I have a lap top and its no more than a few months old. I leave it on when I am away, busy, at school or what ever. But it seems like when its on over 6 hours it starts to freeze up and I have to reboot it. My friends have lap tops and they dont have this problem at all...I was curious is there a way to prevent this or is there something wrong with my comp. Thank you for your time!!!

Check this...

on the desktop (where all the icons are)Right click and go to Properties

Click on the screen saver tab

Near the botton there should be an 'Energy Saving' section...

Click on the settings button there

Turn system standby and power off hard disks to never...

Hopefully that should do it

Can you say "Windows"? I thought you could. http://discussanything.com/Ubb/biggrin.gif

Some computers aren't able to use Energy Saving capabilities properly...

Yeah, like every computer I have ever had that ran Windows 9x. You get used to it after awhile. Just like you do with all the other little quirks Windows has, like the sound and video glitches, crashes, etc.

This girl I know asked me how to make Windows quit crashing, and I told her "Turn off your computer."

Really? We've never had problems with Windows here or a similar problem with the Windows machines at my husband's work (we run 5 computers on win 98, 2k, and 2k server, and the network at his work is on Win NT I believe)

The problem seems to plague some laptops and older machines. It has to do with hard drives that don't get the command to spin back up right.

It really isn't all that bad... Just bad enough to make the occaissional joke about it. Actually, if it were not for Windows, the Internet would not be what it is today.

Uh, Ax Slinger,

Are you a logger. What's the North Coast.

Me? A logger? That's funny... Read my sig. http://discussanything.com/Ubb/biggrin.gif

The North Coast is usually considered to be Mendocino, Humboldt, and\or Del Norte counties, in northern California. At least by Californians anyway, Oregon and Washington folks probably think otherwise... Whatever the case, if the Fremont you live in is Fremont, California, I live about 300 miles north of you just outside of Eureka. I used to live in Fremont back in the early 90's.

Yes, I know where spend a C note is and Eureka for that matter. I was raised near that area. I'm a northen Californian since day one. Don't want to ruin the thread but are you attending Humboldt CU.

Spend a C note? Is that what you call Mendocino? Now that is funny!

I'm not too worried about ruining the thread. I think AngelGirl already fixed her laptop problem anyway. Besides, the board is called "Discuss anything", so now we're discussing California.

So no, I don't go to Humboldt State. I did go to College of the Redwoods back in the early 1980's though. I also went to Chabot in Hayward for awhile in the early 1990's. Now I'm just an old Retired Hippie Guitar Player. http://discussanything.com/Ubb/biggrin.gif

But I can see how you might have thought I was a logger, since I don't have my usual guitar pic next to my nickname.

Ax Slinger... From an area known for logging... Makes sense to me now that I think about it. But my nickname comes from an old guitar player's joke. Guitarists refer to guitars as "Axes", and I've been slinging one over my shoulder since I was 4. I used to always use my real name for these message boards, but I've started to get more paranoid in my old age. Everybody always used to call me Ax Slinger so I started using it for these boards...

Is that all you have to say? Or do you prefer to let your guitar do the talking? http://discussanything.com/Ubb/biggrin.gif

Some may shred, some may groove, some may jam. I just like...making music. Yeah.
