Celeron 400's minimum...some sort of D3D accelerator, maybe a GeForce 256? 64mb RAM, Diamond MX400 sound card, headphones w/ microphones...Win 98 SE, 10/100 Ethernet NIC CAT-5'd to a 5-port switch...maybe one comp should be a dedicated server?

Unless you're buying used parts, it'd be cheapest to run a K7S5A with a duron and 128 MB ram, with a Radeon LE or Geforce2MX (DEAR GOD NOT MX200 PLEASE GOD). Since the board has integrated sound and 10/100 network card, you can put a system together for a little over 200 (excluding monitor).
Wow, thanks for that info. good to know.
Does that accept the latest Duron chips?

The K7S5A accepts every socketed Athlon ever made, including the morgan core durons and the Athlon MP/XP.
One caveat though: some people have issues with uber-cheap power supplies and this motherboard. Just use a power supply from AMD's recommended PSU list and you'll be fine though.
