I've posted thie following on two other websites, hoping someone 'out there' might be able to help with a vexing problem I have with my 'tin-brain' and now I'm doing the same here:

Can someone perhaps please throw some light on a recurring problem with my computer? Any help/advice would be much appreciated, as I am a total moron with these @*#^@&$%%@&^#&@^ 'tin-brains.'

I have Windows ME, and the more I use it, the more I love it. Until about six weeks ago I could multitask to my heart's content without any problems, but then, all of a sudden my computer developed an attitude by hanging when in certain probrammes on the net, and I have to kick its butt with ctrl+alt+del to get it going again. No, it doesn't freeze up completely - it just hangs, and once I've 'kicked' it, I'm still on Internet, but my little computers disappear from the bottom right-hand corner, which means I can't disable the connection in the normal way, but have to restart again.

What happens is when I go into a website and when I go into a forum from the main page, that's when it happens, yet after contr+alt+del it behaves itself in that particular site. But if I want to pull out another site while in the first one, the same happens.

I also have Norton's System Works (installed two weeks ago) and have used it to scan/analyse everything, but every item imaginable. It did pick up 171 errors which have been fixed, and it now shows that everything is in order. Yet it still tends to hang at times.

I'm also networked with my hubby's computer, and his gives no trouble at all - I can multitask on his with no problems whatsoever, and he has exactly the same set-up as I have.

My son went through my system with a fine-toothed comb, but could not find any indication of what is causing this.

Before Norton's System Works was installed, it also used to come up with the following errors (Whatever they mean!)

VWIN32 (05) + 0000206E ERROR: OE: 0028: C02A5246

VMM(01) + 000132CC ERROR: OD: 0028: C00142CC

ERROR: OE: 0028: C003060D

ERROR: OE: 0028: C00587C9

ERROR: OD 0028: D61A1ED2

REGERROR

IE 5.50.4134.0100

IE 6.0.2600.0000

ICSMGR CAUSED ERROR KERNEL 32 DLL

EXPLORER CAUSED AN ERROR IN MSHTML.DLL

EXCEPTION OE AT 0028: C000E8BE IN VxD VMM (01) +0000D8 BE.
CALLED FROM 0028: C004AB93 IN VxD VFAT (01) + 0000 B23F

Any bright ideas, perhaps?

Thanks in anticipation.

(I have to admit I am a complete moron when it comes to trying to understand what makes these things tick - whenever a funny message appears, or a funny thing happens in front of me, I go completely brain-dead. After all, I was born in an age when pens, pencils and typewriters were the only means of communication, whereas you younger generation were born with a keyboard in one hand and a mouse in the other! LOL)

nah, have you updated your internet explorer?

I am not too sure what it could be... I would highly recommende ditching ME and getting 98se, 2k or XP if you can run it.

If all else fails, back up your good stuff and format/reinstall

that's the best I can do :|

Well, it *may* be the modem.
But I would suggest a reinstall.

Agree with the others. Pull the modem, unload the drivers, reinstall the modem.

Also, I agree that an upgrade to WinXP would be a good idea. Much more stable than ME

KIM-

Go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Make sure you upgrade to the latest/greatest IE and run all the updates IE has for it.

Also run any critical updates that windows has available.

Let us know if that changes anything!

I would add unload any ghosts of the modem in Safe Mode and make sure there are no programs still installed that would look for the modem.

THEN boot up without it, boot back down.

Then reinstall the modem.

I have ME, and I also get those Error Messages from time to time. Usually rebooting helps.

My grateful thanks to all of you for your replies. As I said in my posting, I'm a total moron as far as computers are concerned, but my youngest (she's a webmaster) will shortly be coming down to Durban, where we stay, and she said she wants to reformat my computer and load XP. I'll also print out your replies and show them to her.

Yet I find it rather strange that my hubby also has ME and shares my modem (we're networked) and yet I experience no such problems on his machine. Ah, well - perhaps it might be a good idea to get a new modem too and keep this one as a spare. Now I just have to sit tight and wait for my child - personally I won't even attempt to try doing anything as I might just go wrong somewhere and that would put paid to my system...

Once again, thanks so far - I really appreciate your help and advice!

No, DngrMse - way off the mark! You'e probably thinking of Dublin in Ireland. Durban is South Africa's (and Africa's, for that matter) largest port, situated on the east coast of the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Subtropical climate - I understand very similar to that of Maimi; hot and humid in summer and mild winters. This winter, so far, we can count the fairly cold days on our fingers, otherwise cool nights and fairly warm days - and even our lawn never dies completely - it's always green, summer or winter! And during midwinter school holidays (July) thousands of people who live inland where it gets realy cold, come down here for the holidays and swim in the sea and even catch a tan!
