make it big.

I love Cake's "Rock n Roll Lifestyle". That fits SO well today.

See, I listen to music for pleasure. If I don't enjoy it, poop . . . out it goes. I've got Motorhead permanently locked in my CD changer in my Mustang, so don't assume you're EITHER a glam or hard fan. I like them both. So what?

Purists are fine, but they have to realize that not everyone rips apart cords and sub-melodies to detect for electronic corrections. It's not a profession for me.

I listen to the new stuff. I don't shut out anyone . . . that pleases me. I do NOT listen to music because I think it will make me look cool when someone sees the indie CD case in my car. Sorry, if music doesn't please the heart, it isn't worth the plastic it's on.

Hey, I'd rather listen to a "sell out" group I like rather than someone who's lived the struggling artists life and puts his whole heart in his crying guitar . . . and sucks.

I'm going to open this post with a little anecdote that DaOgre shared with me last night over a new never-ending pasta bowls.

"So these two friends were walking down the street. One friend asks the other, 'What exactly is punk rock?' The other proceeds to kick over a trashcan and says, 'That was punk rock.' 'I think I get it,' says the one. Then he kicks over the next trashcan they come across. 'That was punk rock, right?' 'No,' says the other, 'that was trendy.'"

Throughout time there have been two schools of music: Music as Art, and Music as Entertainment. As the indier-than-thou craze sweeps the nation, it becomes more popular to like the lesser-known music, which has always been that music that is artistic in nature. "Oh no," say the MaE musicians, "how will we feed our skank-ass hos and our little illegitimate accident births?" They begin to emulate the MaA musicians, hoping to get a slice off that pie. The problem is: entertainment-oriented people don't understand art, by their very nature, so they emulate what they're good at; superficial little details. This is how we get "dark" "broody" music that fits easily into a three-minute format and is as radio-ready as "Cherry Pie", verily.

The same thing goes for the listeners of said "alterna-pop". They hear these new bands on the radio, instantly feel all broody and artistic, and go and buy the high-definition 20-bit CD to shove into their 200-CD-changer-on-wheels with a lift kit and a built-in Warner Bros. entertainment system. Then they go cruising around, bumping that shiz like they've got real problems. This is just the way things work. Hair bands were the alterna-pop of the 80's, Dave. You're condemning the modern equivalent of yourself.

Thank you, drive through.

Let's see how long they keep dressing this way

I love 80's rock, much of it, anyway. Hell, my latest Columbia House shipment contains Dokken, Scorpions, Loverboy, & Krokus. The Dokken & Krokus photos are especially funny.

But the whole look-like-a-woman thing was just dumb. Dumb like Dungeons & Dragons metal bands. You had to ignore a lot of hokey crap to listen to good guitarists then.

I miss good lead guitar. I love today's heavy rhythym sound, but I miss the solos.

After reading all this all I can say is that I feel VERY old sometimes. I graduated in '77 and our bands were Zepplin, Stones, Aerosmith (many of whom should go to the ugly, old rockers graveyard!!), The Nug, Yes, ELP, Richie Blackmore, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple. Shucks, I was still relativly young when disco came out!!! I was 14 when KISS crawled onto the scene!!!
