View Full Version : Building a new puter. Parts listed-router question
ok, getting a sh!tload of OT here soon, so I plan on buying a new puter soon. I have a 466 celeron now, so anything will be faster. I don't want to go toooo big, like 1ghz only, but I want to have good stuff in my puter.
-1ghz AMD Athlon 266fsb
-Abit KT7A MoBo (I have a zm6 now, been great)
-512mb PC133 ram (only $30)
-Mid ATX 300w case Would love front usb, but cant find any affordable ones in mid atx
-19" monitor (nothing bigger will fit in my desk
-30gb ata100 7200 rpm wester digital or matrox HD
-HP 12x burner
-maybe a 3.5" drive
-GeFroce 2 MX400 64mb (will get the G3 when they come down)
-Soundblaster live 5.1 Platinum w/ live!drive
-Lan card, no modem
-Logitech cordless keyboard and optical mouse
I will need a cable router, I am looking at this one ( http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?prid=20&grid=5 ) or this one ( http://www.dlink.com/products/broadband/di704/ )
My question about it, will it act as a network? As in, will I be able to swap files from one puter to the other, I gues be a LAN? I know not much about networks http://discussanything.com/Ubb/biggrin.gif
overall, I think my system is going to cost aroun $1300 with shipping/taxes etc. I might wait another month or 2 to build, prices should come down some more.
whatcha think?

I love to game on it, so I want to keep it. It has been great and has never given me trouble. (built it with some help from a bud)She mainly surfs and plays pacman on it.
It has a 4x burner and 8x dvd, I will prob put the 12x in it and just have a burner only in the new one.

u8nxprt 09-16-2001, 08:58 PM I own the Linksys BEFSR41 and it's a good little router. You will need Windows98 or later operating system to configure your "Network Neighborhood". Then you will be able to share your Internet connection, files and the printer with you other PCs. One PC must be selected to be the print server. The router will be your Internet server.

Yes, a router also acts as a network...
It is really simplyt o setup the network, as the router assigns all of the IPs and what not...
Need any help, post it up or IM me

Rebel79 09-17-2001, 11:44 AM Get a Netgear. Linksys has a good product, but it blocks some ports that makes it impossible to run certain servers for games on your pc.

u8nxprt 09-17-2001, 11:58 PM The Linksys allows you to select one port as your DMZ, that means no firewall and is used for online gaming.

Yeah...and added note, some games work fine when in the firewall. I was always able to play CS/HL fine, and tribes too.

Ok, should I not run a software fire wall if I have a router with a hardwar firewall?
the only game I play online is TFC, so Manu's answer sounds good to me http://discussanything.com/Ubb/wink.gif

u8nxprt 09-19-2001, 12:43 AM Software firewalls never work right on a client side PC. They’re just too much of a nuisance. The Linksys hardware firewall is server side and works much better. Some online games can't be used when behind a firewall.
------------------
We aren't discussing anything.
Geoffery, I've never used a software firewall, just hardware, and it works great.
Only issue you MAY run into with TFC is if you're hosting the game...But I assume you'd use a pre-existing server.

I am using norton internet security now. I have started a server in TFC I guess. I hit "create game" but no one ever joins and I get lonely http://discussanything.com/Ubb/biggrin.gif

Betty 09-21-2001, 06:36 PM If you want a really nice top-o-the line single processor Athlon board, go for the Soyo Tek Dragon. It's loaded. I also suggest the Epox EP-8K7A. I've used a few Epox boards, and they're high quality.

kinda ironic.. I was just looking at those in maximum PC. I think they are about $140 on pricewatch.
Also found some boards that look good too. Unlike the Abit I want, these run DDR ram and have 6 usb. They are MSI boards.
pros or cons on MSI?
I have changed up what I want, simply going with 256mb of DDR instead of 512mb of 133. And maybe switching to the 1.4 and MSI board.
www.cumetrix.com (http://www.cumetrix.com) has a nice 1.4ghz system for ~1200, but shipping is $80!!!!
ALSO Just wanted to say that everyones opinion here counts.. I am going to base my final decission of parts by the reponses I get in this forum http://discussanything.com/Ubb/biggrin.gif

We use a lot of MSI boards at work. We RARELY have motherboard problems. They are nice boards and a decent price.
Why not get 512 DDR? DDR isn't that much more than pc133, and you'll LOVE the 256 more memory.

pf, how much does that board run?

Betty 09-25-2001, 01:52 AM Can't tell ya much about MSI boards. No experience with them.
However for your cooling fan, I would go with a Thermaltake. With the Soyo Tek board you can overclock, if that's your thing, and a good quality Thermaltake CPU cooler will add to how much you can safely overclock it. Of course, if the MSI board is overclock capable, I suppose it may be good. I just don't know since I've never dealt with one.
The 3 main things about the Soyo Tek Dragon that I like are the overclocking and it comes with a pretty sweet 6 channel audio package built in, and RAID capability, which with the right RAID configuration can cut down on hard disk errors.

I do plan on going to DDR ram, but I am only going to get 256mb of 2100 now. Will get another stick later.
after reading many reviews on the Soyo dragon, I think I am going to go with it. I too liked the 6 channel onboard soundcard (until I got my soundblaster live 5.1 plat w/ live drive) I figured it would suit me fine until I bought the livedrive and all.
The soyo does have alot of nice features. I found it for $149 on pricewatch. I could get that, get a sound card later, and it would save me about $50. www.soyo.com (http://www.soyo.com) is their site.. they have links to reviews.
As far as overclocking goes.. not interested. When I bought this puter, I bought ~$50 worth of fans cause my bud said I would need them to overclock.. well, never did it. I have fans from www.3dcool.com (http://www.3dcool.com) nice guys there too.
thx for more info!

Yup, $149 at pricewatch like he said, but that's before shipping and everything else...
