Fox News announces it is dropping Glenn Beck's daily talkshow - but spins it as a "new partnership"

Fox News announced today it is dropping Glenn Beck's daily talkshow – but in its official statement said the network and the controversial host would work together on unnamed future projects.

That may just be a face-saving device for Beck and the network, or it may be an attempt by Fox to find a way to use Beck in a form that avoids alienating advertisers.

Here's the official statement from Fox News:

FOX NEWS AND MERCURY RADIO ARTS ANNOUNCE NEW AGREEMENT

Fox News and Mercury Radio Arts, Glenn Beck's production company, are proud to announce that they will work together to develop and produce a variety of television projects for air on the Fox News Channel as well as content for other platforms including Fox News' digital properties. Glenn intends to transition off of his daily program, the third highest rated in all of cable news, later this year.

Roger Ailes, Chairman and CEO of Fox News said, "Glenn Beck is a powerful communicator, a creative entrepreneur and a true success by anybody's standards. I look forward to continuing to work with him." Glenn Beck said: "I truly believe that America owes a lot to Roger Ailes and Fox News. I cannot repay Roger for the lessons I've learned and will continue to learn from him and I look forward to starting this new phase of our partnership."

Joel Cheatwood, SVP/Development at Fox News, will be joining Mercury Radio Arts effective April 24, 2011. Part of his role as EVP will be to manage the partnership and serve as a liaison with the Fox News Channel.Roger Ailes said: "Joel is a good friend and one of the most talented and creative executives in the business. Over the past four years I have consistently valued his input and advice and that will not stop as we work with him in his new role.""Glenn Beck" is consistently the third highest rated program on cable news.

For the 27 months that "Glenn Beck" has aired on Fox News, the program has averaged more than 2.2 million total viewers and 563,000 viewers 25-54 years old, numbers normally associated with shows airing in primetime, not at 5pm. "Glenn Beck" has dominated all of its cable news competitors since launch.

I told you guys that despite his high ratings Beck was costing Fox ad dollars.

That and Fox's overall ratings decrease made this happen.

Hey! Liberals can be happy again since they won't be so oppressed any more, and stuff. It's so hard having voices on the radio criticize you.

well after losing 300 advertisers and a million viewers it's no surprise. It's a shame he didn't reach 30 months.

Right, but now you can feel all virtuous and stuff because his show isn't on TV any more. I guess I was wrong. Liberals are never happy.

I told you guys that despite his high ratings Beck was costing Fox ad dollars. That makes no sense at all. Ratings bring in advertisers. The reality is that his ratings had dropped off and just like liberal talk radio, the controversial nature of his program didn't appeal to advertisers.

That and Fox's overall ratings decrease made this happen.Every network had a decrease, so this doesn't hold any water either. Grasping at more straws is probably your best bet.

This is old news and has been politically twisted. Everyone knows I can't stand Glenn Beck. He's a liar, opportunist, and a hypocrite. But the simple fact of the matter is, this has been expected for awhile. Glenn Beck is having health issues and is likely going to be less and less in the direct spotlight.

Now maybe MSNBC will get rid of his counterparts on that network. Schultz, Madcow, O'Donnell, wait......then there would be no MSNBC. And noone to make retarded lefties feel special.

Since FNC income is up 18% for 2010 you don't know what you are talking about.

Most cable news shows have shown a decrease which they all do after an election cycle, but Beck being third behind The Factor and Hannity isn't the reason for him departing.

Personally I don't like Beck because of his slant on Religion and after a while that to me is boring.

Please tell me why Olberman departed MSNBC? Didn't have anything to do with him being a political hack, could it? Even NBC couldn't handle his blatant partisanship.

Since FNC income is up 18% for 2010

How much of that is Beck responsible for?

It's really hard to peg Beck anymore. Those on the far right like myself view him as a philosemitic Zionist due to his fawning over Israel, yet those on the far left label him a closet anti-semite because of his show constantly "naming the Jew" and their disproportionately high contributions to Marxism and Socialism.

I'll still listen to his radio program down in Pittsburgh like I have been since 2005. I think he is incredibly funny. And I don't mean that insultingly. The guy has a great sense of humor IMO.

Manstein, I knew he had Zionist intentions since Joe Lieberman was his backer and like with most talk shows, anything goes except criticism of Israel. But he was really getting bizarre lately, like he viewed himself as a prophet of some kind.

I think Dick hit it on the money (ha!), but I also foresee more turmoil caused by Beck in the near future. His company will probably be the production company for a slew of new shows to fill in the programming slot that his daily show currently occupies.

It'll be a hydra situation, while people are busy rejoicing over cutting the head off the serpent, two (or more) will grow back.

Matter of fact, it's for the same purpose: manipulation.

Why is it different when a guy does it? Why you gotta be sexist?

Viewership and people who actually buy products are often two very different things.

He does sell books and other products because of his radio show, but Madison Avenue is a whole nother ball game.

Plus,Beck even polarizes conservatives ,over 300 clients who buy ads on other Fox News programs said they did not want their ads on any program Glenn Beck was on because they did not want to be associated with his lowbrow image.

TT, Glenn Beck isnt just going to go away.

I hope he doesn't ,he discredits conservatism way more than anyone else can.:nice:

I watched Faux for the first time in months just the other day; somebody said Geraldo was doing yet another of his lame assed 'Front Line Coverage' in Libya, and I ran in to watch just in case he got winged, maybe a random shot taking his ear off or something, but the crappy marksmanship of Arabs yet again let him get away without a scratch. That made many people very sad.

I know why the MSM will never ever have a great debater like Peter Camejo on, he'd kill every conservative and faux 'liberal' in existence in a legit debate, but if Fox really wants an alternative to the same half-witted nonsense it's been putting out for years, they need new blood, and real leftists.

Too bad most media is just shilling for either 'Party' in the chase for the big advertising bucks spent every election cycle. Buckley used to have a good show, much too short for the topics covered but nonetheless viewers got a fairly honest cross section of American politics from his show.

So enlighten me, what did he say before leaving the show? I don't follow him but did watch his show a few times to get his theme: right wing populist. For thoughtful challenges, I prefer George Will or archives of WF Buckley. Beck doesn't come anywhere close, and should be considered for entertainment purposes only.

I have no idea. All I know is liberals have a collective hissy fit just about every time his name comes up, and that counts for something.
